Venetians have been celebrating Carnevale

since at least the 15th century. In those

days private clubs organised masked balls,

and popular entertainment included such

gentle fun as bull-baiting and firing live dogs

from cannons. By the 18th century Venice

was in the grip of hedonism , and the

licentious goings-on of Carnevale lasted two

months.

masked locals were banned from throwing

eggs out of windows. It later became a time

of mass celebration, with masquerades in

the palazzi l ining the Grand Canal and

bullfights and cart-racing in the streets.

abandoned when Mussolini banned the

wearing of masks in public. The Carnevale

was reintroduced in 1979, prompting some

to argue that it is purely a commercial

phenomenon; prices soar, the place is

packed and the many mask shops do a

roaring business made the Carnevale

became world’s finest festivals.

These events are equally participated by

both the locals and the tourists. Participants

of the Venice Carnevale will wear mask with

elegant and matching costume to disguise

themselves. The wearing of masks erases

the gap between people.

During the Carnevale people from all class,

sex and race mingle together to celebrate.

It was basically for this reason the mask is

included in the Carnevale. The Venetian

masks became a part of the Carnevale many

centuries ago. With the social difference

being prevalent during those days masks

were a perfect way to participate in the

Carnevale.

Duration of the Events:

18 Day from Saturday January, 26 2013 to Tuesday February, 12 2013

Ticket requirement:

You can easily obtain a ticket for one of the smaller events once you arrive in Venice but the

larger balls sell out quite quickly. Liaisons Abroad (020 7376 4020; www.liaisonsabroad.com)

can arrange tickets and gondola or water taxis if required. Alternatively, contact the Venice

committee that deals with all events for which payment is required (0039 041 717065;

www.meetingeurope.com) or the Venice tourist office (529 8711; www.turismovenezia.com),

which will have final details of public events and concerts towards the end of month.

Plan ahead and book hotels well in advance for Carnevale season. Check these Top

Rated Venice Hotels or Venice Bed and Breakfast. Hotels often charge high season prices

during Carnevale.

Carnevale is a laid back affair in Venice, not very rowdy even when the city is packed.

There’s lots of awesome public entertainment, especially starting in early evening.

People wearing elaborate costumes and masks hang out all over town so there are lots

to see just by walking around. For the best Carnevale experience, wear a costume or at

least a mask yourself. It’s easy to buy an inexpensive mask once you’re in Venice.

Although the main events are centered on Piazza

San Marco, Carnevale events are held in every

Sestiere so be sure to visit other areas of Venice. A

fir ew or ks sh ow h e ld i n P ia zz a S an M ar c o

culminates Carnevale and the fireworks can be

seen from almost anywhere in Venice.

Most high-end hotels hold masked balls, smaller

and more private than the public events. They’ll

also engage someone to make your costume.

Attendance at a ball, including a costume, can run

about 500 euro. More formal Carnevale events,

private parties, and masquerade balls require

reservations ahead of time.

Betsy Malloy, California Travel, went to Venice

Carnevale in 2009. She recommends staying in

Venice from the Wednesday through the Saturday

prior to Carnevale. There are lots going on before

the actual Carnevale date, including plenty of

entertainment and costumed characters. You’ll

avoid the biggest crowds but still enjoy the

Carnevale atmosphere.

Carnevale dates change every year, corresponding

with Shrove Tuesday forty days before Easter.

Carnevale is a winter event, so weather may be

cold or rainy.

Carnival of Nice, France

The Nice Carnival is the most popular

winter event on the French Riviera. The city

comes alive during a fortnight of festivities,

with carnival processions, flower parades,

prestige soirées, concerts and fireworks,

attracting over a million spectators.

Music flows from every street corner and

huge papier mâché characters with giant

heads parade through the city - some on

floats, some dancing with the crowds on the

streets.

Spectacular processions, day and night, take

place along the seafront Promenade des

Anglais and include the Bataille des Fleurs, a

huge parade of flowers accompanied by

marching bands and twirling majorettes.

Fastnacht, Germany

In German, carnival is called as "Fastnacht".

The second day of the three days carnival is

called as Rose Monday and there is a big

parade through the main street. On this

day, the citizens of Koln disguise and go out

to see the parade. It is very enjoyable. The

house ladies, who are supposed to be

graceful on ordinary days, make up their

lips with red lipsticks to draw big mouths

and provoke the men in the parade. Other

citizens jump into the parade and sing songs

together, or young couples kiss each other.

Children blow soap bubbles. It is like a

fantasy world.

Louis iana State of New Or leans was

prospered from producing of cotton and

sugar cane in early 19 century. There were

many r ich p lantation owners. At the

carnival season, those owners rode on

floats and threw the money and jewels to

the poor people of the town. Today,

hundreds of crews ride on the several

dozen of floats and parade the streets. The

crews throw toy jewels to the spectators.

There is a king and a queen on each floats

and brings their 50 crews. As the carnival

days are passing, people, cars, and even

dogs wear toy jewels more and more.

The carnival of Rio de Janeiro

Brazil of South America is now mid-summer

season. Strong summer sun light is shining.

The carnival is the most exciting moment

for the Brazilians. They work and save

money for a year in order to participate to

the carnival. Most people in Rio de Janeiro

go to Samba schools. There are hundreds of

Samba schools in the town.

The carnival is the competition of Samba

schools. Victory or Defeat is depended on

the originality and creativity of the theme of

the float, music, costumes and dances. A

school of parade consists of 5000 dancers.

They dance and parade on 800m road for

90 minutes with loud Samba music. On the

gorgeous huge float, hundreds of dancers

are keeping dancing. As there are 10 to 12

schools participate on each night, the last

parade finishes in the dawn. All music songs

are Samba, the heart of Brazil. The phrase

of "Oh, Brazil" is repeated by thousand

times. The moment of unification by

patriotism.
