Page 5: Carnegie Mellon University Summit Brochure

Carnegie Mellon (www.cmu.edu) is a private, internationally ranked research university with programs in areas ranging from science, technol-ogy and business, to public policy, the humanities and the arts. More than 11,000 students in the university’s seven schools and colleges benefit from a small student-to-faculty ratio and an education characterized by its focus on creating and implementing solutions to real problems, inter-disciplinary collaboration and innovation. A global university, Carnegie Mellon’s main campus in the United States is in Pittsburgh, PA. It has campuses in California’s Silicon Valley and Qatar, and programs in Asia, Australia, Europe and Mexico. The university has crossed the $1 billion fundraising campaign milestone, titled “Inspire Innovation: The Campaign for Carnegie Mellon University,” which aims to build its endowment, sup-port faculty, students and innovative research, and enhance the physical campus with equipment and facility improvements.

Pittsburgh is the second largest city of Pennsylvania and the county seat of Allegheny County. Nationally, it is the 22nd largest urban area in the United States. Pittsburgh is known colloquially as “the City of Bridges” and “the Steel City” for its many bridges and former steel manufacturing base.

While the city is historically known for its steel industry, today its economy is largely based on healthcare, education, technology, robotics, and financial services. The downturn of the steel industry left no steel mills within the City of Pittsburgh and only two remaining mills in the county. By contrast, the region supports 1,600 technology companies, ranging from a Google campus to small startups.

Major publications often note Pittsburgh’s high livability with the city claim-ing the top overall spot in the United States in recent “most livable city” lists by Places Rated Almanac (2007), Forbes (2010), and The Economist (2011). In 2012, National Geographic named Pittsburgh one of the best worldwide travel destinations.

Innovation is the only way upon which China will be able to persist and maintain a long-term strong economy and strong economic growth in the future. China needs to transform its economy from one with labor intensive manufacturing and assembly to an economy where innovation and high value products take root from within. Entrepreneurship is one of the key point to facilitate the transforma-tion. What is the research and commercialization infrastructure and ecosystems in US and China? How to build collaborative, virtual teams across geographical and cultural boundaries? How’s current capital markets – China to US and US to China?
