sometimes a simple repair can lead to a full remodeling job, as in the case of my own guest bathroom, which doubles as a steam shower, and was the most popular bathroom in the house for

family members and our guests.

So when it came time to fix a small leak in the shower, I decided it was time to Invest in My Nest, with full steam ahead to give this bathroom the makeover it deserved!

Designer Wendy Prather of Lemire Design was the first to take a look at the room. “We knew that the plain vanity, dated faux painting, and little shower door had to go. In my mind, I wanted to go with a darker, sassy look instead of the neutrals. Wendy agreed and the transformation was started.”

The room was gutted and the opening to the shower was widened by 12 inches, which gave the shower a surprisingly larger look. It also exposed the back wall of the shower, suddenly making it a focal point and in need of something

dramatic. We chose a tile pattern (Architectual Brick and Tile) made up of shimmery bronzes with random highlights of silver. It certainly made a statement and we decided on a glass door to show off the new wall of tile.

A strip of the same tile wrapped around the rest of the bathroom, topped with a unique black-bronze chair rail, custom flooring and ceramic tile all in the same hues (The Tile shop) really blended together filling out the rest of the bathroom.

Every project of redecorating can have it challenges and ours came in the tile selection, which came from three different stores with three different grouts. It took some work to make it all blend.

The plain white vanity was replaced with a sleek black cabinet (Zinn Kitchens, Inc.) topped with an exotic stone called Black Thunder (Stone Spectrum). A partially recessed Kohler glass bowl and a Pfister waterfall faucet (Fergusons) brought it all together.

The strip lighting and mirror were replaced with a framed backlit mirror (Glassworks by Design) and two chocolate colored crystal pendants that I found on the internet. A bronze shimmery faux finish (Faux painting by Lisa)was added to the walls and a silvery sparkle to the ceiling completing this steamy oasis ready for all to enjoy.

I did add a warming system to the floor so we wouldn’t get cold feet when it comes time to do the next remodeling project!

Here is a really good appetizer which is great for both casual

and elegant occassions. [ ]


INgredIeNTS:

1 baguette, cut into thin slices• Olive oil• 1/4 cup butter (1 stick)• 2 cloves of garlic, minced• 1 pound mixed mushrooms (button, portabella) cleaned, stems • removed and chopped fine1/4 cup of dry white wine (Sauvigon Blanc & Chardonnay work well)• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste• Fresh Mozzarella Cheese cut into 24 thin slices to fit baguette• 1/4 cup freshly shredded Parmesan (not grated)• Chopped fresh parsley•

dIreCTIoNS:

Pre-heat oven to 350°. Arrange baguette slices on a baking sheet. Lightly drizzle with olive oil. Bake bread for 8-10 minutes until lightly toasted. Remove from oven and set aside. Leave oven turned on.

Melt butter in a large saute pan over medium-low heat. Add garlic and saute for a minute until fragrant. Add chopped mushrooms. Increase heat to medium and saute mushrooms in butter for 5-8 minutes, until starting to reduce down and get brown.

Add white wine and increase heat to high. Cook, stirring often, until wine has reduced and most of the liquid has evaporated, approximately 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add fresh chopped parsley and mix together. Remove from heat.

Arrange mozzarella slices on top of each baguette slice. Top each with approximately 1 tablespoon of mushroom mixture. Don’t be afraid to use your fingers to ensure mushrooms mixture is evenly spread over bread slice. Top with a light sprinkle of shredded Parmesan.

Once all bread slices are topped with cheese and mushroom, bake in oven for 8-10 minutes until cheese has melted and edges of bread start to brown. Remove pan from oven, place crostinis on a serving plate, lightly sprinkle additional chopped parsley over everything and serve immediately.

Have you ever had to change a diaper at three o’clock in the morning? You have one eye open, your baby is fussing, and you’re trying to snap the bottom of the kid’s pajamas. Frustrated and cursing under your breath you think; there has to be a better way! Enter Hello World Clothing Company.

Hello World® is the brain child of a loving mom, Cynthia Wise, who wanted an easier way for savvy parents to connect with the needs of their children and with their own world. “We realize that busy parents and children have one important common thread: each other. When your child shines the eyes of innocence in your direction, everything else is insignificant,” said Wise.

The first product was the SmartZip Sleeper. It comes in blue “Blue Me Away” and pink “Made Me Blush.” Both have brown accents. I get letters all the time from parents wanting bigger sizes and more colors. Our hope is to run a yearly holiday campaign to provide one sleeper to the foundation for every one sold on our site,” Wise stated.

Hello World made their first sale in June of 2009, they continue to grow and learn new things daily. Thoughts on being a business owner, what does it take? “Money! It takes money to start and keep going, but sales take time to catch up to that initial investment. I believe if you do your research, continuously ask questions and give it your all, you will succeed. In the end the business may fail, but at least I took a risk, had fun and learned a lot about myself. I also have more enthusiasm and less trepidation about launching new ideas.”

While first dates should always occur in a public place (no exceptions), I wouldn’t recommend a fondue restaurant, particularly not one with intimate booths and mood lighting. And definitely not with someone who is already married — to his BlackBerry®.

Regrettably, as you may have surmised, I found myself in just such a situation. I probably should have said, “Bob, we don’t know each other well enough yet,” because, let’s face it, ambience like that is lost on a first date. A lady doesn’t really want to go to a romantic restaurant with a near stranger, and the chances of me ending up canoodling with said near stranger in a dark corner of said romantic restaurant our first time out are slim to none.

Yes, I should have said, “Perhaps a coffee house might be a better choice.” And I would have. I absolutely would have had Bob not called at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning to set the time and place. It was difficult enough to feel around for a scrap piece of paper and a pen and scribble the information down with my eyes closed. An intelligent sentence was not an option. So fast-forward 12 hours, and Bob and I were

escorted to a booth in an interior room of one very romantic and completely inappropriate fondue restaurant.

Now I’ve had fondue a number of times in my life, and I think it’s a great meal for socializing with friends or lingering with someone you know and love — a relaxing cook-as-you-chat evening — the operative word being RELAXING. Unless, of course, you find yourself on a first date with Bob.

We ordered a steak and vegetable fondue combination and, as our server checked the temperature of the pot of broth sitting over the heating unit in the center of our table, she ran through her typical spiel. “It takes about 3 minutes for the meat to cook all the way through. The vegetables will take less time depending on how crisp you like them. Enjoy!”

I’ve heard of a 3-minute egg, but about two seconds after our server walked away, I was introduced to OCD Bob, or as I’ve come to refer to him, “the 3-minute man.” Because he whipped out his BlackBerry, set its timer to go off at 3-minute intervals and quickly skewered his first piece of meat with his fondue fork and plunged it into the boiling broth, his eyes darting from the phone to the fondue pot and back again.

I was a little nonplussed. Being in my early 40s, I remember what it was like to go on a date without an electronic third wheel. And while I have no desire to relive my 20s, I wouldn’t mind — I dare say I even look forward to — the occasional evening sans cell phones.

Then I thought maybe he couldn’t see well enough in the dim lighting to tell if his meat was done, so I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, collected my thoughts, took a slow, deep breath, and dove into the obligatory first-date chitchat.

“I used to eat fondue a lot when I was a kid,” I said. “Of course, we cooked our meat in oil back then before everyone was so conscious of cholesterol and fat intake. And I have to say…”

DING!

Quick like a rabbit Bob extracted his first piece of meat with one hand while dropping piece number two in with the other.

“You want to use my timer?” he asked, his eyes adding me to their rotation, racing from fondue pot, to me, to the BlackBerry screen glowing eerily in the dark as it ticked off the seconds.

His rapid eye movement was starting to make me dizzy, so


I looked down at my plate. “No thanks,” I said. “I think I’ll just wing it.”

I think I smiled. It might have looked more like a grimace from Bob’s side of the table. I waited for him to say something else, but he was intent on readying his next piece of steak for cooking.

I tried again. “Is this your first time eating fondue?”

DING!

Good grief. This was speed dating, What’s My Line?, and how to drive your date crazy without really trying all rolled into one.

“Yes,” he finally said. “This is quite fun.” Really?

DING!

Bob never did get the hang of fondue and discussion at the same time. And by the time he was full and able to talk, I was way past ready to go. I left the restaurant with a ringing in my ears, a nervous tick in my left eye and a steadfast rule that cell phones must remain on mute and out of sight on dates.

As for Bob, his 3 minutes were up.

When my mother was growing up, people rarely got straight “A’s.” This had nothing to do with the quality of the students or the education. Back then an “A” meant exceptional work and it was uncommon to be “exceptional” in every single category. These days, with inflated grades and an effort to not leave students behind, children are receiving higher grades than ever.

So what is a parent to do? Naturally, no one wants his or her child slipping behind the pack. It can also be difficult for a child to truly shine when the bar is lowered. Many parents look for tutoring or private lessons to give their children a cutting edge. There are many justifications for this; money spent on tutors now may be money saved by scholarships later, maybe private school is just a little too costly but you’re child’s current school is just a little too slow or maybe a parent seeks extracurricular help to keep their child on par. Whatever the reasons for the tutor, attaining one can be a confusing first step. Here is what local parents Shari Finnell and Jody Mugele went through when they realized they wanted to provide their kids with something extra.

Mugele: “Locally. I trust friends to let me know who is qualified for the job and who might be a good fit with my kids personalities. If I don’t find someone that way, I’ll look for college students who need to log hours for community service or class.”

Finnell: “Referrals! I thought about checking out some of the more formal sources for tutoring, but decided to approach friends and co-workers first for some guidance.”

How was the response and how easily did you find available tutors?

Mugele: “Quick. I knew my standards and expectations going in (maybe they were low-ish) but it helped get what I needed quickly.”

Finnell: “Fortunately, it didn’t take that long for me to get a personal recommendation for Jonathan Bernardi, who also teaches math at

a nearby community college. He was highly recommended by one of my co-workers who had used him as a tutor for one of his continuing education classes.”

What qualifications did you need in your tutor?

Mugele: “1. Someone who understands my kids are individuals and who will know how to motivate them. 2. Someone who had a specific depth of experience/knowledge about the subject.”

Finnell: “It was important to me that I found someone who would push my son without turning him off, as well as someone who had the right skills and aptitude for explaining college prep mathematics. Since I was also looking for someone who could help him with his study habits; again, to help prepare him for college, I thought it was important that it was something he could easily relate to as well as respect.”

What other qualities were factors? (Age, gender, availability, etc.)

Mugele: “Money matters. Location matters. Availability

matters. I’m big on allowing my kids to be as independent as possible, so one consideration for me was if my kids could walk to their tutor’s studio or home.”

Finnell: “I preferred a male so that my son could relate better. Personality was huge … the right “match” from that perspective was a huge consideration. Age wasn’t a huge factor … I wanted someone with experience, but yet who is able to get across to someone my son’s age. Also, I wasn’t necessarily looking for a formal schedule (i.e. meet once a week on Mondays) but rather someone who was willing to work with us as needed.”

Did the relationship with your tutor turn out well or did you have to look other places?

Mugele: “Worked out very well! My kids have missed tutors when they’ve outgrown them and they still keep in touch.”

Finnell: “The relationship turned out really well … it clicked from the beginning, which is saying a lot because my son wasn’t looking forward to working with a mentor. Jonathan took the time to draw up on his own personal experiences in high school to break the ice with my son, which was a huge factor in setting

the tone. He also talked about favorite books that they had in common. Because of the tutor’s passion for math and other subjects my son shares an interest in, the tutoring relationship has proven to be even more successful than originally planned.”

Did your child’s work improve?

Mugele: “Yes!”

Finnell: “Yes. Jonathan has helped my son get over some ‘humps’ in his math classes, as well as encouraged him to improve his study habits in other areas.”

Tutors and instructors can be found throughout the city and suburbs. Start your search by asking friends for referrals but also make a point to ask current instructors and schools. They will have listings of tutors readily available.

give an 8-year old a golf club and a little white ball, and you never know what might happen when she tees it up. In Brittany Kelly’s case, that golf club felt like it belonged in her hands,

but before it became an extension of who she is, she juggled multiple balls – from soccer to basketball. But, her relationship with golf has had staying power and is now offering opportunities she could only dream about. As a member of the Symetra Tour player marketing team, she has been chosen as spokeswoman for the My Marsh Golf Classic, a $100,000 purse world-class women’s golf event, scheduled to be held at The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers May 28-June 3.

“What an honor to be asked to publicize this local tournament that will take place in my hometown on the same course I played in high school, where I qualified for my first U.S. Girls Junior, and became runner up at the MAC championships while playing for Ball State,” said Brittany. “I couldn’t be more excited to play in my own backyard.”

Sponsored by Marsh Supermarkets, Hamilton County Sports Authority and the Ladies Professional Golf Association, the Road to the LPGA will stop in Hamilton County for the first time in tour history. According to Joe Kelley, chairman, CEO and president of Marsh, “We are delighted to help bring the rising stars of the LPGA to Central Indiana as a way to raise valuable funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and further enable this great organization to achieve its goals.” A full field of 144 golfers from around the world will compete to develop their careers.

A born competitor, Kelly excelled in athletics as a youngster. Upon entering high school, she was forced to toss around her options realizing she had to choose just one sport when freshman soccer conflicted with tryouts for the Hamilton Southeastern girl’s golf team. “I’m very

competitive and it was a big decision between soccer and golf. Both sports were in the same season,” said Brittany. “It was a big turning point for me. I was not going to be able to play all the sports I wanted to play. I decided golf was going to take me further and I really wanted to play in college at a Division 1 school with a full ride scholarship, so I had to make some tough decisions.” Ultimately, she was able to play goalie on her high school soccer team her senior year.

Brittany’s grandparents on her mother’s side introduced her to the game of golf. “My sister and I used to ride on the cart and keep score.” Ashley, who is 4 years older, chose not to pursue a career in golf but supports her baby sister. “My dad never played golf until he met my mom and now he’s my caddie whenever it fits into his schedule.”

It all started with Hamilton County’s 4-hole junior tournaments. Occasional wins as a junior golfer kicked in her drive to tee it up and keep the ball in play. “The first four-hole tournament I won was at Forest Park in

Noblesville,” said Brittany. “I thought it was so cool to get a trophy.” And she learned as she grew into the game, it’s not just cool to get a trophy, but it’s seriously hard work to keep that cool going.

Upon graduating from Hamilton Southeastern High School, she realized she needed to keep in the swing of things, participating in 18-hole events almost daily, all summer long prior to her participation on the Ball State women’s golf team, “Sometimes it’s so hard when you are not playing well and you still have to show up for work day after day.”

“During spring break, I’d go to Florida and practice golf.

It was like a kick off to the season. In fact, almost every family vacation was a golf vacation.” But, even though Brittany worked hard at her game and put in numerous hours and effort to reach the top, she was humbled upon arriving at Qualifying School. “It’s really hard when you have had a successful college career and everyone you are competing with is as good or better than you. I learned through my rookie season that I have some things to work on, needed to make changes and focus on what was going to be my one up on everyone else,” said Brittany. “I finally got new clubs and was professionally fitted.”

Brittany did qualify for the Symetra Tour during Q-school and she gives her caddie high scores for her winning performance. “Dad started caddying for me when I played in the Indiana Women’s Golf events,” said Brittany. “He’s great at helping with yardage, wind and encouraging me think about things I’m not thinking about at the moment, like play the slope, if I’m putting.”

But, on the green her Dad, Ken Kelly, a teacher at Carmel Middle School, normally hangs back and does not read putts. “You know it’s just like coaching. When players are playing well it’s fun and everybody is happy. When Brittany is on her game my job is easy and life is good,” said Kelly, who has coached the Carmel High School girl’s golf team for nearly two decades. “As her caddy, I never really feel nervous until her game gets challenging. I take my job seriously and focus on giving her the facts she needs to make the shot. I try to keep her calm and positive when shots aren’t coming.”

Brittany decided to give up her amateur status and turn pro after graduating from Ball State and she has not experienced much glamour. “It’s lonely on the road, I miss my family and there’s not much money at this stage. I have to make my own schedule, be disciplined to practice and

workout and find places to stay when I’m in an unfamiliar town for a tournament. But I love it.”

Now in her second year on the Symetra Tour, Brittany has the chance to be a big shot in her hometown with her Daddy Caddy in tow. Both are no longer rookies and have learned some valuable lessons marching along the fairway, “Last summer, I let a ‘just don’t leave it short’ comment slip on the putting green after we lined up her putt. She ran it by two feet and I got a glare that could kill. Thankfully, she made the putt coming back,” recalled Kelly. “A few weeks later Brittany presented me with CD’s titled “Who’s Your Caddy?” The best advice I got from the stories told were; #1 show-up, #2 keep up and #3 shut-up.

Kelly reflects on how rewarding it has been watching his youngest daughter progress through a life in golf. “From nearly birth she’s been saying ‘Watch me Daddy, watch this’ and I have been watching her. I will keep watching her golf and compete for as long as she is in the game.”

My goal is to place in the top ten in the My Marsh Golf Classic. Both me and my Dad know the Hawthorns course well,” said Brittany. “Dad has helped me win tournaments before. He can help me win this tournament!”

In the fall of 2007, local certified arborist Joshua Taflinger had no idea that his future would involve pesky green bugs. In fact, no one would have predicted that this successful owner of a tree trimming and removal company would sell his business and focus all his time and resources plotting the demise of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).

“My friends thought I was crazy,” says Taflinger. “But the more I learned about this epidemic, the more passionate I

became about saving Indiana’s trees and making a positive impact on our communities.” Taflinger now owns and operates IndyAsh, a small family-operated company that provides EAB treatments for private and commercial properties as well as entire neighborhoods.

In 2004, when the invasive and devastating EABs were first confirmed in Indiana, Taflinger had never heard of them. But after a conversation with a colleague a couple of years later, it became his mission to learn more. As additional cases were

identified over the next year, local media increasingly reported on the infestations in the area. But as news cycles shifted, the coverage began to dwindle, and the majority of residents assumed that the problem had been taken care of.

“People don’t realize that if they have an Ash tree and do not have a treatment plan in place, quite simply, their trees will most likely be dead within two years,” says Taflinger. “And they won’t see warning signs until it’s too late.”

Taflinger regularly appears at neighborhood association meetings, community fairs and public events where he assists in educating the public about the seriousness of EABs and the future of Indiana’s Ash trees. It has become his passion.

It’s the passion of state agencies as well, as Purdue Extension has been recording the rapid progress of EABs, and has issued warnings and recommendations for treatments. It is estimated that over 60 million Ash trees have been killed in the Midwest since 2006, while the EAB
