The facilitation of continued advances in cancer care,
prevention, treatment and control require an in-depth
knowledge of the mechanism of genesis of cancer at the
cellular/molecular level. Significant progress has been made in
cancer research in the past decade. An international
conference to disseminate information on the major
breakthroughs to the general public and create an opportunity
for the researchers to critically analyze the progress and
challenges is therefore, very timely and important.
Reliance Life Sciences in association with the Carcinogenesis
Foundation, USA is proud to present an International
Symposium on “Frontiers in Carcinogenesis and Cancer
Prevention: Scientific Endeavors and Public Health Initiatives”.
The international conference will bring together clinicians and
research scientists in the field of cancer to discuss and
deliberate on the progress made in the field during the first
decade of the new millennium. Topics for discussions include
identification of novel molecular targets for developing
therapeutic and prevention strategies.
Cancer being a major public health issue in the developing
world, there will be focused sessions on spreading cancer
prevention education. The conference will have oral
presentations, panel discussions and poster presentations to
share the research findings from the seasoned researchers and
clinicians, as well as young budding scientists and clinicians.
The international conference is expected to catalyze scientific
discussions that could initiate paradigm shifts in approaches to
cancer research, cancer patients and oncologists.

Dr. Kovvali has published several research papers on DNA repair mechanisms to his credit. Dr.
Kovvali's current interests are in cancer prevention, education and public health related issues.
Currently, Dr. Gopala Kovvali works in private sector and is an Adjunct Professor in the
Department of Genetics, Rutgers University, NJ, and Executive Editor of the Journal of
Carcinogenesis, and was the founding Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Kovvali is a founder president of
Carcinogenesis Foundation, a non-profit organization that strives to understand the genesis of
cancers in order to prevent cancer incidence.
Dr. Saranath, Research Director, heads the Molecular Medicine Group of Reliance Life
Sciences. She is a Fellow of Maharashtra Academy of Sciences, India, Founder Member and
Member at Large of Council of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, and was the Past
President of the Indian Association of Cancer Research. Dr. Saranath has done pioneering
work towards understanding the molecular basis of Oral Cancer. Her current research in
translational medicine aims to develop 'Predictive / Preventive Molecular Biomarkers' in human
cancers, genetic diseases and infectious diseases, with emphasis on 'Diagnosis for All' in the
high end Molecular Diagnostics. She has authored over 70 publications.
Dr. Maudgal is PhD from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. After extensive
experience in the field of high temperature resistant polymers, in various Corporate
Organisations, Dr. Maudgal joined Cancer Patients Aids Association in 1999. Since then she
has been involve in cancer awareness program, running an interactive website for cancer
patients and family members, organising and overseeing volunteer counselling and training
programs for patient support groups, and supports cancer related research activities.
Professor Franco's research has focussed on molecular epidemiology and prevention of
cervical cancer, upper aero-digestive tract cancers and childhood tumours, and the
development of statistical methods for evaluating efficacy of cancer screening strategies and
assessing the impact of measurement error in epidemiology. He has published over 290
papers on these topics and edited two books on cancer epidemiology and prevention.
Dr. Potter's research interests include studies on the roles of calpain proteases in cancer, the
role of heat shock protein 90 (hsp 90) in breast cancer, and translational breast cancer clinical
trials. He is also studying regulation of calpain proteases and the role in cytoskeletal
remodeling; the role of cytochrome P450 in breast cancer progression.
Dr. Reid's research interests focus on early detection and chemoprevention of lung and head
and neck cancers, and the evaluation of genetic/epigenetic biomarkers of early lesions in high
risk populations. She has authored more than 50 publications.

Dr. Trosko pioneered the studies on the mechanisms of tumor promotion, leading to the
discovery of tumor promoter and oncogene inhibition of gap junctional intercellular
communication (GJIC). More recently, his team pioneered the isolation of human adult stem
cells, identified a genetic marker for normal adult stem cells and showed that “cancer stem
cells” could be derived from these normal adult stem cells. Today, his research is a systems
integration of how environmental and dietary factors, acting during pre and post-natal
development can modify frequency of cancer, supporting the “Barker hypothesis”.
Dr. Victoria M Villaflor is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine in the
Section of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Chicago, Chicago. Dr. Villaflor
currently focuses her research efforts on clinical care of patients with head and neck,
esophageal and lung cancers. Her major research interests include combined
chemoradiotherapy as well as targeted therapies to improve clinical outcomes in patients with
head and neck, esophageal and lung carcinoma.

Dr. Vishwanatha's research is in the area of cancer cell proliferation. He has published on
molecular markers that exhibit differences between prostate cancer incidence in patients from
USA and India. His laboratory is also investigating molecular markers for malignant
progression of oral dysplasia, and utilization of nanotechnology to deliver drugs and
biomolecules for therapy.
Prof. Werner is a leader in the field of the insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and, in particular, the
role and regulation of the IGF receptor. A prolific researcher, he is the author of over 135 papers.
Dr. Yendamuri is a thoracic surgeon at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York. His
lab focuses on translating the ability of microRNA expression profiles in the early detection
and prognostication of lung cancer. Dr.Yendamuri's clinical interests include minimally
invasive lung surgery, TEMLA (transcervical extended mediastinal lymphadenectomy) and
airway surgery. He has authored several manuscripts and book chapters in the clinical
arena as well as in lung cancer genetics.
Dr. Paul W. Brandt-Rauf is currently the Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of
Illinois at Chicago, and holds several prestigious appointments as Professor of Environmental
and Occupational Health Sciences in the School of Public Health, Professor of Medicine in the
College of Medicine. Dr. Brandt-Rauf's major research interests include environmental
carcinogenesis, with emphasis on the molecular biology and the molecular epidemiology of
cancer-related proteins, gene-environment interactions and the development of new
therapeutic/preventive interventions. He has authored over 220 journal articles and book
chapters.

Abstracts are invited from participants for poster/oral presentations and should outline the rationale, objectives, brief work plan and findings of the study. The text should not exceed 250 words (Font: Arial; Size: 11 with single space). Abstracts must be submitted by January 05, 2010. A soft copy in MS Word format should be mailed to [email protected] with the subject line mentioning the word 'Abstract'. The best ten abstracts will be selected for oral presentations and others will be given poster presentations. Citations will be given to best oral/poster presentations and two of the best oral and poster presentations will receive awards.
The climate in Mumbai throughout the year is temperate from being hot and humid insummer to being pleasant in winter. Pleasant day highs of 27°C and cool nights of around 15°C can be expected in February.
English, the language of the Symposium, is a widely used and understood language amongst the urban population in most cities of India.
