Committee have been busy finalizing our Timetable for next year to support the introduction of “Universal access” where all children will have 15 hours of kindergarten each week in the year before they start school. A sub committee made up of Laura, Amy and teachers Jane and Jacinda worked together on this. It proved to be a very challenging project, as we had to consider our 3 year old program that we value very much and were certain that we didn’t want to jeopardize this. The outcome has been pleasing and has ensured we actually increased our 3 year old program, where both groups come two sessions a week for 3 hours per session. We have kept the four year old groups all having two long days each, with the rotational timetable. The issues were, that we firstly, didn’t want to lose our 3 year old program, secondly had to meet the 15 hours per week for all 4 year olds or we risked not getting the full government funding and we only had one room to use!!! We researched long and hard as to what other kindergartens were doing and some were having Saturday morning sessions, some sessions starting at 8am and some session finishing at 5pm, these were all times and days we didn’t want to have in our program. So if we don’t mind saying so ourselves-job well done!!! The staff have been very busy providing the children with a stimulating environment with the room is looking great, having changed the lay out for term 3 and some excitement around the Olympics with the Flags in the room –fun times ahead!! Our staff have continued working very hard on “The National Quality Framework” which has required lots of extra time and effort for our entire team of staff-Thank you!! A big thank you to Laura Zavros for all her efforts for the Kinder Open day, only thing we forgot to arrange was no rain!!! Feedback has been great and having our staff there on a Saturday shows their dedication and was lovely for families to be able to meet the teachers and our kinder families-thank you! Remember if your gorgeous children are unwell please keep them home, no fun for anyone to have sick kids at kinder!!! Karen Randall and Amy Goodale Presidents

Here we are in Term 3 Winter has well and truly set in. Committee have been busy finalizing our Timetable for next year to support the introduction of “Universal access” where all children will have 15 hours of kindergarten each week in the year before they start school. The 50th Anniversary Open Day at the Kinder on May 29 this year was a great success. The kinder grounds looked amazing thanks to our maintenance team that weekend. Inside was filled with brightly coloured balloons and fantastic displays of the children’s artwork. Many new families came through to meet the teachers and families currently at the kinder – each one commented on the lovely ‘vibe’ the kinder has. We even had a visit from a woman whose sons attended the kinder over 20 years ago! Heartfelt thanks go to all the wonderful parents who whipped up delights for the amazing morning tea spread. A big thank you also to those wonderful people who gave their time on the Saturday to help blow up balloons, greet visitors, chat about the kinder and serve the morning tea. A special mention goes to Fiona Vlahos (Alex in Blue Group) for strapping on the back-pack vacuum cleaner after we realised the cleaners hadn’t been on Friday night! Jenni Armstrong (Addi in Red Group) worked her magic for 4 straight hours face-painting. Totally amazing! Thanks also to Isabella Bomford (Charlotte in Green Group) for organising and operating the fairy floss machine like a pro!We are most grateful to our dedicated teaching staff who all gave time on their Saturday morning to attend the Open Day. This was an invaluable resource to the many new families who came along. We also appreciate greatly the time taken to set up the activities that were available for kids on the day. The kinder acknowledges the kind support of Marshall White Real Estate, Jellis Craig Real Estate and Zimt Bakery. The morning was celebrated with a huge anniversary cake cut by Karen Randall (President, Florence in Yellow Group) who also attended the kinder herself at a student! We look forward to another 50 wonderful years of the Canterbury and District Kindergarten!

Three Year Old Group ReportIt has been great to see both yellow and green groups return this term full of enthusiasm and chatter during their time at kindergarten. The children are enjoying gathering together at the start of each session for a brief discussion/ song or talk about the session ahead. This demonstrates just how far they have developed since the start of the year as they are now able to separate with little or no fuss from parents. We understand that parents love to have a chat and catch up with each other too which is great and indeed necessary. As educators, however, this can be extremely disruptive to the session if it occurs inside the room or playground when children are engaged in the daily activities. Please sign your children in at kindergarten and catch up with each other away from the children so as they can make the most of their learning time and we can keep them actively engaged in the programme. There has been lots of talk about healthy and unhealthy foods to eat with the arrival of the Olympics and an interest in the human skeleton. Consequently there has been lots of activities to extend the children’s knowledge about these things. Making skeletons has been a very popular activity amongst both groups of children, with many completing two or three of them. The children are currently cutting out pictures of healthy foods and pasting them down onto a plate shape. This is also allowing them to develop some of their cutting skills. As always a daily reflection of each session is recorded after each session and put into the daily reflection book each kindergarten day. This is located next to the sign in/ out book for you to look at and read and the best way for you to keep updated about what the children have been learning throughout the session. Any feedback about the programme is always appreciated too! Come and speak to us at any time if you require further feedback, clarification or your child has a specific interest. The children have been singing a new song which highlights our experiences about skeleton. Very simple but catchy.

THE SKELETON SONG. ( to the tune of BINGO).I have a skeleton in my body And his name is Bones Oh!B-O-N-E-S, B-O-N-E-S, B-O-N-E-S,And Bones was his name , Oh!

The children are enjoying our new “Pet” rabbits who will be with us for the net three weeks. Please feel free to come and have a look at them after each session as they grow at a rapid rate. We will also be planning some learning experiences to extend this exciting happening.

Thank-you, Nicky and Deb

Four Year Old Group ReportTerm 3 looks to be a busy and exciting one. We will be continuing on with many of the children’s interests from term 2 such as undergoing science experiments, box construction, obstacle courses and football. With the children’s love for sport, the Olympics will be a great topic to link in some great learning experiences. We have the CERES incursion coming up which is an interactive program surrounding environmental issues and sustainability to be held on the 7th & 8th August. We will also be introducing the children to Rabbit Rearing as of week 3 and we look forward to having our own class room pets. The children have enjoyed engaging in our tinker table which is a table of old appliances where-by the children use screw drivers and scissors to get inside and see how things work.

If anyone has any old or broken electrical items that they have no use for we will happily take them off your hands. This will help to keep our tinker table interesting. There is currently a roster up for interview times with the teaching staff from Tuesday 24th July to Mid-4th term. The interviews will be available in 15 minute slots, on allocated times and days each week (due to staff being part time and also teaching during sessions). Parents will have the opportunity to book a time in advance similar to the way we have the duty roster. Jacinda, Jane, Nicky, Sheila and Lee

Cam Ewart is our 4 year old music teacher who comes in and works in small groups with the children for 30 minutes each week. Wednesday is Red and Orange group. Fridays- Blue group. He has extensive music knowledge, having worked as a musician for over half his life. He began working with children through Hee De Ho Music 6 years ago, and has now developed his own style of teaching music to children, incorporating songwriting and exploring different musical styles. He also shares his love of music by teaching guitar & singing at primary schools. He plays guitar and sings in a band, and is an award winning songwriter. This year he has introduced the children to a range of different musical instruments and types of music e.g. Piano (soft), Forte (loud) and Presto (extremely fast) to name a few. The children have particularly enjoyed creating whimsical songs with Cam, contributing their own ideas and personalities into the often hillarious songs they create.

Labelling of items at Kinder

Could everyone please check that all items being brought to kinder (lunch boxes, drink bottles, clothing etc) are clearly labelled with the name of the child currently attending? This is a great help to both teachers and parent helpers when placing snack and lunch out for the kids. Please pop in and check the Lost and Found basket in the locker room if you are missing anything!

Social ReportHope everyone has stayed well over these Winter months! My family got struck down with the flu and colds but we’re all back on track now and looking forward to some great events in the near future! Firstly, thanks to all who bought an Entertainment book! We raised over $500 for the kinder so that’s fantastic! The picture plates were successful also and raised $170 for the kinder. There has been a delay with getting the finished products back to you but the company assures me that we should be receiving them before the end of August. The Box Hill Train Miniature Steam Railway is coming up on our social calendar. You will receive an invitation to our private train afternoon in your pigeon hole and email soon. It is the weekend after Fathers Day, the 8th September at 1pm, and we hope to see as many kinder children with their Dads, Mums, siblings, grandparents, aunties, uncles and friends there as possible! October (next term) will be a busy month with our “Big Fundraising Night of Nights” and this year we have a treat for you all. It’s going to be a Spring Racing Carnival theme called the Kinder Cup!! So dust off those hats ladies and suit up gentlemen as we all enjoy a fabulous evening together. Please keep Saturday the 13th October free and you will receive a formal invitation and more information about this soon. Since it is a fundraiser for the kinder we will also be asking families if they have any items/expertise to donate in the coming weeks. Then later in October, Sunday the 28th we have been allocated to sell sausages at the Box Hill Bunnings so will be asking all Dads (and Mums and Aunties and Uncles if they want) to participate!! Will put up a roster in a few weeks with 1.5 hour spots so please get involved! It is a very successful way to fundraise for the kinder but we need your help so it would be great if we fill the allocated times quickly. That’s it for now so have a great term everyone and I look forward to seeing you on at the trains in September! Kind Regards, Isabella Bomford

Apple Muffins

1 1/2 cups Wholemeal Self Raising Flour1/2 cup rolled oats1/2 cup sultanas1 tsp cinnamon1/4 cup sugar (I do a bit less, often none if eating all fresh. Recipe originally 1/2 cup)

Mix together.

Add:1/3 cup veg oil3/4 cup milk150 gms apple sauce/puree (approximately)

Bake 180 degree for 12-15 mins in mini muffin tray. Makes about 30. Freeze really well, great for morning tea/snacks.

Banana variation - 1-2 ripe bananas instead of apple, and place a white choc chip into muffin vertically - they slip off if you sit them on top!!
