ABOUT US

African Cane & Co is an artisanal based community that produces fine hand woven cane furniture, rush matting & accessories. Set between granite hills & dry acacia scrub, where people reside in small isolated & dry villages eking out a subsistence living. Cane & rush matting are naturally sustainable products. In conjunction with the local men & women working on surround mines & using the concept of campfire (communal areas management program for indigenous resources). To maximize harvesting the vine whiles at the same time teaching people the values of sustainable resource & management. In many cases these villages are deep in the hills with poor roads with no reliable transport so that sometimes they can be effectively cut off entirely for weeks by flooded rivers.

This makes the products steeped in character with an underlying integrity born from the simplicity of the craftsmen who make them. Whilst every effort is made to ensure uniformity of specification each item is unique with its own characterful handmade features. This is what makes our products so special we pride ourselves on the uniqueness & variety – we shy away from mass market designs. Considerable time & effort is invested in evolving designs & techniques to constantly fine tune & improve products to keep the range abreast in design. Boutique artisanal furniture & accessories.

A maintenance service insures the longevity potential of the product after sales support in keeping with the entrepreneurial spirit of small businesses. Please note considerable care has been taken to design the furniture that is durable however bear in mind that it is handmade & slight imperfections & irregularities can be expected.

GUIDE TO CHOSING CANE FURNITURE

• Measurements in our catalogue are in mm. • Please read carefully & check the specifications given, consider the seating depth & height (our seat height does not include

cushions).

• Consider the feet height & aesthetics of the design. Please note that as these products are hand-woven there may be a 30 – 50mm differential.

• When choosing the furniture you require make sure that it can fit through doorways, hallways & if need be up staircases. If you need further help visualizing the furniture - tape together sheets of newspaper to match the width & depth of the furniture you are considering. Place them on the floor & walk around them. You can put dining chairs onto the newspaper to help visualize the height.

• Sofa size options. 4 size options are available.

• Sizing is based on the internal length between arms not the overall length (outside to outside). A two seater sofa is generally a 1500 & 1700 sofa; a 3 seater is 2000 & 22200mm.

• Colours - we do a variety of cane & leg colours ( See pg 33). Please view our website or see your nearest agent or alterna-tively we can send you a PDF of these options.

• Weave & Patterns - Some patterns on the items may have changed or are no longer used. If you require a specific pattern please indicate this on your order. 3 weaving options are available. See page 33 for details.

• Seating - We offer full woven bases (recommended for lodges/higher traffic areas) or webbed bases. ( CM2 50% elasticised stretch,additional jute webbing in between, a foam layer, covered with a black non woven spun bond). Webbed seating is more comfortable however after a period of 4 - 5 years, like all upholstery it may start to sag whereby you can contact your nearest agent to have them serviced, or if you have your own staple gun you can re-web them yourself.

• Feet Style & Height - Some designs there is a choice of feet height (that does not alter the overall height of the finished

product – i.e. Beryl Markham’s & Bed Bases). Please also take into account that some styles i.e. Livingstone Sofa has a low foot design and thus making sweeping under it more difficult.

• Recessing - Certain styles are naturally recessed however please specify if you are requiring glass inlay or cushions on top as this can alter the recess depth.

• Leather - There is a choice of leather brown faux or genuine Leather
