With the fairly consistent and measurable burningof a candle, a common use was to tell the time. The candle designed for this purpose might havetime measurements, usually in hours, markedalong the wax. The Song dynasty in China (9601279) used candle-clocks.By the 18th century,

candle-clocks were being made with weights setinto the sides of the candle. As the candle melted, the weights fell off and made a noise as they fellinto a bowl. A form of candle-clock was used incoal-mining until the 20th century.

In the days leading to Christmas some people burn

a candle a set amount to represent each day, asmarked on the candle. The type of candle used inthis way is called the Advent candle,[10] althoughthis term is also used to refer to a candle thatdecorates an Advent wreath.

Before the advent of electricity and in areas

without electricity, candles and oil lamps

were and are used for illumination. Until the

20th century, candles were more common innorthern Europe. In southern Europe and the

    Mediterranean, oil lamps predominated. In

the developed world today, candles are used

mainly for their aesthetic value and scent,

particularly to set a soft, warm, or romantic

ambiance, and for emergency lighting during

    electrical power failures. Scented candles

    are used in aromatherapy.

Breathe in and out slowly to the rhythm of

the candle. As the flame gets bigger ...

Breathe in. As it gets smaller ... Breathe out.

Listen to the music and allow your mind to

calm. Allow your thoughts to come and go.

Keep focusing your attention on the candle

    and your breathing.
