Shenton House is unique

Under the one roof, we incorporate the latest scientific, technological and medical developments in radiation oncology, medical oncology and exercise through a multidisciplinary approach. Western Diagnostics and Perth Radiological Clinic, as well as our own HeartCare and SleepCare facilities, are also on site.

Disease managementAlso unique to Shenton House is the active role we play in the coordination of disease management plans. We do not just treat patients with cancer. We assist with the creation and coordination of individual patient management plans.

Time is vital We investigate and present all therapeutic options. Through our multidisciplinary approach, we can often expedite the care and availability of other specialities to support the best possible outcomes for our patients. When it comes to surgery, for example, we know the right specialist surgeon for the condition and can assist with making appointments with minimal delay.

All chemotherapy chairs have their own TV screens, music and nurse call button. A private patient kitchen with tea and coffee facilities is also available.

Medical Oncology

The medical oncology consulting rooms are also located within the unit, providing patients with added reassurance.

Staffed by a small team of specialist cancer nurses, patients are cared for and educated about their condition on a one-to-one basis, offering greater continuum of care.

Paperless technology provides medical staff with immediate access to patient records and the ability to centralise treatment planning.

Our Services

The ‘Grace Unit’ is the focus point for medical oncology. This 7-chair, 3-bed chemotherapy suite is designed with patient comfort and safety in mind. Visibility is optimised across the suite enabling nursing staff to see patients from almost all angles.

Financial InformationMedicare does not cover the full cost of providing high quality radiation therapy.

There is an expectation that patients at Shenton House will contribute to the cost of their radiation treatment through a managed and affordable co-payment system.

The fee is based on the complexity and length of each personalised treatment plan and is communicated after the first consultation.

GenesisCare provides flexible payment options ensuring that all patients, irrespective of their financial situation, can access care. Medical oncology, dietitian and diagnostic services at Shenton House are, however, fully private.

Patients weighing up their service provider options should take into consideration the time it takes to obtain a public appointment, distance from home, daily public hospital carpark fees, ongoing choice of consultant, continuum of care and waiting times.

Radiation OncologyEvery patient and every cancer is unique. So is every treatment we prescribe.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, the Genesis CancerCare team develops personalised care plans using the latest radiation oncology technology and proven medical techniques to deliver the best possible outcomes.

Radiation oncology services at Shenton House include:3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (CRT)• 3D computer images of the tumour and surrounding

anatomy are used to develop complex plans to deliver highly focused radiation while sparing normal adjacent tissue.

• For breast cancer and other body sites.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) • Radiation beams are shaped to precisely fit the outline

of the tumour thereby reducing or avoiding the impact on healthy tissue.

• For prostate cancer, pelvic cancers, and some head and neck cancers.

Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)• Imaging is used to increase the accuracy and

precision of radiation to the target site and also identifies the organs at risk prior to treatment.

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)• The radiation dose is carefully shaped to tumours

minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissues – the machine rotates around the patient and treatment time is reduced.

• For multiple sites in the body. Particularly useful for prostate, neurological, and head and neck cancers.

Electron Beam Therapy (EBT)• Employs a beam of electrons that only just penetrate

under the skin.

• For skin cancers that are difficult to remove surgically, or benign conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Dupuytren’s contractures and keloid scarring.

In an Australian first, patients attending Shenton House are able to participate in an individually tailored exercise program under the supervision of qualified cancer exercise physiologists. Directed by the world renowned ECU Health and Wellness Institute, the program has been scientifically proven to reduce fatigue and treatment toxicity, improve quality of life, reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and maximise long-term health.1,2,3,4

ReferralThe patient is referred by their GP or another specialist.

Initial consultation happens rapidlyThe radiation oncologist reviews the patient’s medical condition and conducts a physical examination before discussing treatment options, side-effects and care requirements.

Simulation and planningThe radiation oncologist and radiation therapist work together to obtain information about the treatment site and determine the patient’s treatment position. This may involve a CT scan, placement of tattoo markings or the creation of a mask or other treatment aids.

Financial aspectsA member of the patient services team discusses treatment fees and Medicare reimbursement entitlements. A fee estimate is provided and payment options are discussed.

Evaluation and follow-upDuring the course of treatment, the radiation oncologist and nurses monitor each patient’s health and provide care advice. Regular evaluations by the radiation oncologist continue periodically after course completion to monitor progress.

Treatment and verificationThe treatment is administered by the radiation therapist, as directed by the radiation oncologist, using a linear accelerator according to the dosimetry plan.

Planning dosimetryThe information from simulation is used by the radiation oncologist, radiation therapist and medical physicist to construct a plan detailing how the radiation will be administered.

DietitianCancer treatment can result in a number of undesirable side effects including weight loss, poor appetite, swallowing problems, taste changes, mouth ulcers and dry mouth.

If required, dietitians are available to assist patients achieve maximum nutrition and maintain weight. This helps with energy levels and can also reduce the possibility of complications. A private fee applies.

Referrals

With a career that has taken him to Nepal and Melbourne, Raphael is one of only two specialised gynaecological radiation oncologists in Western Australia. Active across multidisciplinary teams, he also has an interest in head and neck, lung, upper gastro-intestinal, colorectal, urological and skin cancers as well as the highly technical aspects of radiotherapy practice, including high-dose rate brachytherapy and stereotactic lung and cranial therapies. With numerous publications to his name, and as a reviewer for the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology, Raphael is a keen researcher and draws inspiration from his patients’ resilience to face adversity.

Tim graduated from UWA in 2004 and spent his junior medical career at RPH before moving to Melbourne to train in medical oncology. With a focus research as a way of improving the treatment options of future cancer patients, Tim is currently completing a doctoral thesis on lung cancer. His first major work was published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology in 2014, the same year he returned home to Perth. Tim is actively involved in the Australasian Lung Cancer Trials Group (ALTG), the Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG) and the Australasian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group (AGITG). He places a strong emphasis on educating his patients and guiding them through their treatment options.

DIRECTOR OF CANCER SERVICES

After perfecting his own skills in stereotactic body irradiation and image guided radiotherapy at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital and Mount Sinai St Luke’s-Roosevelt hospitals in New York, Evan has maintained a focus on education through positions with the RANZCR and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at UWA. His particular interests include stereotactic body irradiation, upper and lower gastrointestinal tumours, lung malignancies and prostate cancer. His research on testosterone suppression for prostate cancer and recovery after treatment has resulted in several publications and poster presentations, and he is an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group (ANZUP).

Although an already well-respected internal medicine and palliative care consultant, Andrew’s passion to help people with a life threatening illness saw him expand his training into medical oncology and, in 2006, he began working as a full-time oncologist. While providing treatment across all adult solid tumours, Andrew’s key areas of interest are upper gastrointestinal and gynaecological tumours. He has published articles on pancreatic cancer, symptom control, novel therapies for ovarian cancer, and the molecular profiling of solid tumours. He regularly participates in international clinical trials and continues to be a major contributor to pancreatic, lung and ovarian cancer studies. Andrew has a good smattering of several languages and welcomes patients from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Nigel has a wealth of clinical and research experience as reflected by his professorial appointments at the University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Curtin University and the University of New South Wales. With a passion for practical research that translates into direct benefits for patients, Nigel has published over 130 peer reviewed papers, has been a reviewer for a number of international scientific cancer journals and has presented at over 100 national and international meetings. His ongoing work with ECU’s Health and Wellness Institute on the reduction of co-morbidities in cancer patients through tailored exercise programs has led to a change in the standard of care. Nigel’s main areas of interest are urological, upper gastrointestinal, lower gastrointestinal, breast, lung and palliative therapy.
