The Amsterdam Staff Band of The Salvation Army was formed in 1962 and consists of musicians from all over The Netherlands. The band members are actively involved in a local Salvation Army corps (church). Every band member is a Salvationist. Their musicianship is based on their personal belief in God. Most of the music in the repertoire contains a message based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His love for this world. The band meets every Tuesday for rehearsal and travels extensively throughout the country, visiting Salvation Army churches and centres to present concerts and lead worship. The Amsterdam Staff Band makes frequent visits abroad, including Norway, Sweden, Finland, England, Canada and the USA in its long list of countries visited. Currently led by Staff Bandmaster Olaf Ritman, the band still works to achieve the highest possible standard in its communication of the Christian message and in its music making.

Staff Bandmaster Olaf RitmanBorn into a Salvationist family, Olaf learned about music at a young age in the Salvation Army corps in his home town Schiedam. He received his musical education mainly within the ranks of the Salvation Army. Olaf was a member of the Amsterdam Staff Songsters from 1995 to 2003, serving both as a songster and from 2000 on as Deputy Songster leader. In that year he joined the Amsterdam Staff Band of which he became the Deputy Bandmaster in 2006. Four years later he was appointed Staff Bandmaster. Alongside conducting Olaf is a composer and arranger. His works include an arrangement for brass band of Darren Bartlett’s benediction ‘The Lord is gracious’ that received wide acclaim within and outside the Salvation Army. Some of his works were published by Salvationist Publishing & Supplies. Olaf works as a CIO for a learning solutions company, is married, father of two and a salvationist in the Valleistreek corps in Ede.
Major Mieke KuijpersMajor Mieke Kuijpers served the Salvation Army as an officer for over 40 years in appointments both as corps officer as well as in social work. Salvation Army music has always played an important part in the life of major Kuijpers. She conducted several bands and songster brigades in the corps she served, and was appointed the first female youth band leader in the Netherlands. After her official retirement major Kuijpers served the Salvation Army in several appointments. One of them being Executive Officer for the Amsterdam Staff Band.
