FEDERAL  POLICY  REGARDING  RETURN  OF  TITLE  IV  FUNDS

The law now specifies how the school determines the amount of the Student Financial Aid that you have earned in the event that you withdraw. The law now requires that when you withdraw during a payment period, the amount of Student Financial Aid that was earned up to that point is determined by specific formula. If you received less assistance than the amount you earned, you will be able to receive those additional funds. If you received more assistance than the amount you earned, the excess funds must be returned. The amount of assistance that you have earned is determined on a pro-‐rata basis. That is, if you completed 30% of the payment period, you earn 30% of the assistance you were originally scheduled to receive. Once you have completed more than 60% of the payment period, you earn all of your assistance. Payment Periods: 0-‐450, 451-‐900, 901-‐1200, 1201-‐1500, If you received excess funds that must be returned, the school must return a portion of the excess equal to the lesser of: Your institutional charges multiplied by the unearned percentage of your funds, or the entire amount of the excess funds. If the school is not required to return all of the excess funds, you must return the remaining amount. Any loan funds that you must return, you (or your parent for a PLUS loan) repay in accordance with the terms of the promissory note. If you are responsible for returning grant funds, you do not have to return the full amount. The law provides that you are not required to return 50% of the grand aid that you receive that is your responsibility to repay. Any amount that you do have to return is a grant overpayment, and you must make arrangements with the school or the U.S. Department of Education to return the funds. Repayment to Title IV will be made in the following order: Federal Direct Stafford Loans, Federal Direct Plus Loans, Federal Pell Grants, Student.
