Learn to Paint in the Method of the Old MastersLearn the step-by-step method used by artists such as Rembrandt, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, and others. To create their realistic paintings, the artists slowly built their paintings one layer at a time, beginning with a strong drawing and underpainting before any colors were added. Each week, we will cover a different step in the creation of a solid realistic painting from subject matter and initial drawing, to underpainting, glazes (colors), and final touches. Focus will be to create a realistic still life painting in oils. Students can work from still life, photograph, reproduction, or picture from a book. Previous experience preferred; beginners with a working knowledge of oil painting are welcome. Short supply list online; more supplies to be discussed in first class. Introduction to Micro-FictionThe blaster (or skipper or snapper) is shorter than the short story, shorter still than the short-short story (usually close to 2 printed pages). The blaster aims for a single powerful effect. Its fundamental quality is life---highly compressed, highly charged, sudden, and alarming. Grace Paley can achieve this effect in a long paragraph. Others fill a page. Not to be mistaken for a fragment or a sketch, the blaster is built on layers and thrives on nuances. Bring a sack lunch. Min. 6, max. 10.

“NATURE: Four Ways”Photographs by Ron Nuse June 7 – August 30, 2013

OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, June 7, 2013 from 7- 9 pm

NATURE: Four Ways draws from four past and present photographic series by Ron Nuse. “Falling Shadows” explores the hidden mystery of nature. At first glance, the images seem to be traditional landscapes but at second glance, they hint at another dimension of nature not usually seen. “Street Art” explores how art that is displayed in public places interacts with its environment, including urban nature. “Bamboo Pentaptych” shows bamboo images in five related panels. Lastly, “Four Directions” shows nature using the visual language of surrealism.
