Student Language Learning Strategies Handouts

Literature Selections:

Lesson Goals: Students will participate in a series of learning activities based on

Life Science standards from the regular education classroom. This will help

students be aware of various learning strategies. This will also assist in students in

a variety of language learning situations. These situations along with content

material will enable the students to use academic language in both the ESL and

regular education environment.

life cycle chart and d) completing posters of the life cycle with their groups,

students will be able to:

1) Apply reading selectively to How a Caterpillar Grows Into a Butterfly

(metacognitive strategy – selective attention, cognitive strategy –

resourcing).

2) Apply selective reading strategy to a read aloud session of Butterfly Story

(metacognitive strategy – selective attention).

3) Diagram the life cycle of a butterfly (cognitive strategy – imagery).

4) Make posters of the life cycle of a butterfly in groups previously selected by

the teacher ( socioaffective strategy – cooperation and questioning for

clarification, cognitive strategy - imagery).

5) Write about the life cycle of the butterfly using specific vocabulary words

given in a word bank (metacognitive strategy – monitoring production).

Instructional Procedures:

Set: Explain to the students that through learning strategies, they will

improve their listening and reading skills. Ask students to write down everything

they know about butterflies in their science journal. Divide class into 4 groups.

Warm – up:

1) Ask students to write in their science journals one thing they already

know about butterflies and one thing they would like to learn about

butterflies.

2) Each student may share their fact or their question with the class.

Mini-Lesson:

While reading aloud Butterfly Story, the teacher will describe and model

Language Learning Strategies to assist them with future practices.

Individual Application of Language Learning Strategies:

1) Students will read How a Caterpillar Turns Into a Butterfly and answer the

questions given on the handout.

2) With the information given so far, students will complete a personal chart of

the life cycle of the butterfly.

Team Application of Language Learning Strategies:

1) In groups, students will discuss their life cycle charts and make any

corrections as a group.

2) In groups, students will draw one stage of the life cycle as assigned by the

teacher and then write 2 sentences about that stage.

3) They will use a dictionary, encyclopedia, internet, or any of the literature

selections.

Closure: The groups will present their posters and read the sentences they wrote.

Finished posters will be put in the hallway for the rest of the school to see.
