Call for papers
Special Issue:Grids in bioinformatics and computational biology
Bioinformatics is fast emerging as an important disciplinefor academic research and industrial application. Researchand development in bioinformatics and computational biol-ogy create and develop advanced information and computa-tional techniques to manage and extract useful informationfrom the DNA/RNA/protein sequence being generated byhigh-throughput technologies (e.g., DNA microarrays, DNAsequencers). It is the comprehensive application of math-ematics (e.g., probability and graph theory), statistics, sci-ence (e.g., biochemistry), and computer science (e.g., com-puter algorithms and machine learning) to the understandingof living systems. Those techniques are extremely compu-tationally or data intensive, providing motivation for usingGrids.
Grids are an enabling technology that permit the transparentcoupling of geographically dispersed resources (machines, networks, data storage, visualization devices, and scientificinstruments) for large-scale distributed applications. Gridsprovide several important benefits for users and applicationsto share: computing and data storage, knowledge, instru-ments, etc.
This special issue of the Journal Parallel and DistributedComputing (JPDC) is seeking original unpublished researcharticles that describe recent advances in using Grids in bioin-formatics and computational biology.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to
GRIDS in
• Bio-ontology and data mining, data visualization.• DNA assembly, clustering, and mapping, molecular evo-lution and phytogeny.
doi:10.1016/j.jpdc.2005.03.001
• Gene expression andmicro-arrays, gene identification andannotation.
