Meet Milford 4-H Vice President, Maddi Johnson

Hi, my name is Maddi Johnson. I am 11 years old and I am Vice President of the Milford 4-H Club. I have been in 4-H for seven years. This year I am taking lambs and a steer to the fair. My steers name is Ghost Rider and he thinks he is a one thousand pound puppy. I also am taking the cooking, sewing, and photog-raphy projects. One of my favorite photography moments was when I got to see the wild horses out in Nevada. I took so many pretty photos of the foals. It is really sad that the horses have less space because so many homes and businesses are being built around water holes. I am really looking forward to going to 4-H Camp this summer! My goal this 4-H year is to earn my gold and platinum stars.

Lake 4-H Club all dressed up in their whites!

On Monday February 18th the Milford and Standish 4-H Clubs hosted Large Animal Skills Day at Jensen Hall. We had 33 kids and their parents that joined in our workshops. While there were no live animals at the event members were able to learn a lot about what they need to raise a market animal for our fair and how to care for them. We had some fun things too like a tool identification contest and parts identification contest. The parts ID contest was difficult because you had to complete all four species (sheep, swine, goat, beef). Tractor Supply donated five gallon buckets to each member in attendance. We would like to thank all of the parent and community volunteers that assisted us for this event by planning lessons and stations: Sally Dilts (Tool ID), Cindy Weimer (Quality Assurance), Lacy Weaver (Parts ID), Jen Ward (Injections), Nickie Dilts (Feeds & Feeding), Virginia Bartholomew, Sara Gould, Debi Savage, and Melinda Cardenas. If any parents or leaders would like a copy of the information presented at the event please contact the 4-H Office.

Contest Winners: Tool Identification 12-18 years of age: Jack Mallery - Richmond 4-H Tool Identification 9-11 years of age: Maddi Johnson - Milford 4-H Parts Identification 12-18 years of age: Jack Mallery - Richmond 4-H & Madi Ward - Milford 4-H Parts Identification 9-11 years of age: Lily Ammon - Richmond 4-H

Large Animal Skills Day is a Big Success!

Thank You Milford 4-H

Members & Parents for putting on an outstanding Large

Animal Skills Day!

On January 27, 2019 Merry Morsals and Standish 4H Baking joined forces. Heather Arter gave

the children a tour of her wonderful baking studio where she casually described different areas of work

space and the type of machinery and utensils used to create her masterpiece cupcakes, cakes and many

other goodies she has to offer. Her children hard at work so helpful to help make it all happen. Each4H

child was given 4 pre made cupcakes, frosting bags complete with brown, white and pink frosting also

modeling chocolate in the colors orange, pink, black, brown, red and white. The children all stood

respectfully with their attention on Heather’s direction excited to find out what they could possibly be

creating. First we started with a brown cow (mine looked like a bear that over ate at thanksgiving)

Heather directed the frosting first then ears, nose and eyes. I cannot express the amount of joy that

filled the room of course well make animal cupcakes its 4H. They all dived right in and to see the

different cows each and every child’s Imagination running wild was just so joyful. They did a piggy and

a chicken then got to create their own some made unicorns, puppy’s and some just created layers of

frosting so creatively (thicker than the cupcake) it really was just about the fundamentals of working

with the molding chocolate in a careful way to create with less errors. Heather’s direction was so on

point the kids were able to clearly understand and create so easily. I cannot express the appreciation

from all of us at Standish 4H and we look forward to working with Heather Arter again.

On March 9th the Standish 4-H Club will have their annual Taco Feed and the kids will put their

skills into motion and make some cupcakes using the information and techniques given by Heather so

please be on the lookout for the upcoming event.
