NEWSWATCH NADONA Opposes Nurse Substitutions CINCINNATI, OH--In its largest gathering to date, the National Associ- ation of Directors of Nursing in Long- Term Care (NADONA/LTC) drew 260 nurses here from 36 states for its 4th annual convention, June 26 to 29. At the business meeting on the last day, discussion brought back memo- ries of the NADONA convention two years ago when members vigorously debated the registered care technician (RCT), an allied health worker pro- posed by the American Medical As- sociation. In California, reported the state's NADONA President Saundra Jack, a geriatric technician in Sonoma County is being trained much along the same lines as the RCT. According to the job description, said Jack, the geri techs can change care plans and supervise staff as long as an RN is in the building. Turning from external challenges to internal rewards, Warden reported that the association has grown to nearly 1,700 members in 48 states~ Education committee chair Char- lotte Eliopoulos reported advances in the NADONA certification program: The certification exam has been given in Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC and just before the convention in Ohio. The exam is scheduled to be given in Arkansas, Montana, Minnesota, and New Jersey in 1991 and 1992. Montana will be the site of the first certification review course. A geriatric certification for LPNs is being explored with the Na- tional Gerontological Nursing Associ- ation (NGNA) and the National Licensed Practical Nurses Association (NLPNA). The 1992 convention will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, June 24-27.
