TAMMY

Dear Foursquare Family,

As we look back over these four years of being commissioned, transformed, restored and now compelled by Jesus, the passion behind the mission of the Foursquare Church is clear. We desire to see people following Christ, being changed into his image, and living out his mission.

In 2019, that passion resulted in 103,032 people making the decision to follow Jesus through Foursquare ministry in the U.S. with an added 2,971 at camps. There were 13,399 reported water baptisms and 10,228 Holy Spirit baptisms. We celebrate 26 different language groups self-identified in Foursquare churches in the U.S. as the world is at home in our neighborhoods.

There were 143 women and 187 men who received their minister credential last year, which is 85 more than the previous year. Of these 330 leaders 166 were under the age of 40. As we look to the future need this is an encouraging sign as it is almost 40 more in the same demographic than the previous year. A very exciting statistic is there were 1,925 young people who acknowledged a call to ministry at our camps in 2019. In the past we have averaged 1300-1500 making that acknowledgment.

As our districts continue their focus on leadership development, church transformation and church multiplication, there were 130 senior pastor transitions, 88 church & congregation closures, and 99 new churches and congregations registered. This brings us to a total of 1,977 churches and congregations in the U.S. We see continued growth in new models of the gospel being planted in people groups across the country.

As an example, I would like to highlight the ministry of our Foursquare Chaplains. In 2019 FCI endorsed 291 chaplains, a 20% growth rate since 2015.  These men and women serve in one or more missional congregations. They minister on military bases and are deployed with troops overseas.  Chaplains are serving in law enforcement agencies and visiting the incarcerated. They bring God’s presence to the aging, the sick and wounded, and the dying.  Many are hired by universities and businesses across the country. In 2019 Foursquare chaplains served in 331 missional locations, a 15% growth over four years, from those 4,956 people confessed their faith in Christ; 1,192 were water baptized, and 397 were baptized in the Holy Spirit.

It has been a joy to serve with the district supervisors and their teams, as well as the national church office and field teams. In Phoenix we called church planters forward to pray over them with a picture on the screen of lights placed throughout the U.S. The vision is just as clear today…to plant the gospel throughout the United States until there is a candle in every community transforming them through the multiplication of disciples, leaders, churches, and movements

With Gratitude, Tammy Dunahoo

NEXTGEN NATIONALLY

• A scalable model “Discipleship Pathway” framework has been developed (nursery through college age

incorporating age specific goals, milestones and resources for families). Lesli Klingenmeier, Northeast District

NextGen Rep, has done an outstanding job leading this project.

• Each district committed to partnering with a local church to start at least one elementary after-school program,

or one middle school or high school Bible club. Natalie Werking (“Dive” after-school program) and Brian

Barcelona (One Voice Student Missions) have provided training and resources to districts.

• Each district committed to partnering with local churches to engage in “Every Campus” college ministry. The

focus of “Every Campus” in 2019 was prayer on college campuses.

• A WhatsNEXT trip for NextGen leaders to Cuba has been planned (summer 2020).

• A Children’s Curriculum is being developed which will include modules about Foursquare doctrine, the ministry

of the Holy Spirit and missions. Each module will have 4-6 lessons. The first module being addressed is “The

Holy Spirit”.

The NextGen subcommittee submitted the following recommendation to be approved by the Board.

“The Foursquare Church would significantly elevate the urgency for every local church to give intentional and

sustained focus to reaching, discipling, and mobilizing the next generation via our Foursquare Connections,

district conferences, social media, publications, and various communications.”

A full strategy is being planned in 2020 to execute this goal.

Page 10: Cabinet Report 2020 - foursquare-leader.s3.us-east-1 ...€¦ · Foursquare Ordained 4,746 Foursquare Licensed 1,927 All Foursquare Leaders by Category 0 ansitions 1000 2000 3000

North Pacific District: • We continued to implemented the 4 C’s (Care, Coach, Connect,

Collaborate) • Over 65, 1 on 1 Care meetings between NPD regional NextGen reps and

NexGen leaders of local churches • Held our 3rd annual NPD NextGen Leaders Connect with 94 NextGen

leaders and their spouses from the NPD gathering for a weekend of training and relationship.

• Launched 4 quarterly NPD NextGen Leaders Colab. We invite leaders regionally to a one day event for collaborative learning, hosted by our NPD NextGen Regional reps

• Over 2500 NextGen attended 10 camps in our district • Invested in, promoted and supported a Young Adults Conference at West

Side Church in Bend OR. Dealing with topics such as the church and its relationship and response with the LGBTQ community

• Continued to support and invest into the Uni2 Youth ministry focus on 2nd generation Latinos by hosting a summer camp and a winter leaders training.

• Quarterly meetings with Regional NextGen leaders reps for training and prayer – specifically covering the following topics

• First 2 Years – Essentials to get a good start. • Longevity • Leading Yourself Well • Ministry to post-Christian students • Creating a Discipleship Pathway for Students • Best Practices

• Promoted Next Gen Leaders in the NPD by inviting them to speak at our district conference.

• The NPD Generational Resource Strategy focuses on three principles: • Deeper Learning - That changes the way they see God. The way they do

ministry. The way they lead. Strip away the superficial layers of shallow training to ask the hard questions, grapple with the tough issues, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform their thinking.

• Authentic Conversations - It’s in the space between people that God shows up. We want to create settings for collaborative learning, growing, and processing - The needs, desires and dreams of generational leaders.

• Renewed Passion - Times of refreshing. Whether we engage generational pastors and leaders that are completely dry or their spirit overflows; we want to cultivate leadership that starts at Jesus’ feet. We will create environments that soak in the camaraderie of like-minded peers.

National Hispanic Commission The National Hispanic Commission continues its efforts to facilitate the U.S. Foursquare Hispanic movement and the collaborative partnership between districts, District Supervisors, and Hispanic leaders with missional dialogue, resourcing, and networking focused on achieving the Foursquare Church’s missional objectives out of the Hispanic community’s unique context and culturally appropriate expression of the gospel across the United States.

Conexión Hispana Every year, a growing number of U.S. and global Hispanic leaders come together at Conexión Hispana to worship the Lord, receive from His Word, and celebrate what God is doing in and through our Hispanic Foursquare family. In 2019, we had 374 registered adults with more in actual attendance.

Presidential Forum Angelus Temple Hispanic hosted the first Presidential Forum on April 2, 2019. It was an honor to have the candidates address the Foursquare family with live simultaneous translation to Spanish.

Exponential en Español Foursquare Hispanic pastors and leaders gathered in Long Beach, CA, for the first-ever two-day Exponential Conference offered entirely in Spanish. It was great to see dozens of Foursquare Hispanic leaders participating in such an essential catalytic church multiplication event.

M.A. in Leadership in Spanish In July of 2019, Life Pacific University launched the Master of Arts in Leadership program entirely in Spanish. They have initiated two cohorts with a total of 22 students (15 women and 7 men) most of which are Foursquare Hispanic pastors. Program Director, Dr. Daniel Ruarte, says “the M.A. in Leadership-Hispanic program at LPU continues to draw much interest across the United States and in Spanish-speaking countries around the world.” Gary Matsdorf, Global Education Coordinator for Foursquare’s Global Council, affirms “in the field we constantly hear from leaders about the new M.A. program.” We believe many more leaders will be able to earn this regionally accredited graduate-level degree in their heart language from Foursquare’s flagship institution of higher learning.

As well, Paul participated in several conferences, day events, speaking engagements and more throughout 2019.

The critical work of Center for Spiritual Renewal East continues to thrive from Christiansburg, VA, and beyond. With the springboard of our 2019 Foursquare theme of “Restored By Jesus”, renewed communication was launched to bring the availability of our Centers for Spiritual Renewal, both East and West, to the forefront of our Pastors minds.

A number of our Pastors stepped forward to share stories of renewal and transformation through the services of our CSR’s at Connection, in Foursquare email blasts, and a significant new video. As a result, we are experiencing a healthy increase of the number of visitors for the purposes of study breaks, Sabbath rest, and both proactive and reactive counseling needs.

2020 is off to a solid start as well, with the SoulCare Journey Experience being piloted in Heartland District in February, continuing in the MidSouth and Northeast Atlantic Districts in November, and a second Zoom pilot with a combined church planting cohort of

the Southeast and MidSouth Districts in January and February.

• Facilitated three SoulCare Journey Experiences, weekend retreats in 2 Districts with over 60 Pastors participating, including introducing the SoulCare Journey in the MidSouth District for the first time. New facilitators are being mentored and released.

• Piloted a SoulCare Journey Experience via Zoom video with the Southeast District Church Planters Cohort. • Presented an 8 hour workshop at the Foursquare Chaplains Conference on Emotionally Healthy Discipleship. • Participated in Foursquare Missions Int’l Personnel Care availability at pre-Connectiuon event in Nashville. • Presented a first ever post-Connection 3.5 hour workshop to 100 Foursquare Pastors on “How to Launch The Emotionally Healthy Discipleship

Course in Your Church” in Nashville. • Spoke at the Heartland District Fall Conference on Mental Health and the Church. • In partnership with long-standing relationship with Pete & Geri Scazzero and the ministry of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, trained 8 new

EHD Course Coaches across the nation, 2 of whom are Foursquare Pastors (Jamie Pagels, Pullman Foursquare Church in Pullman, WA, and Cheri Dunnigan, Coastlands Community Church in Chesapeake, VA). We currently have over 50 Foursquare Churches across the nation in some stage of integrating The EHD Course into their discipleship pathway.

• Spoke at several Foursquare Churches across the nation.

CSR West continues to offer essential, confidential, leading-edge, transformational counseling to our licensed Foursquare ministers and their immediate family. Our ministers and their immediate family are unfortunately affected by the same trends affecting our culture. Crippling depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, alcoholism, grief, sexual addictions of all types, along with diminishing marital satisfaction are issues that our ministers are finding freedom from on a regular basis through a two day transformational intensive here at CSR west. This unique, God centered approach, allows a minister to discover and define the heavy yolks on one’s soul that are affecting every relationship of their life, and then to find new freedom. All within a 24 to 28 hour session over two days. They are sent home with a clear understanding of their road ahead as well as the next steps defined for them, to shore up what God has done.

“CSR West offers not only the two day transformational intensive, but also married couples conferences

and emotional healing conferences for our ministers, as well as more traditional two hour counseling sessions

for initial assessments and follow through.”

The 2,300 annual hours and numbers of people served do not include those seen in a group setting such as a missions training conferences, or emotional healing conferences, etc. There are pastors and individual family members of those pastors that are alive today, and are serving in excellence and with fruitfulness today because of this service being provided by the Foursquare Church.

Foursquare Chaplains InternationalJason Reynolds, Director [email protected]

An endorsed Foursquare Chaplain is a pastor who may lead worship services, baptize new believers, officiate weddings, conduct

memorial services, teach and train personnel, lead community events, and provide guidance to those experiencing crisis and trauma.

In 2019 Foursquare Chaplains International endorsed 291 chaplains, a 20% growth rate since 2015. These men and women serve in

one or more missional congregations. They minister on military bases and are deployed with troops overseas. Chaplains are the

church serving in law enforcement agencies and visiting the incarcerated. They bring God’s presence to the aging, the sick and wounded, and the dying. Many are hired by universities and businesses across the country. In 2019 Foursquare chaplains served in

331 missional locations, a 15% growth over four years.

From these 331 congregations 4,956 people confessed their faith in Christ; 1192 were baptized, and 397 received the baptism with

the Holy Spirit.

Foursquare Chaplains International is composed of two primary branches:

U.S. MissionEmily Plater, North American Area Missionary

[email protected]

The Foursquare Church has great opportunity for expansion and growth within the ethnic and immigrant populations in the United States. As our nation’s diversity continues to grow, our need for a focused and intentional strategy to serve diversity well is both a matter of theological alignment and a critical

part of preparing for the future of our movement. In 2019, there were significant steps taken to respond to this opportunity.

Diversity Summit Outcomes: At the Diversity Summit, which was held in September 2018, key leaders gathered to identify obstacles to diversity that exist in our movement and to collaborate a way forward. In 2019, we began to implement the outcomes of the Diversity Summit which included the creation of a new team to advocate for diversity and to increase our welcome to the many ethnic and linguistic group within the United States.

Diversity Project In early 2019, Mauricio Rodriguez was hired to lead a one-year special project to review administrative systems with a multi-ethnic lens in order to identify and articulate administrative pathways that would serve ethnic leaders and churches. He specifically focused on licensing and church registration. This report was presented in January 2020 and strongly recommends significant changes to our current licensing and church registration processes. The North America Area Missionary and Diversity Advocate have been tasked with leading the implementation of the findings of the diversity project.

North America Area Missionary The Diversity Summit identified the need for a collaborative approach between the NCO and FMI and strongly recommended that a full time North America Area Missionary be hired to offer leadership in the area of ethnic churches and diversity while also serving as a cultural bridge and resource. August 1, 2019, Emily Plater began serving in this role.

Diversity Advocate The Diversity Summit identified the need for a multi-ethnic administration specialist to partner with the districts to serve and advocate for ethnic churches and leaders. The Diversity Advocate will also continue the work begun by Mauricio Rodriguez and will lead the implementation of the Diversity Project findings. October 1, 2019, Dan Cho began serving in this role.

Immigration Lawyer The Diversity Summit identified the critical need for an immigration specialist to replace Joe Gosha and create pathways for the US Foursquare Church to receive pastors and missionaries from other Foursquare nations. In January 2020, Debra Valladares was hired to serve as Associate Council with a focus on immigration.

Page 22: Cabinet Report 2020 - foursquare-leader.s3.us-east-1 ...€¦ · Foursquare Ordained 4,746 Foursquare Licensed 1,927 All Foursquare Leaders by Category 0 ansitions 1000 2000 3000

Looking to the Future: 2019 focused on discovering the areas in our current structures that are unintentionally serving as barriers to diversity and to establish a new multi-ethnic leadership team. This team was a direct outcome of the Diversity Summit and will continue leading the implementation of the Diversity Summit outcomes. As we look to the future, this team will focus on responding to the incredible opportunities that are in front of us as a movement.

Key areas of focus will include: • Utilizing quality translation to increase our culture of welcome and opportunities for various language groups. Strategic translation is also a crucial

element of creating administrative pathways that will serve all our leaders and churches, including those that do not primarily use the English language.

• Updating administrative and technological systems to serve diversity.

• Providing resources and developing systems to help immigrant and ethnic leaders who are looking for strong central office support that includes both financial and administrative support. This common expectation among our ethnic pastors and churches currently creates a significant tension since we are in midst of the decentralization of our movement.

• Developing strategies and networks to serve multi-ethnic NextGen ministry. Ministering to first generation and second-generation immigrants at the same time presents both unique challenges and opportunities. The youth of our immigrant and ethnic churches are the hope and future of our movement. These young people often speak multiple languages and are culturally agile, daily navigating the complexities of multiple cultures.

• Mobilizing the US church to send people on mission to live incarnationally among population groups within the United States that currently do not have a culturally appropriate gospel witness—including unreached people groups, campuses, and immigrant populations where Foursquare has no culturally or linguistically relevant churches.

Urban and Multi-Ethnic Committee A National Urban and Multi-Ethnic team has been established which will work alongside the North American Area Missionary and the Diversity Advocate to bring a multi-ethnic lens to our administrative systems and to serve as cultural bridges and advocates at both the national and district level.

Native American Outreach With 500 recognized Native American nations in the United States, Native American ministry continues to be an area of great need and opportunity. The Foursquare church continues to pursue its vision of reaching “to and through” Native Americans. This past year we celebrate the work on the Crow Agency in Montana where three young Native Leaders are completing the Foursquare licensing process. FMI Missionaries Yaseer and Monique Handall continue to work to pioneer ministry and relationships on new reservations throughout the west.

Portuguese Church Planting Continues The United States is currently home to the largest Brazilian population outside of Brazil and there is significant need and opportunity for Portuguese speaking church plants among the Brazilian immigrant population. In 2019, two new Portuguese churches were registered and four more are in the pipeline. Bhutanese Leadership Expansion

This past year we have seen significant growth in the leadership of our Bhutanese-Nepali churches. In 2019, we celebrated the ordination of three Bhutanese pastors and the licensing of five others. In November, we were also able to conduct a licensing interview completely in Nepali with an entirely Bhutanese interview panel. There are currently 5 Bhutanese churches in the pipeline to join Foursquare.

2019 Ministry Highlights

Multi-Ethnic Ministry Growth In 2019, the Gateway district hosted its first multi-lingual/multi-cultural Regional Gathering with 135 people in attendance. They also hosted their first multi-cultural youth camp. These events are creating a fresh sense of connection an excitement about what God is doing in and through ethnic and immigrant churches and also show the transformational power of a district multi-ethnic team.

Affinity NetworksEmily Plater, North American Area Missionary and Susan Spousta, Former Affinity Network Coordinator

[email protected]

Foursquare Affinity Networks originated four years ago as a joint effort of the NCO and FMI. In accordance with the overall plan, the research and development of our current networks have progressed in the following ways: 1) Seven networks have been created around present social needs. 2) A peer facilitator(s) has

been appointed to each network. These facilitators are practitioners in the given ministry focus, lending both experience and expertise to the learning and collaborative effort. 3) The Affinity Networks, which serve several social issues and community concerns, have been fully integrated into the U.S. mission of the

Foursquare Church. 4) Emily Plater, the FMI North American Area Missionary, will begin oversight of the networks and the facilitators in January 2020

• The networks enjoyed an unprecedented participation at Connection workshops in Nashville. Of the five networks represented, 300+ Connection attendees were present as Pastors Brad and Stella Reed, Farrell Lemings, Andy Millar, Brad Williams, and Timothy Russell shared the urgency of missional activity among the homeless, addicted, foster families, immigrants/refugees, university students, and trafficking victims. Approximately 90 workshop participants requested network information. In addition to a pastoral perspective, relevant resources were provided and/or suggested.

• The Compassion Network began an in-depth conversation around a training resource: The Incarnational Training Framework. Their learning and discovery will continue into the new year; a new Dream Center in West Virginia is in process as a result of network mentoring and encouragement.

• The Special Needs Ministries Network began a quest for viable training materials for churches to improve the experience of special needs children and adults. A network member authored and shared a curriculum for volunteers and online resources through the ministry of Joni and Friends was utilized. The network is working with the NCO to help tailor the language of the Foursquare Child and Youth Protection Manual to include special needs children. In the future, they hope to invoke Foursquare theologians/scholars to an in-depth study of the image of God found in those with disabilities and a balanced theology of healing to prepare our leaders and churches.

• The Refugee Care Network held two informational calls featuring district supervisors experienced with refugee and immigration issues.

• The Business as Mission Network hosted quarterly informational calls with entrepreneurs/BAM practitioners as guest presenters. The BAM network has also provided coaching and guidance to several BAM businesses in the U.S. and abroad.

Future Focus

As the networks move into a new year under the oversight of FMI, the recognition of holistic evangelization remains a valid concern. The theme for our coming Connection, COMPELLED BY JESUS, speaks to our ongoing verbal and tangible witness of the gospel compelled by an uncompromising commitment to Christ-like love in action. The networks will continue to encourage and promote Kingdom-focused ministry that serve people and places at their greatest point of need.
