ABSTRACT Eusebius of Caesarea, in (Onomasticon) said that: "Ailath (Aila) is situated at the ex- tremity of Palestine between the southern desert and the Red Sea where cargo was trans- ported by ship from both Egypt and India". There is no doubt that port of Aila- 'Aqaba was important for the sea trade during the Byzantine Period and ancient times. Aila acquired significance in the Byzantine Empire commerce and seafaring according to the information derived from the Byzantine histo- rians, documents and pilgrim’s archaeological excavations. This paper focuses on Byzantine Maritime Trade in port of Aila during the period be- tween the fourth and seventh centuries A.D, its importance in the flourishing of trade of southern Jordan, and its relations with other major trade centers such as Gaza, Alexandria and Ethiopia. There is no doubt that port of Aila- 'Aqaba was important for the sea trade during the

Byzantine Period and ancient times. Aila acquired significance in the Byzantine Empire

commerce and seafaring according to the information derived from the Byzantine histo-

rians, documents and pilgrim’s archaeological excavations.

This paper focuses on Byzantine Maritime Trade in port of Aila during the period be-

tween the fourth and seventh centuries A.D, its importance in the flourishing of trade of

southern Jordan, and its relations with other major trade centers such as Gaza, Alexandria

and Ethiopia.

It appears that port of Aila played a major role in the economy of Byzantine Empire and

international trade as attested in the accounts of historians, pilgrims who visited the area

during this period, and archaeological excavations which revealed that Aila was at least a

transit point and perhaps even a production site for fish sauce or related products in the

Byzantine period.

1. LOCATION AND CLIMATE

Aila ('Aqaba) located in the far south-western corner of Jordan; the city lies ap-proximately 320km south of the capital cityof Amman (Fig.1). Aqaba is the only portcity of the present- day country of Jordanand provide invaluable access to the RedSea. It lies at the junction of both land andsea routs from Asia, Africa and Europe.(Whitcomb,1988). The city surrounded bydesert –Sinai to the west, Negev to thenorth, and Hisma in southern Jordan andnorthwestern Saudi Arabia to the north-eastand east. The location of Aila was also of ageopolitical importance. Control of Ailameant the ability to move freely from thenorthern Hejaz towards southern Palestine.

The synoptic climatology of Jordan ispart of the climatology of the easternMediterranean basin (Shehadeh, 1985), and'Aqaba is influenced by a relatively wetMediterranean climate to the northwest anda hot, arid climate to the south and east.Temperature often exceeds 40o C in thesummer months. The average annual rain-fall in Aqaba is less than 50 mm (Shehadeh,1985).

2. MODERN AND ANCIENT AUTHORS

Information about the history of Ailacomes from a verity of sources. These in-clude the ancient Greek, Jewish, Byzantineauthors. Modern travel accounts of the 19th

and early 20th centuries and from evidenceof archaeological excavations were con-ducted of the past century. A variety of vari-ant spellings from these sources is attestedfor the site, including Laeanites, Aelanitic,Laeanitae, Laeana, Aelana, Laeanitic, Ae-lanitic, and Ayla1 (Parker, 1997, MacDonald,2000, Nasarat, 2009). In the Byzantine pe-riod this area belonged to the administra-tive unit of the province of Palaestina Tertia,until the Muslim invasion in ca. AD 630.(Fiema, 1991)

2.1 Greek Authors

The first historical accounts of the Ailaoccur in the writings of unknown author inhis book (The Periplus on the Erythraean Sea)

by account of Agatharchides of Cnidus(145-132 B.C) who mentioned it as: "…

Laeanites Gulf, around which there are many

villages of the so –called Nabataean Arabs"

(Brown,1973). Artemidorus of Ephesus (103B.C.) is another classical sources mentioningAila, he inform us of the palm groves lo-cated inland from the Aelanitic Gulf (War-rington and Hornblower, 1996).

Pliny in his Natural History in the 1st cen-tury inform us that the Gulf has manynames, he said that 'then there is a bay run-

ning far inland on which live the Laenitae, who

have given it their name. there capital is Agra,

and on the bay is Laeana, or as others call it Ae-

lana, for the name of the bay itself has been writ-

ten by our people as Laeanitic, and by others as

Aelanitic, while Artemidorus gives it as Ae-

lanitic and Juba as Laeanitic" (Rackham et al,1962). In an other account he mentions that“The two gulf of the Red Sea where it con-verges on Egypt are called the Gulf of Suezand the Sinus Aelanticus between the twotowns of Aelana and Gaza, which is on theMediterranean, there is a space of 150

miles". (Rackham et al, 1962) The Latin word used by Pliny to describe

Aila (Oppidum) is usually translated as“Town”, this is significant because it sug-gests that the site was of a rather modestsize, otherwise he would have likely re-ferred to it as urbs, which would be imply amajor urban center like Rome, completewith all of its administrative components,such as, a senate house (bouleuterion)(Dolinka, 2003).

Diodorus Siculus in the lat 1st centuryprovided further information about the in-habitants of the "Laenites Gulf "After onehas sailed past this country the LaeanitesGulf comes next, where many inhabitedvillages of Arabs exist, who are Known asNabataeans, this tribe occupies a large partof the coast (Geer, 1961). Strabo in the early1st century in his Geography provides anadditional account in which he states thatthe Aelanitic Gulf and Nabataeans is a“country with a large population and well sup-plied with pasturage" (Jones, 1930), and heprovided more information about this portwhen he descrbes the Nabataeans as mid-dleman in aromatics trade. Strabo statesthat ”Cattabania produces frankincense, andChateramotitis produces myrrh…both these andother aromatics are bartered to merchants. Thesearrive there in 70 days from Aelana with the Mi-naeans …but the Gerrhaeans arrive at Chater-amotitis in 40 days" (Jones, 1930).

Strabo also mentions port of Aila whenhe describes the road run between the portof Gaza on the Mediterranean Sea and Gulfof Aela,"Thence (from Gaza) there is said tobe an overland passage of 1.260 Stadia2 toAela, a city (polis) situated near the head ofthe Arabian Gulf. This head consist of tworecesses: one extending into the region nearArabia and Gaza which is called Aelanites,after the city situated on it" (Jones, 1930).This description from both Diodorus Sicu-lus and Strabo suggest that Aila was origi-nally a Nabataeans settlement, and alsosuggest that Aila was sizable settlement bythe early first century. This passage pro-

vides important information, that Aila wasa polis, which implies an urban community.It is interesting to note that although Strabodoes mention an Aila- Gaza route, he makesno mention of maritime activities at Aila(Dolinka, 2003).

Regarding the geographical books the ge-ographer Claudius Ptolemy who write ca150 A.D. mentioned Aila as "the village(κώμη) of Elana, which is located in the angleof the bay of this name…" (Nobble, 1932).From these literary sources we can recon-struct how this "harbour system" workedduring the Roman Period, according toPtolemy the ports of the Red Sea from thenorth to south Clysma, Philoteras, MyosHormos, Leukos Limen, Berenike, Aila andLeuke Kome (Nobble, 1932) (Fig.2)

2.2 Jewish Author

Another important source for the historyof Aila and its name is from Jewish historianFlavius Josephus, who wrote in the late 1st

century A.D. he said that "the king (Solomon)also built many ships in the Egyptian gulf of theRed Sea at a certain place called Gaison–gablenot far form the city of Ailana (πόλις), which isnow called Berenike" (Thomas, 1998).

From Roman and Byzantine sources wecan derived a lot of information about Ailaand it is important during this period thePeutinger Table (Fig.3).

A fourth road map of Roman Empire, lo-cates Aila fifty Roman miles3 from Phara(n),that is, the Feiran oasis in Wadi Feiran insouth Sinai, and sixteen from Dianam.(Webr, 1976, Finkelstein, 1979). ThePeutinger Table was not a miltiry map, asthere are no military garrisons named on it,and has been suggested that it may havebeen deissigned for use by the cursus publi-cus, the Roman impiarial postal service(Dolinka, 2003). The city of Aila appearswith the name of Haila where tow roadsmet: the first one comes from Bosra and thesecond one emanates from Jerusalem (Al-Salameen, 2004)

The Notitia Dignitatum (Or 34.30) is a listof all high offices in the eastern and westernparts of the Roman Empire, dated to theend of the fourth and the end of the fifthcenturies (Peters, 1984, Parker, 1982). Fromthis source we learn that the Praefecuts le-gionsis decimae Fretensis (the 10th LegionFretensis) was stationed at Aila during thelate 4th / early 5th century A. D. (Mayerson,1963). This legion was the only garrisonmentioned clearly by name in the Onomas-ticon (Isaac, 1996). The byzantine historianEusebius of Caesarea (4th century) stat thatthe Legion 10th Fretensis stationed at Aila in

the late 3rd / early 4th century A.D. shortlyafter the Roman brought the legion fromJerusalem to stay in Aila (Isaac, 1996). Thepresence of the Roman legion there rein-forces the strategic importance and eco-nomic value of the site and supports thenotion that by ca. A.D. 300, Aila was cer-tainly more than a “town” (Dolinka, 2003).It is reasonable to associate the Byzantinefortifications with the presence of 10th Le-gion Fretensis, based at Aila throughout thefourth century and presumably into thefifth century (Parker, 1996).

Procopius of Caesarea gave another ac-count relation to Aila in sixth century A.D.in which he states that “for the sea which one

traverses beyond this point as far as the shore

and the city of Aelas, has received the name of

the Arabian gulf, in as much as, the country

which extends from her to the limits of the city

of Gaza used to be called in olden times Arabia,

since the king of the Arabs had this palace in

early times in the city of Petra” (William,1904)The information provided by the classical

sources sheds light on ancient port at Ailaduring the ancient times, but there remaingaps in our information, especially concern-ing changes in the size and population ofAila from the 1st century B.C. to the middleof the 2nd century A.D. (Dolinka, 2003)

3. HISTORY OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT

Archaeological excavations in Aqaba hasshown an early occupation to the prehis-toric periods (Frank, 1934; Glueck 1935).There is clear evidence of human activity inthe city in the prehistoric era, especially theMiddle Paleolithic, Pre-pottery Neolithic,and Chalcolthic periods (4500 B.C-3200B.C.) (Parker,1996).

Occupation is at Tell Al- Maqass4 and itsassociated sites, dated to the mid-fourth,millennium B.C. and now ca 4 km north ofthe present coastline. Al- Maqass was iden-tified as a metal manufacturing workshopfrom the second half of the fourth millen-nium B.C. (Zayadine, 1994, Khalil, 1985) In

the Iron II and Persian periods the onlyknown settlements west at Tell al-Khalayfi5,an archeological site located ac 500 m northof the modern shoreline of Aqaba. Tradevia the red sea was certainly thriving in hisperiod (Parker,1996). Glueck followedFrank who first identified Tell al-Khalayfiin Aqaba with Ezion Geber of the biblewhich was an important outlet during theSolomonic Period. The Old Testament men-tions that “King Solomon also built ships atEzion Geber, which is near the Elath inEdom, on the shore of the Red Sea’’ (I Kings9: 26). But the identification of the site withEzion Geber becomes doubtful because thearchaeological remains uncovered at thesite cannot be dated to the 10th century B.C.(Zayadine, 1994). Excavations in these sitesrevealed a series of successive settlementsbetween the 4th and 8th centuries (Glueck,1938, Glueck, 1965).

Patrico determined that the site was notfunded prior to the eighth century B.C. asGluck had originally postulated, but thatwas likely established by the Edomites6, agroup of people who typically inhabited theNegev Desert (eighth – sixth century B.C.)(Allison, 2007; Zayadine, 1994). During theHellenistic period and after the division ofAlexander's legacy among his heirs it fellunder Ptolemaic rule until 198 B.C., when itpassed under the dominion of the Seleucidswho gained complete authority in Palestineat the Battle of Panion (Parker 2000; Al-Salameen, 2003).

In the 6th century B.C. the Nabataeansgradually replaced the Edomites, and set-tled the region. In 106 A.D. Trajan’s annexa-tion Nabataea as the Roman Province ofArabia brought Aila under direct Romanrule. It is impossible as yet to evaluate theimpact of the Roman annexation of A.D. 106upon Aila. Continuity of occupation fromthe early Roman to the Late Roman periodsdemonstrated in some area of excavations(Parker, 1996).

The via nova Traiana, which extendedthrough Arabia from the borders of the

Roman Province of Syria to its southern ter-minus at Aila, was completed between A.D111-114 (Parker, 1997) Tow milestones of thevia nova Traiana have recently been discov-ered at Aila itself (MacAdam, 1989). Theconstruction of the via nova Traiana was de-signed as a strategic as well as an adminis-trative and commercial project. Thecompletion of the via nova Traiana furthersouth to Aila highlights the economic im-portance of the city (Abudanh, 2006).

Here, we must to say that the completionof the Vai Nova Traina in 111-114 with its at-tendant forts and garrisons probably im-proved both physical infrastructure andsecurity for commercial traffic (Parker, 1996)

Around the third-fourth century A.D.Christianity appeared in Aila7, the firstknown bishop, Petrus, participated in thecouncil of Nicea in 325 A.D, and the bishopBeryllus attended the council of Chalcedonin 451 A.D. (Zayadine, 1994, Nasarat 2009).The presence of another Christian monu-ment in the city is now proved by a lintelthat was discovered near the northeasterntower of Islamic Ayla (Zayadine 1994).Meloy noted that the mound was rich insurface artifacts, including pottery and glasssherds and ceramic slag. Most of the surfacepottery was Byzantine, especially fifth sixthcenturies A.D. (Meloy, 1991). Thus it washoped that excavation of this mound wouldprovide evidence of Byzantine Aila.

Thomas Parker conducted an extensivearchaeological excavation at Aila from 1994-2002 Known as the Roman Aqaba Project,in which he excavated many sites dated tothe Nabataeans/ Roman, and Byzantine pe-riods within the Circular Area of Aqaba andin the surrounding area and definitively lo-cated the ancient city of Aila (Fig 2) (Parker,1996). The archaeological evidence confirmsthe impression gained from the literarysources that the port of Aila was particu-larly active during Byzantine period.

Recent archaeological excavations con-ducted by Whitcomb in diverse regions atAila reveled that the city witnessed a

human settlement during Nabataean,Roman and Byzantine periods (Whit-comb,1995). Preliminary examination of thepottery collected suggests continues occu-pation from the Nabataean, Roman, andByzantine periods. (Whitcomb, 1993).TheUmayyed period is also well represented.There is no doubt that Aila served as an im-portant commercial center during the earlyIslamic period (Magness, 1998).

4. AILA MARITIME TRADE

The main entrepots of South Arabian andEthiopian trade in the Byzantine periodwere the major maritime harbors in theNorth, preliminary Aila, and Clysma. Ailahad been a trans-shipment point for easterngoods in the preceding periods, primarilyfor those disembarked in Leuce Come(Fiema,1991). It appears in historical sourcesas a major maritime station. Eusebius wasaware that Aila was a port of navigation toboth India and Egypt (Fiema,1991).

The geographical position of port of Ailaat the junction of roads that led from LeukeKome and Egypt served the need of travel-ers and caravans for rest and security beforethe continuing their journey through desert.As a port at the head of gulf that faced theRed Sea, costal vassals could engage in traf-fic with African and Arabian trading centeron the Red Sea, venturesome seagoing mer-chant vassals could pursue trade with portson the Indian Ocean (Mayerson, 1996)

It is worth mentioning that economicconsideration played a role in promotingmaritime commerce. Given that it wasmuch cheaper and lower cost in antiquity toship goods in bulk of sea than it was totransport them overland (Sidebotham,1989). Aila was on of the important sea citieslike Gaza, Alexandria and Antioch duringthe Byzantine period.

It is apparent from the literary sourcesthat the Aila was an important commercialcenter and outlet at the head of the Read Sea,especially during the period under discus-

sion and previous periods. Our knowledgeof these maritime trade relied on the testi-mony of texts, it has since benefited from thecontributions of archaeological excavations.Recent analysis (using neutron activationanalysis) of a garum (the ubiquitous fish-sauce of classical antiquity) container froman early Byzantine context from Ez- Zanturat Petra revealed that the fish were from theRed Sea (Parker, 2000); all this suggests thatAila was at least a transit point and perhapseven a production site for fish-sauce or re-lated products in the Roman and Byzantineperiods (Parker, 2000)

In 312 B.C Ptolemy I occupied Syria andPalestine with eastern Jordan. Thus Ailawas incorporated into the realm in thePtolemaic Kingdom until 198 B.C. whenSyria was conquered by the Seleucid Anti-ochus II (Ghawanmeh, 1986). Ptolemy IIdisplayed his interest in the coast of the Ara-bian Peninsula by dispatching Ariston tocarry out a scouting mission in the region.The principal aim of this mission was to re-store the maritime route between Aila andAden (Ghawanmeh,1986; Bartlett, 1972).The Ptolemies had commercial interests inboth southern and northern Arabia; theyused to import various commodities fromsouth Arabia, Africa and India through theNabataeans who controlled the overlandtrade routes (Rostovtzeff, 1932, Al-Salameen, 2003).

The Ptolemies had desired to be a majorcommercial power in the Mediterraneanworld in the last century B.C. They couldnever hope to monopolize all the traderoutes concerning the Mediterranean basinwith lands to the east. They were nevermore than a regional power in the easternMediterranean and were constantly in com-petition with other regional and local pow-ers like the Seleucids and the Nabataeans(Sidebotham, 1989).

According to Agatharchides of Cnidus,as quoted by Diodorus of Sicily, the policyof the Ptolemies invited the reaction of theNabataeans, and encouraged them to

threaten any notion which might effect theirrevenues. They adopted a policy of piracyin the Red Sea against their neighbors, thePtolemies. The same author refers to the pi-ratical activities of the Nabataeans in theRed Sea: "Now in ancient times these men – theNabataeans- observed justice and were contentwith food which they received from their flocks,but later, after the kings of Alexandria had madethe way of the sea navigable for their merchants,these Arabs not only attacked the shipwrecked,but fitting out pirate ships preyed on the voy-agers…". (Geer, 1961).

The attacks can be understood in relationto the commercial competition between theNabataeans carveneers and Ptolemaic shipowners. It could at the same time be the re-sponse of the Petra traders to the occupationof Aila by Ptolemies who renamed Berenike(Tarn, 1929; Zayadine, 1994).

Berenike the southern most of the Egypt-ian Red Sea ports, was probably the largestand most important (Jones, 1930), at least inthe first century B.C. to first-second centuryA.D. Ptolemy II founded the port in theearly third century B.C and named it afterhis mother (Sidebotham, 1989)

Diodorus of Sicily, tells us also that theNabataeans, "... lead a life of brigandage andoverrunning a large part of the neighboring ter-ritory they pillage it. Some had penetrated to theMediterranean coast where they indulged inpiracy, profitably attacking the merchant shipsof Ptolemaic Egypt” (Geer, 1961).

From these accounts we can concludethat the Nabataeans were equally at homeon the seas as they were in the desert. How-ever, not only did they engage in piracy,they also engaged in merchant trade whichwas considered near-piracy by those buyingand selling to merchants.

Strabo also given another account aboutNabataeans activities in the Red Sea andAila, he says: ’’these Nabataeans formerly livedin a peaceful life, but later , by means of raftswent to plundering the vassals of the people sail-ing from Egypt" (Jones, 1930). Also men-tioned that Aila was an important transfer

point for goods moving between the landand sea trade routes (Jones, 1930).

At the time of Nabataean King MalichusII (40-70 A.D) the port of Aila was occupiedby the Nabataeans, as can be deduced fromtow graffiti from Wadi Mukattab in theSinai and Hegra- Madai'an Saleh. The firstone (CIS 1205) reads: “Peace Abdulge son ofWa'ilu who resides in Aylat". Both names arewell attested in the Nabataeans Onomasti-con, and the verb "mr (resides)" confirmsthat this merchant was citizen of Aila (Za-yadine, 1994). The other short inscriptioncommemorates W'ailuson of Qashru who isfrom Aylat (Zayadine, 1994). Both graffitiare good testimony to a Nabataeans pres-ence in this port in the first century A.D.

We have sufficient evidence to suggestprosperous city during the Nabataeans pe-riod, since most of the commodities eitherexported or imported may will have passedthrough it. Recent discoveries at the Ailahave yielded fine imported tables waresfrom the eastern Mediterranean (Parker,1997). Aila was flourishing Nabataean set-tlement by the 1st century B.C. A wide vari-ety of trade goods, such as wine, oil, glass,metal, and apparently passed through theport in this period (Parker, 2000).

The Nabataean Government probably is-sued edicts to protect its local productionand to prevent merchants from monopoliz-ing trade in some rare commodities, espe-cially during their trade in Port of Aila. Noevidence is available from Nabataea to sup-port this (Al- Salameen, 2004).

Our influential sources about the com-modities during Nabataeans period is theNatural History of Pliny, who gives detaileddescription of various commodities ex-changed in the Roman world. He focusespreliminary only on those that were highlydemanded and esteemed in Rome, andwhich were imported from Arabia, Syria,East Africa and India (Al- Salameen, 2004).

Moreover, the archeological excavationshave revealed Nabataean Pottery in addi-tion to the so-called Koan Amphora which

was produced in the western Mediter-ranean from the first century BC to the firstcentury A.D. There was fine Ware Potteryfrom Petra, glass, imported amphorae, andsherds of eastern Sigillata, Cypriot Sigillataand imported lamps (Parker, 1996, Al-Salameen, 2004).

All these were proved and determinedthrough the scientific technique of X-ray orneutron activation analysis and chemicalanalysis, all of these tolls help us to deter-mine the origin of this pottery.

Direct Roman rule in Aila began in 106A.D with Trajan’s annexation of Nabataeaand the creation of Provincia Arabia, andwhen Aila became the southern terminus ofthe great via nova Traiana connecting Syriawith the Red Sea (Parker, 1994). Trajan (98-117) linked Clysma (the Gulf of Suez) to theNile by canal and built roads between Ailaand Bostra and these tow ports definitivelyoutside Berenike and Leuke Kome(Hourani, 1984). Clysma and Aila appear ascenter of Red Sea shipping in the Islamictradition (Crone,1987). He also rebuilt andimproved the roads which connected theRed Sea and Mediterranean. Goods fromAila and Clysma could also have beentransported by means of the Trajanic canal(Fiema, 1991).

The Christian sites in southern and east-ern Sinai (e.g., St. Catherina) and the coppermines of Sinai were connected to Aila by aroad running through the Wadi Watir, WadiFeiran, and the Wadi Mukattab. A branchtrack led to the Wadi Haggag and Dhahab,with a subsequent sea- borne crossing to thecommercial center of Maqna on the easternshore of the Gulf of Aqaba (Fiema, 1991). Itseems that the pilgrim traffic to Mount.Sinai probably increased local demand forgoods and services.

How the Romans actually managed theirtrade relations with India in the same pe-riod is equally well known: once a year,Roman ships would depart from the portsof the Red Sea and sail towards India wherethey would collect those eastern items

(such as spices, silk, pearls, ivory, etc.) forwhich broad demand existed within theborders of the Empire (Nappo, 2009).

Trade in the Red Sea, following the vac-uum created by the difficulties of the fourthcentury, fell into the hands of the EthiopianAxumites and the Himyarites of South Ara-bia. It was these new entities, serving as in-termediaries between the Romans and thePersians-the latter effectively controllingtrade with India-that transshipped mer-chandise from India and the Far East intoRoman territory. In fact, knowledge of sub-continental India was virtually lost to theRomans. (Mayerson,1993)

Recent archaeological excavations reveledthat several largely ceramic vessels, amongthese was a so- called Koan amphora pro-duced in the western Mediterranean in thefirst centuries BC/AD. These vessels werewine containers (Parker, 1996). They are at-tested at other Red Sea ports and as far eastas India (Peacock and Willaims,1986). It thusconstitutes important evidence for winetraded from the western Mediterranean tothe Red Sea via Aila in the Early Roman Pe-riod (Parker,1996). A few sherds of hand-made vessels, tentatively identifies asimports from South Arabia (Parker, 1997),and many of these vessels almost certainlycarried wine, olive oil and sesame oil intothe city of Aila (Peacock and Willaims, 1986;Parker, 1997).

Also, the excavations conducted by Th.Parker in Aila revealed a complete wheel-made lamp and several other Egyptianlamp fragmentes (so- called “frog lamps”)attest connections with Egypt during theRoman period (Parker, 1998). A notable findwas a mirror handle of iron and ivory,clearly an import.

Many sherds of important Egyptian am-phorae from both the mud- brick structureand associated cemetery attest connectionswith Egypt and may even imply the pres-ence of an Egyptian Christian community atAila in the fourth century (Parker, 1998).Other late Roman and Byzantine period am-

phorae attested at Aila, possibly an olive oilcontainer from northern Syria and AsiaMinor (Peacock and Willaims, 1986). By theearly fifth century Aila seems to have beenproducing its own transport containers (theso-called “Aila- Axum amphorae”), whichreached as far south as Ethiopia and suggestvigorous commercial activity (Parker, 1998;Parker, 2000).

The lack of olive pits is less surprising forthe region's present environment could nothave supported substantial olive cultivationand thus olives and olive oil were probablyimported into the city (Parker, 1996), butmore excavations is required to test thissuggestion. A variety of stone imported forvarious uses also passed through the port ofAila in the Roman period, including marble,limestone, basalt, sandstone and alabaster(Parker, 1996).Varieties of imported stonereached Aila in the Roman and Byzantineperiods. Some twenty of marble, mostly ar-chitectural elements and used in paved landof churches, were recovered in 1996. Basaltwas imported for mortars, mills, andgrinders, probably from the Arabian penin-sula, beginning in the fourth century ascooking bowls, and, later also, lamps andother types of vessels, objectives of al-abaster, limestone, and sand stone are alsoattested (Parker, 1997).

Clearly, Aila had golden age during theRoman and Byzantine periods, and ac-quired a widely – acknowledged signifi-cance in the Roman as well as Byzantineworld of commerce and seafaring. Tow fineroads served Aila. One of theses roads con-nected it to Damascus; the other roads con-nected Aila to Gaza on the Mediterraneancoast (Ghawanmeh, 1986) (Fig. 4). Gaza alsoseems an obvious Medterininain outlet forgoods from Aila transported along the Darbel-Ghazzh. Timotheus of Gaza mentiond inthe late fifth century that a trader in Indaingoods and a native of Aila had passedthrouth Gaza bringning two giraffes and anelephant as gifts for the Emperor Anastasius( Fiema, 1991).

There were also routs connected Ptlo-maic, Nabataean, and Roman Ports at thenourthern end of the Red Sea with maritimeemporia elswhere in the Red Sea and IndianOcean (Sidebotham, 1989). It is clear thatsince the 4th century A.D, Aila and Clysmaplay a signifiant role in the area.

Luxury products, such as frankincense,myrrh, and spices, were off-loaded fromships to camel to caravans for transport intothe Empire, and caravans from Damascusand the interior could meet and trade withships coming up the Red Sea from Africaand the east (Parker, 1994).

Since the time of the Diocletian (284-305A.D) the Roman Empire displayed a clearpolicy in the Red Sea aimed to develop therole and the importance of the northernports in the Red Sea, such as Aila andClysma. Aila became the basis of the (10th

Legion Fretensis) (Nappo, 2009) and wit-nessed a consistent urban boom from the 4th

century A.D. onwards (Nappo, 2009). Epiphanius (c.315-403) provides infor-

mation on how Indain goods enteredRoman territory during the mid-third cen-tury, In the course of descriping how Mani(215-277A.D) , the founder of Manichaeism,acquired his wealth, he takes us back to thesource of it; namely, a hellenized Saracen

from Arabia named Scythianus who tradedin goods that came from India. The ports ofAila and Clysma are mentioned, but it is theport of Berenice in upper Egypt leading tothe Thebaid, to Alexandria, to all Egypt, andthe Pelusium that provided Scythianus withthe means to acquire great wealth (Mayer-son 1993).

The citations dealing with the so-calledIndian trade are more troublesome. Al-though writers from the fourth century on-ward cite Clysma and Aila as ports on thearms of the Red Sea which receive ships andproducts from India, we do not knowwhether they refer to cargo vessels originat-ing in the east or are craft transshippingmerchandise off-loaded at other ports, or ifthe merchandise originated in Ethiopia,south Arabia (Mayerson, 1993).

The Aila port may has been denselypooulated only when merchent ships left orreturned from their voyages at spacific timesof the year. Sailing times depend upon pre-viling wind patterns in the Red Sea and themonosoons in the indaian ocean. (Side-botham, 1989). Due the extermelly arid cli-mate (mean annual precitation is 4mm),little could be cultivated at the port. Even thedrinking water had to be hauled in by packanimal with great effort from distant wellsand springs. Fore example, some of thesprings are close to the site like 'Ain 'Abu'Insor situtated just above the new 'Aqaba-Ma'an roadway, and 'Ain el Jamam, theseclosly related sites provide evidance of goodwater sourses which provide a relatavlyconstant water supply for the areas at pres-ent. (Jobling, 1983). Aqueducts from reser-voirs fed by these spring were traced as farsouth as Khirbt Humeima. Initial explo-ration would suggested that the aquifers inthe Ras en-Naqb escarpment were soursesof water and the foucus for the developedhydrology of the area in the later Romanand Byzantine periods (Jobling, 1983).

In the second half of 4th century theByzantine historian Philostorgius men-tioned that Aila receveing merchandis from

the East, and termed it a polis (Fiema 1991).Evidence for trade with India, and indeed,for the presence of Indians on the site, hascome in from of: pottery of Indian origin(Parker, 1997; Shajan et al, 2008). Quantitiesof imported poetry suggests Aila’s role as anexus of commercial exchange. Aila was sit-uated at the southern end of Wadi Arabah,where copper mining was conducted forcenturies. Hundreds more fragments ofcopper and bronze were found in 1996 ex-cavations, combined with more remains ofcopper ore, copper slag and iron slag, pro-vide further evidence of metal- working atAila in the Roman and Byzantine periods.Much of this copper derived from the minesof Wadi Arabah (Parker, 1997).

The evidence from Aila suggests an in-tensification of trade during the 4th century(the beginning of the Byzantine period) andthat Aila was an important port through theEarly Islamic period (Parker, 2006). TheByzantine trade extended to the east,reached India by way of Aila at the head theRed Sea, the presence of amphora’s fromAqaba throughout the Red Sea region andat Axum, and finds of Axumite coins inJerusalem, testify to relations that were notexclusively religious (Laiou, 2002). The in-creasing use of the port of Aila during the4th century could be related to the need tokeep a tight control on the trade and to bet-ter exploit the route linking to the Axumiteally, and of this specific route might also bea key to understand the reasons behind theultimate decline of Berenike after the mid-dle of the 5th century A.D. (Nappo, 2009).

We can say that from the 4th century on-wards the Byzantines reorganized their po-sitions on the Red Sea: the ports of thenorthern Red Sea were linked up withAxum and the Byzantine state became in-creasingly involved in the trade with thatcountry. Proof of the increasing importanceof the northern Byzantine settlement on theRed Sea in the general economy of the areacan be also found analyzing the potterysherds from sites on the southern Arabian

coast, such as Khor Rori and Qana. It is clearthat those ports became more and morecommercially connected to Aila and Axumfrom the end of the 5th century A.D, andeven more from the beginning of the 6th cen-tury (Nappo, 2009).

Toward the end of the fifth century, thereis evidence of new activity in the economiclife of Aila and the Red Sea. The EmperorAnastasius (491-518), noted for his measuresto rehabilitate the financial resources of theempire, undertook to collect customs dutieson foreign merchandise entering imperialports. Prior to 473, Roman customs officerswere known to have been stationed on theisland of Iotabe in the Red Sea at that time,a wily Persian Saracen named Amorkesostook possession of the island.(Mayerson,1996). At the 5th century A.D another impor-tant chapter in the history of Byzantine Ailawas began, the advanture of Amerkesos orImru' al-Qays8. During the regin of Byzan-tine emproor Leo I (457-474), an Arab chiefAmerkesos was a Ghasanid dignitary, li-vivng in the Lakhmid Sasanain territory ofHira (Shahid,1989). According the historiog-rapher Malchus of Philadelphia, Amerkesosmoved to that part of Arabai which was thatadjacent to Persia. When leaving Hira, onthe lower Euphrates, the Arab chief musthave passed through Wadi el-Sarhan andDumat al-Jandal to the nourtherrn Hijaz andto the Red Sea coast. He seized the island ofthe Iotabe9 (Map.5), at the mouth of the Gulfof Aila, avictid the officials and becamewealthy by collecting the taxes (Shahid 1989;Mayerson, 1992; Nasarat, 2009). At the sametime, Amerkesos occupied several villagesin the Gulf of Aila, designated by Malchusof Philadelphia in "Arabai Petraea” (Shahid,1989), and he wished to become an ally ofthe Romans and a phylarch of the Saracensunder Roman rule in Arabia Petraea(Shahid, 1989).

After his successes on land and sea, theArab chief sent Petrus, the bishop of histribe, to Constantinpole to negotiate withLeo the quastion of his phylarchate in Pales-

tine Tertia. Petrus accomplished his missionwith skilled diplomacy. For 25 years,Amerkesos enjoyed full autonomy in the is-land of Iotabe and the Petraean territory(Shahid, 1989; Zayadine, 1994). About ca.498 under Anastasius, Romanus, accordingto Theophanes, undertook a punitive cam-paign against the Saracens, who were caus-ing serious damage to the Provincia (Mangoand Scott, 1997; Mayerson, 1992). In greatbattles Romanus gave Roman merchantsonce again the opportunity to inhabit the is-land and the fetch cargoes from the Indians,and to bring in the tribute appointed by theRoman Emperor. The Roman aim is clearlydefined, direct access to the Indian trade bystate –supported merchants (Smith,1954).

Theophanes comments that the island ofIotabe in the Red Sea had at one time pro-duced considrable tax revenues for theRoman emperor before its occupations bythe Saracens. Romanus liberated the islandand turned it over to Roman traders allow-ing them to live there as an autonomouscommunity, to export cargoes (i.e., to trans-ship merchandise) from India, and to pro-duce regular revenue for the emperor(Mayerson, 1992).

In the 5th century the Greek writer of

manuscript “the Itinerary from the Paradise ofEden to the Country of the Romans” men-tioned Aila as an important port at thenorthern head of the Red Sea, where as thegoods and commodities reached fromIndia, and transported to Egypt, then viaMediterranean to Rome and Belad (Al-Gall-France). The writer of manuscript limits thedistance between Aila and Egypt with (7stages) (Mayerson, 1993). The Itinerary ofAntonius of Placentia (ca 570) explicitlystated that Aila was harbor to which shipsfrom India brought aromatics. (Fiema,1991). This indicates that the port of Aila hasbeen active during the 5th century as the ev-idence of Antonius.

It seems that the port of Aila whos pros-perous during the 6th century, and the Ege-ria's account mentioned that products fromIndia were transported by Ethiopian tradersto their own markets of Adulis and even toports of Clysma and Aila. One of the prin-ciple sources about the Eastern trade in theByzantine period is the work of Cosmas10

Indicopleustes (c. 530) who says that Aduliswas much frequented by traders who camefrom Alexandria and Ela (= Aila) (Mayer-son, 1993). Greek ships where returningfrom India to Aila about 570 A.D. with aro-matics (Crone, 1987). Alexandria was men-tioned in the Expostitio Totius Mundi as cityopulent through the trade of aromatics. thetransport of merchandise from Aila wouldhave followed the road through Clysma,where Oriental goods were also disem-barked, to Babylon in Egypt, and thencedown the Nile to Alexandria (Fiema,1991).

In the 6th century Procopius gives a longaccount of navigation in the red Sea, andAila was important port there, he said that:"the boundaries of Palestine stretch to the seacalled Red… and a city lies on its shore calledAila… As you sail on, the land on either side isvisible as far as the islands Iotaba, not less thana thousands stades distant from Aila" (Smith,1954). The mention of the site during 6thcentury by Procopius suggests that Aila wasstill a functioning port in the early 6th cen-

tury.During the reign of Emperor Justinian

(527-565 A.D) the long process of extendingthe Byzantine influence through the Red Seaarea was concluded. For a short but signifi-cant period, the Byzantines were so able tomake the Red Sea a Mare Internum, like theMediterranean, this aim was achievedthrough two strategies, first of all, by improv-ing Byzantine direct presence on Red Searand reorganizing Byzantine settlements inthe area. On the other hand, a sharp foreignpolicy led to include Axum within the Byzan-tine "commonwealth". These achievementswere exploited by Justinian who establisheda trade route via Himyar and Axum bringingsilk into the Empire while bypassing Persia(Simon, 1989; Nappo, 2009). During the 6th

century Byzantium did everything to pro-mote trade in two of its ports on the Red Sea,Clysma and Aila and was in fact fairly suc-cessful. The Byzantine traders could findthere silk and aloes from China, pepper fromIndia and Malabar, copper and cloth fromIndia, and all of these goods entered theByzantine territory along the main maritimeroute the Red Sea and the outlets of port Ailaand Clysma (Fiema,1991). The Byzantine ex-ports to the markets of Ethiopia, South Ara-bia, India and Ceylon presumably includedtextiles, glass and luxurious objects (Fiema,1991; Crone, 1987). Thousands of fragmentsof glass have been recovered from Aila, butthere is as yet no evidence of local glass pro-duction, some seems to be of Egyptian man-ufacture, but it appears that the bulk of theglass is of Syro-Palestinian origin (Parker,1997).

During the period of Justine II (565-578A.D.), the Byzantines imported the silkfrom India, and merchandise by ships toAdolis, then transported to Aila in northhead of the Read Sea, then by land to thecoasts of Belad Ash-Sham (Simon,1989,Nasarat, 2009). The recent archaeologicalexcavations at Aila have been revealed thatthey were some coins, dating from the latethird to mid-fourth centuries (Parker, 1996)

and a single Byzantine gold coin, this wasminted under Heraclius, a type datable to638-641 A.D. (Whitcomb, 1993).

A later report on Aila comes from the Pi-acenza pilgrim (c. 578 A.D), who is gener-ally known as Antoninus or Pseudo-Antoninus. On his tour of biblical and culticsites in the Holy Land, he traveled fromSinai to Egypt via Clysma. He mentions ahearsay report concerning Aila, which hestates receives ships coming from Indiawith a variety of spices “Then a ship sailedinto Aila from India with various perfumes"(Simon, 1989; Mayerson, 1993; Fiema, 1991).This indicates that the port of Aila still hasbeen active in trading during the 6th century.These clarify by participation of Aila in theEastern maritime trade during 6th century.For example, among 60 ships supplied forthe expedition of Ela Asbeha against DuhNuwas of Himyar, 20 from Clysma, 7 fromIotabe, 2 from Berenike, 7 from Farasan, 9from India, 15 came from Aila (Fiema, 1991;Vasiliev, 1950). This information has beenused to figure out the important of port ofAila, it is indeed clear that Aila and Clysmamust be considered the most importantones, since they provided the Axumitearmy with the biggest amount of vassals.Also this economic aspect of life in Aila isfurther reflected by the terms of the capitu-lation of that city to Mohammed in (630A.D.). The Islamic historian Al- Waqidimentioned that Dumat al-Jandal (al-Jawf),Ayla and Tayma had become afraid of theprophet when they saw that the nomadshad embraced Islam (Fiema, 1991). Mo-hammed guaranteed the safety of the peo-ple of Aila and their ships “… this is aguarantee from God and Mohammed theprophet, the apostle of God to Yuhanna ibnRu’ba and the people of Ayla for their ships andtheir caravans by land and sea…” (IbnHisham,1955; Zayadine,1994). There wereYemeni traders in Aila at the time of its sur-render to Mohammed: Yemeni and local in-habitants alike were granted freedom totravel by both land and sea (Crone, 1987).

At the same time the treaty secured freepassage to the Muslim troops in territory ofAila. As early as 634, they penetrated intoWadi ‘Arabeh and defeated the Byzantinearmy at Dathin, near Gaza and at Ajnadayn.Thus the way was open for the Arab Mus-lims to put an end to Byzantine rule in Syriain 636-638A.D after the Battle of Yarmuk(Zayadine, 1994).

5. CONCLUSION

It is worth mentioning that Aila playedan important major economic role duringthe Nabataeans, Roman and Byzantine pe-riods. Large quantities of imparted goods,including fine ware pottery and amphoraefrom the Mediterranean, glass from the Lev-ant and Egypt, and exotic stone suggest thatAila was a thriving center of commerce inByzantine period.

The ancient authors make it clear thatAila was an important point of transship-ment in the lucrative aromatics trade, whichmust have generated a great deal of revenuefor its inhabitants.

In antiquity Aila was a very importantrout of trade and cultural connections, andwas important as the interior trade routeconnecting Arabia with the Mediterranean,in the Nabataeans Roman – Trade. WithAila, Clysma and Iotaba identified as theprinciple entrpots of Byzantine maritimecommerce in the Res Sea.

International commerce via the Red Seain general and the Gulf of Aila in particularremained a high priority to the imperialgovernment. It is seems that the port of Ailastill prosperity during the 6th century untillate Islamic Period, as revealed by excava-tions conducted many where in Aila.
