Includes: Global Warming

One Environmental ConcernGlobal Warming:

Global warming is believed to be the most dangerous thing to happen in our history. Some believe global warming is actually occurring but others

believe it is nonsense. Scientists in this book believe that heat increases to a point

and then cold air emerges. They think a storm is with these changes and that this has

happened in the past and will happen again. Also because greenhouse gases, a fierce warming is on the move. Scientists also say that global warming is harming oceans as well

as land.

Includes: temperatures, sea life, currents, underwater land formations, and sea levels and how they are being effected by

global warming

Ocean TemperaturesOcean temperatures are being effected by global

warming by:Increasing water temperatures

From 1961 to 2003, the global ocean temperature has risen by 0.10°C from the surface to a depth of 700 m.

Not only does it effect the environment (ex. by melting sea ice, affecting corals, sea life, etc), warming reduces the ocean's ability to absorb CO2.

In this presentation, we will explain how the rise in ocean temperatures is harming sea life, ocean currents, ocean land formations, and sea levels.

Ocean Temperature

shows the ocean and land temperatures

increasing throughout the years.

Sea LifeSea life is being effected by global warming by:

Many species and sea life are becoming extinct or at least being put on the list of endangered species. This is because of ocean temperatures rising. Sea life is unable to

live in these such high temperatures and during these sudden changes.

Many of the species at risk are Arctic and Antarctic animals such as polar bears and emperor penguins.

Many corals and fish are also being harmed because of ocean temperatures rising.

Ocean CurrentsOcean currents are being effected by global warming by:

Some scientists believe ocean currents help global warming but others say currents do nothing to about it. "The Atlantic circulation moves heat toward the Arctic, and this helps

moderate wintertime temperatures in the high-latitude Northern Hemisphere," said Ruth Curry, a physical oceanography research specialist. However other scientists disagree.

Curry noted that excessive amounts of freshwater dumped into the North Atlantic could alter seawater density and, in time, affect the flow of the North Atlantic ocean current. However this will take about a century at present rate

Currents work like a conveyor belt. The current transports warm, surface waters toward the Poles and cold, deep waters toward the Equator.

currents.

red- warm currents

In the Atlantic Ocean, warm surface waters push northward, releasing heat into the atmosphere and becoming cooler and denser. As they do, the waters sink and flow southward in the deep ocean.

Underwater Land FormationsUnderwater land formations are being effected by global

warming by:Melting and effecting glaciers

Glaciers basically grew during a cool period from about 1550 to 1850 known as the Little Ice Age. afterward, until about 1940, glaciers around the world disappeared as the climate warmed.

Excluding the ice caps and ice sheets of the Arctic and Antarctic, the total surface area of glaciers worldwide has decreased by 50% since the end of the 19th century due to global warming.

The loss of glaciers not only causes landslides, floods and lake overflow, but also increases annual differences in water flows in rivers.

Sea LevelsSea levels are being affected by global warming by:

Global warming melting part of glaciers or countries which raises sea levels

With increasing average global temperature, the water in the oceans expands in volume, and additional water enters them which had previously been located up on land in glaciers ex:) most of low-lying Louisiana will eventually be underwater if

this melting continues

Sea Level Graph

This graph shows how the sea level is rising throughout the years due to global warming.
