What is the folktale?

Folktales are stories orally transmitted and passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation. The first and most important function of folktales is to entertain. While being entertained, listeners will certainly absorb these most valuable lessons inherent in the tales as they are that also serve as the “repository of history, language, culture and values, and their spiritual functions.” Wajuppa Tossa, Telling Tales from Asia, APECEIU, 2010.

The folktale is the tale of the folk or ordinary people.
