Today KEM has nearly 50 employees with equipment ranging from 3D Laser Scanners to Roboc Total Staons and trucks equipped with cameras that televise underground pipes. Ken would be astonished at the technological advancements in our industry and proud that KEM is on the cung-edge of that technology. So there you have it, a lot of history in a few paragraphs. And while it’s not possible to tell the full story in this brief narrave, we hope it provides you with a beer understanding of how KEM operates and why we work so hard to maintain an unmatched standard of quality. Butler Village Engineer Celebrates 40 Years in Business

March, 2018 marks 40 years of service for the civil engineering firm K.E. McCartney & Associates (KEM). The cornerstone of KEM’s foundation was set in April, 1951 when company founder Kenneth E. McCartney entered the Army during the Korean War. While in Korea, Ken learned the value of clear communication, how to find innovative solutions in a timely manner, and that quality infrastructure is

paramount to success. He completed his tour in 1953 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. In 1956 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, setting in motion an economic golden age for the civil engineering industry. Jobs were abundant for young engineers, and Ken joined Porter, Urquhart, McCreary & O’Brien working on a leg of Interstate Route 71 through Richland and Ashland Counties. The 15-mile corridor Ken worked on proved to be very challenging due to significant grade changes; one area required a 100-foot cut through rock. After the

interstate highway system was complete, Ken joined the Mansfield firm Shaffer/Parrett, where he met Barney Parrett. The two went on to become very close friends and eventually opened Parrett/McCartney.

In 1968, a group of gifted engineers joined in partnership to form Richland Engineering Limited, with Ken as Managing Partner. It’s often said that destiny’s in charge and we’re just along for the ride, a compelling thought considering that in 1978 Ken took his experience and expertise, along with a considerable amount of grit, and established KEM.

From the beginning, Ken set out to build a different kind of engineering firm, one that cares about the communities it works for and considers the impact to our environment when planning improvements. Ken instilled these values in the company until his passing on April 2nd, 1994. Since that time, the KEM family, including Ken’s children, dedicated staff, and now several grandchildren, has carried the company torch, all the while holding true to the lessons Ken learned so many years ago on the battlefields of Korea: provide clear communication, find innovative solutions, and work efficiently.

Today KEM has nearly 50 employees with equipment ranging from 3D Laser Scanners to Robotic Total Stations and trucks equipped with cameras that televise underground pipes. Ken would be astonished at the technological advancements in our industry and proud that KEM is on the cutting-edge of that technology. So there you have it, a lot of history in a few paragraphs. And while it’s

not possible to tell the full story in this brief narrative, we hope it provides you with a better understanding of how KEM operates and why we work so hard to maintain an unmatched standard of quality. It’s really very simple; Ken would expect it, and the Village of Butler deserves nothing less.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Butler Branch Library Project

The Mansfield/Richland County Public Library is pleased to share plans to brighten up the Butler Branch Library. When I started as Library Director in June of last year, we took a look at each of our nine locations and saw need for some work at the Butler Branch Library.

The project is set to start on Monday, April 2 and is scheduled through Friday, April 14, though it is possible it will be finished sooner.

What can the Butler community expect to see from this project? A more welcoming branch library! The entrance will have new walk-off carpeting rather than tile, which will be great for

those snowy and rainy days. This will transition into a nice patterned carpet inside the library. The walls and columns will be painted in an effort to further give the library and clean and brighter look. New computer seating will also be available.

The project continues downstairs as the steps will be carpeted and the lower level will be refinished. The Butler Branch Community Room will be re-carpeted and painted. New tables will be available for both library and community events.

We hope you will visit your Butler Branch Library once this project is completed!

BUTLER LIONESS NEWS MARCH 5, 2018 MEETING RECAPPED

We had a great turnout from our neighboring Lions and Lioness clubs when we hosted the March Guest Night and Auction. The tables were filled with delicious soups,

sandwiches and desserts. Where else can you get veggie pizza, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken sandwiches and subs as a main entrée, along with five different soups. The desserts not only looked delicious – they were! Thanks to all the Lioness who out-did themselves preparing the meal.

After dinner Lioness Peggy with help from the

Lioness ladies began the annual auction. We had baked goods, quilts, a variety of theme baskets and many other items to auction off and with Peggy’s great auctioneer abilities we had lots of fun! And we earned the club some additional funds to help out our community.

Peggy was in great form working from her wheelchair. It was exciting to see her back at a meeting! Thanks!

The fun she generated was invigorating and made the bidding exciting! Treasurer Patsy, President Donna and Secretary Mary Lee enjoyed the bidding process!

HOPE

Last year, I wrote about a time in my life where I challenged God to show Himself to me for real, or I was walking away from Him forever. He has done that for me, and so much more. Fast-forward to today, since last year, I have had to face many personal challenges. In addition, as one who lives alone, I have way too much time to think about far too much. Were it not for my Lord, I fear where those thoughts could take me. This feeling of isolation, of being invisible, of not fitting in - it plagues me lately (again).

This Sunday, we who love the Lord will remember our Lord’s resurrection. My own struggles have brought to mind the rejection Jesus suffered, prior to his murder. He was often treated poorly by the religious elite, and others. By today’s standards, such treatment would be considered bullying, emotional abuse, and downright murder. Who would stand up for him, if he was with us today, in human form? I fear, not very many.

His strength, in facing His own murder, amazes me. My issues, in comparison to what he suffered, are minor. I am ashamed to admit that right now, I can barely find the want-to, to keep going. Yet, I throw aside my pride, and I write this here, knowing there may be others reading this who are struggling as I am. I want to assure you that I have found true comfort and strength only from Jesus.

I think about how others keep going who don’t trust in the Lord. Alcohol? Drugs? Other destructive behaviors? If Jesus was not Lord of my life, I am pretty sure that I would have fallen into some of those same destructive behaviors, things from which I

might never have escaped. But Jesus saved me from myself.

I wonder who comforted Him in his hour of need? No one but the Father. Yet he is here, with me and for me, holding me up while I am weak and world weary. This trial is too overwhelming to handle on my own, but I know that it will pass, because he’s with me, guiding me through it to calmer waters as he has always done for me.

I ponder the fear, the agony, the terror he must have felt, in that last hour of his life. His sweat contained blood, according to the Bible. That’s some pretty serious terror. He asked God if there was any way the thing he was about to face could be avoided, yet he knew there wasn’t. He could have refused to do it, but for us, he willingly faced His own murder. He knew humanity would have no hope of escape from hell itself, without the sacrifice he was about to make. So he died for all of us, for someone like me who needs Him, who desires His presence, His comfort, and for those who would accept that he is the only way to be saved from destruction and be reconciled to our heavenly Father.

For His sacrifice, I will love Him forever. Without Him, my life would spiral into a pit of despair from which I might not recover.

Jesus is my only hope, my strength, my refuge, the solid rock on which I stand. He is those things for anyone who can believe that he is truly the risen Son of God.
