In such a scenario, we cannot put pressure on the marketing team to get stude nts for 240 seats. W e will not lower the standard just to fill the seats. Hence, we brought do wn the number of seats, ” said Ritesh Hada, Managi ng Director, UWB. The number of students has come down 25 per cent this year. UWB had recently increased its admission fee f or MBA from Rs 4.75 lakh last year to Rs 5 lakh th is year. Many B-schools across the country are also feeling the pinch. A B-school in the National Capital Region has not only lowered its fee by Rs 25,000 but is also planning to r educe the number of seats. Industry players say it could be a tough admi ssion season for B-schools this year. Admissions will get over by mid-June. “The admission season does not look very promising this year, too. Thanks to the not-so-imp ressive placements and economic growth, it will be difficult to convince students to join a B-school. Except the top ones, others are in for diff icult times, ” said H Chaturvedi, Director, Birla Institute of Management Technology, Greater Noida. However , B-schools are making all efforts for a decent admission season by approaching MBA coaching institutes, distributing pamphlets and roping in admission agents. “B-schools resort to a ll kinds of inducemen ts. We have warned students about them. We hav e our own l ist of good B-schools, which we have prepared on the basis of their faculty and placement track record, and we recommend our students only those schools,” said Sai Kumar Swamy , Director, Triumphant Institute of Ma nagement Educa tion, Delhi. Last year, of 45,7 00 MBA seats available in Maharashtra, only 12,800 were filled. This resulted in many B-schools converting mi nority quota seats into general category seats. For the first time in t he last three yea rs, the number of new management and engineering and technology institutes opening has come down by half. In FY’12, 892 new management and engineering and technology institutes were opened in India, and 626 new institutions were set up in FY’13.     B-schools reduce seats,cut fees to attract students

    With management courses falling out of flavour, Ahmedabad-based United WorldSchool of Business (UWB) has brought down the number of seats for MBA from240 to 180 this year.

    Students do not want to get into management education. In such a scenario, wecannot put pressure on the marketing team to get students for 240 seats. We willnot lower the standard just to fill the seats. Hence, we brought down the numberof seats, said Ritesh Hada, Managing Director, UWB.

    The number of students has come down 25 per cent this year. UWB had recentlyincreased its admission fee for MBA from Rs 4.75 lakh last year to Rs 5 lakh thisyear.

    Many B-schools across the country are also feeling the pinch. A B-school in theNational Capital Region has not only lowered its fee by Rs 25,000 but is alsoplanning to reduce the number of seats.

    For the first time in the last three years, the number of new management andengineering and technology institutes opening has come down by half.

    In FY12, 892 new management and engineering and technology institutes wereopened in India, and 626 new institutions were set up in FY13. In FY14, only 494new institutes have so far sought permission from the All India Council forTechnical Education.

Projectpreparations were in full swing.Following this were themid-semester exams.An awareness campaign

    conducted by the college educatedthe students about the electionsand motivated them to cast theirprecious vote.Endeavour conducted a seminaron effective communication andteam. The seminar taught thestudents how to build a goodteam, how to work in a team, etc.

    B-Schools and Competition: Bitter vs. Better

    "Competition brings out the best in products and the worst in people." - David Sarnoff,Pioneer of American Commercial Radio and TV.Rightly said! It is tacit knowledge, if success is the dream a B-school fosters, competition orrather the spirit of competition keeps the dream going on. No matter how accommodatingand affable one may be; no matter in what way group activities instill the spirit of 'oneteam one goal', competition by far compels almost everyone to work for short term goals,mostly articulated as grades. And no matter how ever one may be calm and collected,competition at a B-school for most becomes overwhelming!

    This, however, doesn't have to go on like this for all of us. Two years are also anopportunity to make friends, experiment, learn and grow as a human being. These twoyears come with an opportunity to learn 'self-discipline'. A night's coffee with youracademic arch rival can do more good than beating him the next day by one or two marks.Management is not always about being the best, it is about the journey chosen to becomethe best that differentiates between excellence and temporal achievements. By choosing tolearn, share and grow, a student can break through the manacles of mediocrity in goalsetting. Excellence is not always quantifiable in terms of grade points; it can only begraded through lifetimes. And often greatest of business leaders have admitted that theywere best of friends with their so-called competitors. It is said that jealousy is love incompetition, but in reality competing with others makes one bitter while competing with

    oneself makes one better. Competition is necessary but its evils are not. So if you haven'tdone the following probably you haven't tasted the real flavour of competition at aB-School: Help a batch mate with a subject Go partying Experiment Write an exam without studying the 'ideal way' Develop a hobby (an entirely new one) Laugh at yourself (very often) Be brave enough and admit you're far from being the best, grow each day Go on an adventure trip Read fiction and never give up imagining and being childlike Smile in the face of defeat
