  • It was great to see so many members and friends at the 103rd Annual Meeting and Gala. With almost 370 in attendance, it was an outstanding opportunity to recognize the Chamber's many volunteers that have ac-complished so much over the year. Many people do not realize how much of a team effort is required and how many volunteer hours are necessary to complete all of the Chamber's programs. Every day, our members, volunteers and staff are making a positive difference in the community. I was very blessed to meet and learn from so many great people in our com-munity this year, and I thank everyone for their time and talents.

We began 2010 with the theme "Vision, Value and Teamwork." Specific goals were developed, and all stayed focused on meeting the goals and needs of our members. A few highlights include:

In Education and Workforce Development, 57 Youth Leadership Hall and 29 Leadership Hall participants graduated and learned more about key aspects of the community. If these participants are any indication, the future of our community is in great hands.

The South Hall Business Coalition took great strides in reaching out to the South Hall area with new programs including a roundtable discussion among the area city managers. Membership Development created more networking opportunities for our members and achieved well over 100 new members during the membership campaign alone. Marketing and Communications launched a new website that is user-friendly and provides members with program information in an easy to search format. You can also follow the Chamber through several social media channels. Community Development, through the Healthcare Committee, had over 1,200 runners and walkers and a record number of attendees at the 4th Annual Get Fit Stay Fit 5K Corporate Challenge. They also held another very successful HealthSmart Expo promoting healthy lifestyles through health screening and health information resources from local healthcare businesses. VISION 2030 established committees for greenspace, comprehensive land use, harbor town, Senior Leadership Hall and others. A strategic leadership visit to Cary, NC is also planned for June. In Economic Development, ZF Group was one of the winners of the local industry of the year awards and went on to be selected as one of the winners of the Georgia Manufacturer of the Year Awards. Many other new industrial and retail announcements were made over the past year as new and expand-ing industries created new jobs and retail owners opened new restaurants, grocery stores, clothing and household goods stores and others.

All of these accomplishments would not be possible without great teamwork from all of you, our mem-bers, volunteers and staff. Thank you for your outstanding commitment to the Greater Hall Area. It is my pleasure to welcome our incoming Chairman and our first 3rd generation Chairman of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, Jay Jacobs. Jay's grandfather served as Chairman in 1928 and his father as Chairman in 1956 and 1970. Jay will do an outstanding job and develop many new ideas.

A special thanks again to all of our award winners and to everyone who has played a role in helping the community remain a great place to live, work, play and raise a family.

Job Fair: For Employers and Job HuntersThe upcoming Job Fair & Career Expo on June 22 (10am - 2pm) has advantages for both job seekers and companies. Employers will have a chance to fill openings faster because managers can meet hundreds of job candidates face-to-face during a short period of time. Hiring managers can better spot talent that they might have missed otherwise, and the companies get a publicity boost during uncertain economic times. Companies will have the chance to spread good news about their business. Employer booths ($200) are still available for the event.

For people looking for work, the job fair and career expo provide coveted face-time and personal contact with hiring managers. Job hunters have the opportunity drive home points that aren't in the application and, potentially, elevate their application to the top of the pile. The Georgia Department of Labor will be on hand to assist job seekers with complimentary resume reviews and writing tips, and ZF Wind Power will be interviewing prospective employees during the Job Fair & Career Expo.

The 2011 Job Fair & Career Expo is free and open to the public. Details: Jean McCullough, 770-532-6206. Email: [email protected]. Register online: greaterhallchamber.com

The Ambassador of the Year Award was presented to Megan Martin, American Security Shred-ding. Megan was chosen by fellow members of the Ambas-sadors Council in recognition of her ongoing service and involvement with Chamber membership projects, programs and activities. (L-R): Nick and Megan Martin, and parents David and Melissa Stewart.

    Ambassador of the Year

Small Business of the Year: Rushton & CompanyRushton & Company, a Commerce Club Member and Chamber supporter for over 25 years, has grown into one of Northeast Georgias largest and most respected accounting firms. Initially a one-man company, the agency was founded by Barclay Rushton in 1981 and housed in a tiny office on Green Street in Gainesville. It grew steadily through those early years, then began to take off in 2005 with an aggressive growth strategy.

The recent recession has impacted Rushton & Company, just as it has many of its clients and the local business community. The firm has been especially sensitive to focusing its talents and expertise toward helping local and regional businesses navigate through the troubled economy in areas ranging from business planning to debt restructuring. While putting clients first and helping them through difficult times, the company has witnessed increased demand for its business counseling and accounting services while helping scores of area companies survive and even prosper in the face of adversity. Consequently, Rushton & Company has been rewarded with its own success growing to 29 employees with an average annual growth rate of 12 percent over the last six years. Rushton & Company celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

Firm partners Barclay Rushton, Chris Hollifield and Perry Barnett lead and set an example for community service that is followed by their staff. The firm holds special in-house seminars designed to teach employees to be better community service citizens and exposes them to opportunities to get more involved in civic service. From local schools, churches and civic clubs to youth sports and non-profit agencies, the Rushton firms community spirit and involvement have made a tremendous positive impact. The Rushton firm also serves as a Partner in Education with two Hall County schools: Sardis Elementary School and Wauka Mountain Elementary School. rushtonandcompany.com

Family Business of the Year: Milton Martin Toyota

Milton Martin began a used car dealership in 1961 in Downtown Gainesville on the corner of Green and Spring Streets. He founded his business on customer trust and began building relationships that would last generations with his "Satisfaction Guarantee" creed, a guarantee that became the backbone of his long-standing, community-oriented family business. In 1970, during a time when imported vehicles were not readily accepted, Milton followed his business instinct and purchased the Toyota franchise. Within two years, the dealership was relocated to Browns Bridge Road to accommodate growth and today is the oldest family-owned and operated Toyota dealership in Georgia, now celebrating it's 50th anniversary.

The cornerstone of Milton's success is continued through his sons and grandchildren. Brothers Mike and Ricky now own and operate the business and continue Milton's principles of honesty, integrity and customer satisfaction. The company remains a Christ-centered business with a focus on commitment to excellence and dedication to the community. Milton Martin Toyota is a business partner with the Gainesville Police Department and the Hall County Sheriff's Office sponsoring the Teen Driver Program free of charge to local teens and a camp for youth to promote Internet safety and the consequences of drug abuse. The family played an important part in the mission of Eagle Ranch, providing seed money to purchase the land and ongoing operational support in later years. Milton Martin Toyota is a legacy of service and encouragement to others and remains a vital community partner serving the children and youth of Gainesville-Hall County and those abroad with support of organiza-tions like Helping Hands Foreign Missions. The Martin team continues its mission and seeks to "not look at our own interests first, but to the interests of others with a humble attitude and always a word of encouragement." miltonmartintoyota.com

Rushton & Company received the 2010-2011Small Business of the Year Award atthe Greater Hall Chamber's Annual Meeting & Gala. (L-R): Partners Chris Hollifield, Barclay Rushton and Perry Barnett.

Milton Martin Toyota and the Martin Family was named the 2010-2011 Family Business of the Year. (L-R): Alan Martin, Mike Martin, Milton Martin, Ricky Martin, Tommy Martin and Melinda Foote.

Riverside Military Academy received the Community Service Award. River-side and the Greater Hall Chamber have been partners for decades and the Get Fit Stay Fit 5K Corporate Challenge, re-cently completing it's fourth year, would not be a success without the support of Riverside. The cadets and instructors provide team building programs for Leadership Hall and Youth Leadership Hall and open their doors and facilities to numerous others in the community. Riversides community service programs allow cadets to participate in a broad range of activities that make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Commerce Club MembersSkip Barber Racing School, the worlds foremost school for racing instruction, is moving its offices to Hall County from Connecticut. The office relocation joins the schools existing base location that has operated at Road Atlanta since 2008.

Skip Barber Racing Schools decision to raise its profile in Georgia will help boost tourism in the state and draw other automotive companies associated with racing, said Governor Nathan Deal. The Racing School has been a great partner in helping us promote Georgia, and we appreciate its interest in growing along with the state.

The companys Road Atlanta facilities are centrally located for our operations and the logistical demands placed on our company. Hall County provides excellent proximity to major airports and provides access to skilled professionals for employment, stated Kevin Seidl, Chief Operating Officer, Skip Barber Racing School. The Greater Hall Chamber's economic development team began working with this head office relocation in June 2009 and invited the Georgia Department of Economic Development to be a partner in the initial discussions with Skip Barber Racing executives.

Skip Barber Racing School at Road Atlanta is one of Georgias crown jewels in adventure tourism. This move brings us closer to the resources and talent of the worlds most renowned racing school. Its a boost to Hall County and Georgia to be the home of Skip Barber Racing School, said Kit Dunlap, President & CEO of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce.

Since 1975, Skip Barber has operated a fully integrated system of racing schools, driving schools, racing championships and corporate events across North America. skipbarber.com
