Olympic Presidential Baseball

OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Students will click on the correct picture of the President that corresponds with the

major events and Olympic event that occurred during that presidency.

He was the president that led the U.S. into World War I on April 2, 1917. He introduced his Fourteen points at the Treaty of Versailles, which in it contained

the establishment of a league of nations. This was rejected by congress. During his presidency there were no Olympic games due to the world war.

Woodrow Wilson Calvin Coolidge

He was president during the 1929 stock market crash which ushered in the Great Depression. Although he had plans to restructure finance and banking to get out of the depression, Congress rejected his ideas and made him a scapegoat for the depression. He was defeated for reelection

in 1932, the same year as the 1932 Olympic games in California.

Herbert HooverHarry Truman

The only president to serve four terms from 1932 to 1945. He enacted the New Deal which help get the US out of the Great Depression. He was president during World War II.

Although initially trying to remain neutral, after the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec 7, 1941 the US was forced into war with the Axis powers. He died in office April 12, 1945. He was president during the Olympic games in 1936 in Germany, but the next two were cancelled

due to the war,.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Franklin D. Roosevelt

President that ordered the dropping of the atomic bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima that ended the War in the Pacific in 1945. He witnessed the establishing of the United Nations

and NATO. He was president during the Korean War in 1950. He served as president during the 1948 Olympic games in London, England.

Harry Truman John F. Kennedy

This President was elected in 1956 and called for and enacted civil right legislation during his term. He launched the most federal programs since WWII, such as NASA and the Peace Corps. He was president during the height of the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was in office during the 1960 Olympic games in

Rome. Unfortunately he was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

John F. Kennedy Richard Nixon

Elected President in 1968. He was president during the first moon landing. He opened up trade with China. He signed the treaty which ended the Vietnam War in 1973. His presidency was marred by the Watergate scandal. Facing impeachment he retired in 1974. He witnessed

the Olympic games in Munich, Germany in 1970 and the tragic events of those games.

Gerald Ford Richard Nixon

This president elected in 1988 served during the ending of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was commander and chief during the first Iraq War in 1991. Despite

high popularity he lost reelection due to a failing economy and rising deficit. He witnessed the Olympic games of 1992 in Barcelona Spain.

George H. Bush Bill Clinton

This President saw more peace and economic well being than any other president in the 20 th century. He also saw the lowest unemployment and inflation rate in modern times. He served two terms. He saw falling crime

rates and a budget surplus during his terms. Personal problems led to his impeachment by the House of Representatives in 1998 but not that in the Senate. He was president during the 1996 Olympic games in Athens

and the games in Sidney, Australia in 2000.
