President’s Message
Changing With the TimesFrom technology to politics to finance…there is no doubt that things are chang-ing! One of the lessons of our times is that change has become part of survival and prosperity.
Things are no different at the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce. As things change around us, we are changing too.
This Chamber has changed with the times by developing diverse revenue streams that allow it to be healthy and continue to offer undiminished ser-vices even during the most challenging economic times. In fact, while many Chambers are suffering financially, the Burlingame Chamber is fiscally sound. Our partnerships, programs and events continue to thrive and grow. The Fresh Market has expanded from Sundays to a Thursday night market; the ArtzFest event just had a record-breaking year.
Our Chamber believes in Partnership. Through partnerships we are able to deliver tangible results and benefits to our membership. We partner with the City, with emphasis on economic development. We partner with our busi-ness districts in marketing efforts. We conduct Concierges’ Tours to help keep visitors coming to our city. We partner with other chambers to offer expanded networking opportunities, educational seminars, leadership programs and leg-islative information. Our partnership with the Burlingame Community for Education shows our support for our future business and community leaders. City, County and State business and government leaders and officials ask the Chamber to partner on important issues which affect us at all levels.
It’s been said that the Burlingame Chamber is the envy of the Peninsula. Such praise could only come to a Chamber with the quality of members that we have in Burlingame. This is an organization that would not exist without its members and we are dedicated to work harder than ever on their behalf. Our mission is long term; our investments in our membership and community are deliberate and meaningful insuring a return to our City. We know we will be here to help future generations.
Our board of directors reflects the wonderful variety that constitutes Burlingame business. From international hotel brands to financial institutions that are national in scope to vital, local retail and services, this board under-stands what it means to do business here. We are proud and honored to have their service.
We hope that you will join the hundreds of businesses that make up the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce to support our efforts and help us continue our evolution. But even if you don’t invest, we know that you will be a recipient of the positive influence that this business association with its dedicated group gives to our community!
Georgette Naylor
The Burlingame Chamber of Commerce is an independent, non-profit, voluntary associa-tion of business people working to improve and invest in the city’s economic and civic vitality. The organization, which currently has approximately 500 members, is comprised of small businesses, retailers, hotels restaurants, non-profit organizations, educational and health institutions, major corporations, professionals and many other types of businesses.

Burlingame’s Charms: Swaying Trees, Whistling Trains, Tantalizing Scents
By Ro Logrippo
The scent of roasting cocoa beans . . .
The sound of whistling trains . . .
The sight of stately trees swaying over acres of picturesque property . . .
Welcome to scenic Burlingame, a charming city that is home to nearly 28,000 residents. Situated between San Francisco and the mid-Peninsula shoreline of San Francisco Bay, Burlingame proudly maintains a rich historic California character.
Classy Yet CozyThankfully the “City of Trees” is light years away in ambiance from nearby hectic San Francisco International Airport. What Burlingame sustains instead is an unhurried classy yet cozy lifestyle.
More than a century ago grand summer estates defined its 5 ½-square-miles. The lush acreage, punctuated with lavish mansions, was once a Spanish land grant. By the 1890s, wealthy San Franciscans owned the estates, an 18-mile carriage journey south of the bigger city. Reaching their destination consumed a full day along the slopes of the Pacific Coastal Range.
Today Burlingame and San Francisco are 20 minutes apart by car or train. Travelers also use BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) via its station in neighboring Millbrae.
With access to San Francisco so convenient, Burlingame might easily escape detec-tion by travelers. What puts it on their itinerary is often the desire to stay in a Bayside hotel from where they can view aircraft coming and going as well as the wetland home of egrets, pelicans and herons.
Fortunately for out-of-towners, it’s a quick 5- to 10-minute ride from local hotels to Burlingame’s lively downtown where myriad shops, restaurants and other sites await discovery.
As you enter the west side crossing Highway 101, tempting aromas waft from Guittard Chocolate Company. The 143-year-old firm takes pride in being the oldest family owned and operated chocolate company in the United States. It roasts cocoa beans from its Burlingame premises where the founder’s son moved the upscale fine chocolate firm from San Francisco in 1950.
Another welcoming beacon to the city’s west side is the marvelous Art Deco neon sign that is arched over Broadway. It sits across from the historic Broadway Train Station, a Mission style structure dating back to 1917.
A mile and a half south at 290 California Drive is the community’s key landmark, the larger main Burlingame Train Station. The first Mission Revival depot ever built, it opened in 1894, although its terra cotta roof tiles pre-date this. Initially, they topped California’s third largest Spanish mission built in 1771.
Directly west of the station is the mid-Peninsula’s unchallenged shopping and din-ing Mecca, an upscale four-block stretch of Burlingame Avenue. Hundreds of busi-nesses thrive here from classy one-of-a-kind boutiques to big name corporate stores. Merchandise includes everything from art and antiques to fashion and furnishings.
Think ethnic if you’re dining out. Fare ranges from Danish, Italian, Afghan and Mediterranean, to Mexican, Chinese, Japanese and American. Bistro tables front many food establishments, inviting patrons outside year round.
650.344.1735 www.burlingamechamber.org 5
Where Trees Are HeritageStylish shops and Bay front views aren’t all that endear locals. So do trees. The city boasts scores of heritage specimens.
Along its most famous thoroughfare, El Camino Real, rows of 137-year-old euca-lyptus hug each other on high. When they were planted, horses’ hooves and human footfalls were the only means of transportation.
Mature magnolia, maple, elm, sycamore, birch and oak also sway through town. In all, nearly 18,000 trees grace 63 acres of public areas, including nine parks. Countless more enrich 3,400 residential acres.
Several landmarks give visitors a brush with history. One treasure is “Three Dancing Maidens,” the bronze Wurlitzer Fountain that won the Great Gold Medal in the 1912 Munich Glass Palace Exposition in Brussels where it was purchased by Rudolph Wurlitzer of Wurlitzer Organ fame. His son, Raimund, moved it to Burlingame from his Ohio home in the 1950s. Its twin graces New York’s Central Park.
Burlingame’s JewelThe “jewel of Burlingame” to many is its main library at 480 Primrose Road. Mediterranean in style, the 80-year-old landmark was reconstructed in 1997 from an inadequate earthquake-damaged site to a $9.6 million state-of-the-art facility duplicat-ing or retaining original design elements. Dramatic newer features include a grand staircase with a tower of arches and columns.
Two-and-a-half miles from downtown is another imposing site -- Kohl Mansion, a 63-room brick Tudor built in 1914. Located at 2750 Adeline Drive, it features a 27- by 60-foot Great Hall where world-class performers give seasonal concerts. The Sisters of Mercy acquired the site in 1924 and seven years later opened Mercy High, a private girls’ school that still operates.
Not surprisingly, picturesque Burlingame was the setting for several movies through the years. Those filmed here include “Little Lord Fauntleroy,” a 1921 classic starring Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks; “The Right Stuff,” the Oscar-winning 1983 film about NASA’s space program, and “Flubber,” a 1997 comedy starring Robin Williams.
Fortunately, movie moguls altered nothing in the process of filming in Burlingame. The city is still as charming as ever, whether you call it home sweet home or a special stop on your Western travels.

Burlingame History
Anson BurlingameOnce part of a Spanish land grant given by Governor Pio Pico to repay a debt to his friend, Cayetano Arenas, and then the location of a San Francisco banker’s vision of a “sacrosanct colony,” Burlingame later became the site of the first country club in California — this is the distinct heri-tage of Burlingame.
During the 1860s, William C. Ralston, a prominent banker, and partner in the development of the Comstock Lode, purchased vast acreage on the Peninsula for a grand estate. He appreciated the Peninsula’s warm, tranquil set-ting of oak-clad, rolling hills nestled between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Coastal Range.
One of the first of many famous guests to his estate was the Honorable Anson Burlingame, who had recently been appointed by President Lincoln as United States Minister to China. Ralston showed his guest the portion of his estate set aside for the summer homes of his wealthy friends. So im-pressed was Burlingame with the locale that he chose a villa site of approximately 1,043 acres for himself, to be used after his retirement from the China mission.
The attractive name “Burlingame” was now on the property maps and in the news because of the “Burlingame Treaty” with China.
The Burlingame Country Club was founded in 1893 and a year later the Burlingame Post Office opened, making the name official.
As more and more people came to the area and rec-ognized its gentle charms, they chose to stay and soon Burlingame was a flourishing village. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake people continued to settle in Burlingame and by 1908 it became incorporated as a municipal corporation of the sixth class, “The Town of Burlingame,” later reclassified the City of Burlingame.

The Fresh MarketThe Fresh Market-Burlingame has be-come a favorite weekly Sunday morn-ing destination for City dwellers. One of the few community owned and operated markets in the Bay Area, it is located on Park Road starting at Burlingame Avenue.
The weekly market runs every Sunday morning from April through December, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is a certified market featuring California growers who deliver sea-sonal produce and flowers, includ-ing many organic items. There are also retail stalls presenting local food products.
Operated by the Chamber of Commerce, the market is known to have musical entertainment, a bal-loon man for the children and local artisans. Vendors boast that it is their favorite market and that the residents of Burlingame are the best!
Due to the success of The Fresh Market, the Chamber has opened a second seasonal market in the same location as the Sunday market. This market is on Thursdays from May through mid September, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Many Chamber members take advantage of “The Merchant at the Market” program, which allows local businesses to host their own booth. Chamber members are allowed one free booth space per season.
If you aren’t a Fresh Market regu-lar, put it in your weekly plans. Your recipes will be better for it!

ShoppingWe all have different shopping needs. There’s fun shopping, planned shopping, and necessity shopping. Burlingame is one of the fortunate communities in the Bay Area that has just about everything you need.
Burlingame Avenue has be-come one of the premier shop-ping districts in the area. From high-end specialty shops to small boutiques, you will ful-fill all your fashion desires here. Sprinkled among the shops are destination restaurants that ca-ter to every taste.
Broadway is a wonderful mix of traditional Burlingame business and dining. This is a place where locals like to hang-out, have a cup of coffee, hit a salon, do their banking and take care of the other items on their to-do lists. Easy parking, good family dining and some of the great bars in the City, Broadway is not to be missed.
Over the years, the Plaza has evolved to include more than just grocery and drug store stops. It also has some of the favorite breakfast and lunch restaurants in the area. There is also a sports bar and a range of great ethnic restaurants. Essential services and financial institutions make the Plaza a regular stop for Burlingame residents.

CoffeeFew places we visit evoke the vari-ety of senses and emotions as a fa-vorite coffee house.
With the aromas of brews from around the world and the plea-sure of hanging out with friends, Burlingame’s coffee houses are favorites for regulars and visitors alike. You’ll find students working on a laptop over mocha, a profes-sional networking over a sandwich and espresso, and Moms passing smoothies to delighted youngsters.
From early morning, the com-muters begin their day with a quick stop at their favorite shop on Burlingame Avenue, Broadway or the Plaza. Visit the same destina-tions in the evening and you’ll find them full of friends meeting for tea or coffee and discussing the day’s events.
Find your own brew and meet or make new friends at Burlingame’s fine coffee houses. It’s one of the best places around to enjoy the am-biance of our city while out shop-ping or on your way to dine or be entertained. Before you know it, you’ll be on a first name basis with the owner and staff and become one of the regulars.

Mills Canyon is a wildlife area within the City limits. Within the park is a hiking trail. The loop trail gives the walker a variety of views of the Canyon. Plant and animal species native to the Coastal Foothills live in the Canyon. The park is intended for limited recreation. Gateway to Burlingame The Peninsula’s newest hospital: earthquake safe, most advanced medical care
The new Mills-Peninsula Medical Center brings the most advanced medical care to San Mateo County in a safe, pa-tient- and family-centered healing environment.
Mills-Peninsula has for four years in a row been desig-nated as among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the United States for overall clinical quality by HealthGrades, the na-tion’s leading independent health care ratings organization.
The new six-story, 450,000 square-foot hospital is built to further enhance excellent medical care with technology and features that improve both safety and patient-friendly service.
The hospital is built using the most advanced earth-quake safety technology. Called base isolation, the system allows the building to withstand an 8.5 quake located in Burlingame and still remain functional.
In addition to the quake technology, patient safety also is the focus of everything within the hospital. The new rooms have been purposefully designed to provide a famil-iar, peaceful environment where patients and loved ones can feel safe, calm and comfortable.
All 241 beds are in private rooms, each with natural light from a window that faces outside the hospital or to an inner courtyard garden. Private rooms also make it possible to remove restrictions on visiting. Families and loved ones are welcome at any time, and sleeping accommodations are available in every room. Every nursing unit has a family kitchen and lounge.
For further safety and comfort, there is no recycled air. Instead, the hospital is ventilated with only outdoor air. This reduces the risk of infection and helps keep rooms smelling fresh.
For further convenience and comfort, patients can choose when they want showers and meals. Food is selected from a menu, cooked to order and served on request.
More key features include:• Electronic patient charting and internet-based
capabilities for advanced patient, physician, family communication
• State-of-the-art patient lift technology in all rooms
• An expanded Emergency Department that can accommodate 50,000 visits per year
• Ten new state-of-the-art operating rooms• Four meditation and healing gardens and
walking trails for patients, visitors, employees and neighbors
Visit www.millspeninsulanews.org for all the latest news, photos, videos and amazing features of the region’s newest hospital.

Quality EducationWelcome to Burlingame School District’s Educational Services. We are proud of the educational program we of-fer our students. They are challenged to excel in the core subject areas and engage in 21st century learning as well as participate in a variety of educational opportunities that address their creative interests, their physical development, and their social needs.
Our highly qualified teachers strive to ensure that all students meet or exceed the state’s adopted standards in English/language arts, mathematics, history/social science, and science. Individual students’ needs are met through the use of a variety of instructional strategies. The acquisition of skills, the application of knowledge to real life, and the ability to think critically are valued and provide the basis of a balanced curriculum and instruction for our students.
Parents and the community at large support our stu-dents through the Burlingame Community for Education (BCE) Foundation. Over the past 29 years, the BCE has raised more than $6 million private funds for District-wide initiatives, striving for enriched curriculum, small class sizes and quality instruction. Working in collaboration with the District, BCE-funded programs enable students to thrive academically and contribute to the overall excellence of the Burlingame public schools.
Additionally, the District ensures that students’ partic-ular academic needs are addressed through English Learner specialists, reading specialists, and special education ser-vices: special day classes, a resource specialist program, psy-chologists and speech therapists.
Test scores demonstrate that our students, as a whole, are succeeding. However, we continue to analyze assess-ment data to ensure that all of our students and subgroups are succeeding and receiving the supports they need. We make instructional decisions using the state’s Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) data; district performance based assessments in early literacy, writing, and mathemat-ics data; and daily classroom assessments based on students’ performance.
In Burlingame, we focus on not just what students are learning, but how and why they are learning. We believe that our students are most successful when they take re-sponsibility for their learning. We believe that our stu-dents’ learning is enhanced when it is connected to how they are a part of the school community, the community of Burlingame, and the community of humankind. Our students’ social and ethical development is paramount to their education in Burlingame. Students learn strategies to resolve conflicts, assist younger students in activities, and participate in school wide activities that give back to the community.

community’s feelings on actions and needs.• A Burlingame Business website with powerful tools including a local business search
engine, events calendar, and business, community and visitor information.• Seminars to enhance your business and leadership development programs to assure quality
leadership for the future.• Information supplied to you through Burlingame Business, News & Networking, broadcast

City of Burlingame
“The City of Burlingame is not only a great place to live, it is also a great place to own and operate your own business.”
The City of Burlingame is a suburban city of approxi-mately 28,000 people in San Mateo County, California, and is often referred to as the City of Trees. It is loca-ted on the San Francisco Peninsula and has a significant shoreline on San Francisco Bay. The city is named after Anson Burlingame who was an attorney and a diplomat who served as President Lincoln’s Ambassador to China. Burlingame was settled by wealthy San Franciscans look-ing for a better climate.
The City of Burlingame celebrated its centennial on June 6, 2008, and is a council-manager form of government. Our elected officials serve staggered 4-year terms. The city has five commissions: Beautification, Library Board, Parks & Recreation, Planning, and Traffic, Safety & Parking.
Burlingame is known for its high residential quality of life. Industrial growth was spurred in the 1960s and 1970s by proximity to the San Francisco International Airport. The City of Burlingame has over 13 beautiful hotels along the San Francisco Bayfront and is a significant vacation spot for people wishing to visit the San Francisco Bay Area. Burlingame offers some of the finest dining in the Bay Area, as well as first-class shopping.
Burlingame City Council:Left to Right: Ann Keighran, Mayor Terry Nagel, Cathy Baylock, Vice-Mayor Jerry Deal, Michael Brownrigg
The City of Burlingame is not only a great place to live, it is also a great place to own and operate your own business. From its shopping districts around Broadway and Burlingame Avenue and Burlingame Plaza on the north end, to the industrial areas along Rollins Road, office com-plexes on the east side and Burlingame’s Auto Row, the op-portunities for business owners abound. The City Council’s commitment to business is exemplified by the creation of a Economic Development Specialist position to help support new and existing businesses.
The Community Development Department is respon-sible for conducting both long-range and current plan-ning, plan checking, building permit issuance and field inspections of all buildings and structures in the City of Burlingame.
The Planning Division’s scope includes preparing and implementing the General Plan, administering the Zoning Code (Title 25), providing staff support for the Planning Commission, and relaying planning information to the public.
The Building Division enforces the minimum require-ments of the State Building Codes, State and Federal Laws, and Local Ordinances.
The City and Chamber of Commerce will be happy to provide all the information you need to start your own busi-ness in Burlingame.
