What is bullying?Bullying includes direct
and indirect acts of intimidation and
humiliation towards someone.
This includes physical acts such as hitting or shoving,
verbal threats, name calling, demanding things
or services, etc…
This includes rejection, humiliation,
manipulation, emails, written notes,
blackmailing, etc…
Boys and girls alike can be bullies. Boys tend to use physical acts of bullying,
while girls tend to use exclusion tactics and
rumors.
Schools have Zero-Tolerance policies to combat bullying.
Counselors also provide guidance lessons that teach
conflict-resolution and problem-solving techniques. Teachers
create positive atmospheres to discourage bullying.
Create open lines of communication so your child will
be able to talk with you when situations arise. Model
appropriate behaviors for handling anger and conflicts.
Avoid programs and games that encourage violent behaviors.
Conflicts are inevitable, but bullying should not be a normal occurrence in our
schools. With conflict-resolution skills and zero-tolerance policies, bullying
can be combated.
Bullies will discover beneficial ways of solving their problems. The victims will be empowered and won’t feel hopeless. Open lines of communication will be established between parents
and their children.
