DESCRIPTION

CALVARY UNPLUGGED: THE MEN OF JUDGES. For six weeks this summer we’ll gather in Woodward Hall for worship, to participate in a less formal holy time together. Our theme this year is the book of Judges—more specifically, the men of Judges! Six storytellers from our congregation will guide us. The book of Judges introduces us to some very interesting men, to say the least. And Calvary has many gifted and theologically trained members. So Unplugged is a perfect opportunity to hear from them in worship. Join us for riveting Biblical texts and talented storytellers, all summer long!

CALL TO WORSHIP Myra Houser

We believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ, who came to free the captives, heal the sick, and proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God. We believe in the story of God’s love, which is told to us by our ever creating God. We believe in a continually caring Christ, whose example encourages us to risk ourselves for the sake of the gospel. We believe in a continually healing Holy Spirit, whose power enables us to share the story of God’s love. We believe in a continually caring community called the Church, which physically lives out the story of God’s love. We believe in participating in the great calling we have—to live out the gospel in the world. Let us worship God!

PRAYER Myra Houser

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Myra Houser

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you.

HEBREW LESSON SUMMARY Judges, Chapters 6 – 8 Amy Sullivan

The Israelites were in a state of extreme impoverishment, hiding in the mountains, trying to avoid the Midianites. An angel of the Lord came to a guy named Gideon and told him that God would deliver the people, with him as leader. When an intense attack from the tribes in the East began, Gideon stepped up to lead. But he had his doubts about whether God really would help them win. So he asked God for a sign: he told God he would leave a piece of wool on the ground overnight. “If the wool is covered with dew and the ground is dry, I’ll believe you.” The next morning it was. But Gideon wasn’t convinced. He asked for the opposite, just to make sure, and the next morning the ground was wet but the wool was dry. So Gideon rallied the troops—32,000 men in total.

In a dramatic turn of events, God told Gideon to cull the troops. So Gideon sent a bunch of men home and eventually was left with only 300 men. He gave each one a jar and a torch, and instructed them to surround the enemy camp. When the trumpets blew, they smashed the jars and attacked. The onslaught scared the Midianites so much that they fled, and Israel recaptured the land.

GOSPEL LESSON Luke 11:1-13 John Appiah-Duffell

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God.

CALL TO PRAYER TAKE, O TAKE ME AS I AM

Take, O take me as I am; summon out what I shall be; set your seal upon my heart and live in me. (repeat)

PRAYER Jason Smith

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

GIVING AND SERVING

INVITATION John Appiah-Duffell

MUSICAL OFFERING COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING All join in singing the final verse. Calvary All-Come Choir and Congregation

O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.

DEDICATING OUR GIFTS TAKE MY GIFTS Listen as the Choir sings, then join in singing the repeat.

Take my gifts and let me love you, God who first of all loved me, gave me light and food and shelter, gave me life and set me free. Now because your love has touched me, I have love to give away. Take my gifts and let me love you, God who first of all loved me.

PRAYER John Appiah-Duffell

BECOMING DISCIPLES

INVITATION Amy Sullivan, Jason Smith

During the singing, we invite you to come forward if you wish to make a public commitment to Christ or to join our family of faith. If you are interested in membership or have questions about Calvary, please contact the Church Office.

SONG OF INVITATION I STAND AMAZED / ¡CUÁN GRANDE AMOR!

I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, and wonder how he could love me, a sinner, condemned, unclean. How marvelous! How wonderful! And my song shall ever be— How marvelous! How wonderful! Is my Savior’s love for me.

Que Cristo me haya salvado tan malo como yo fui Me deja maravillado, pues él se entregó por mí. ¡Cuán grande amor! ¡Oh grande amor! El de Cristo para mí. ¡Cuán grande amor! ¡Oh grande amor! Pues por él salvado fui.

WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS Jason Smith

We give thanks that you have been guided by the hand of God to this community of faith. We pledge to love each other and to work to grow into the fullness of Christ together. Amen.

BENEDICTION SONG MAKE US ONE

Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you. (repeat)
