Greve, June 30m 2002 Posted, July Sm 2002

Dear friends, members and readers, B- .:a -

Here your have a brand new edition of SWN in your hands packed with - as usual - lots of useful information for your listen- ing hobby. I hope, that you all will have a nice summer vacation, and that you will use some of the information in this issue if you are going to listening to radio during your holidays I’m sure, that you ten find something of interest. Let us then hear from you what you have heard!

This SWN is “a big one” with all sections included as you can see. Besides the normal sections, I also found space for the in- teresting lecture Anker held at Vejem, called “DX-ing in the Third World”. It is worth and interesting to read, though without sound tracks from the various radio stations Anker had.

Our Annual General Meeting at Vejers Beach went very well also this year, with 14 participants. You can mad the whole report in the last issue of SWN, and see what you missed by not partici- pating. Personal, I think that this place on the West coast of Jut- land, must be one of the best places in Denmark for DX-ing. We have never been disappointed what DX-ing concerns, just look in the last issue of SWN, what we heard.

Already now, we have decided the date for the next AGM and DX-Camp, which will be from May 16th to May 18th at the very same place as this year - Vejers Beach. I suggest, that you al- ready now, consider your participating. Detailed information will of course be published here later on.

Beginning with this issue, we have now decided just to have one deadline for each edition of SWN. The decision has been taken into the consideration, that most of our members now have ac- cess to Internet and e-mail. It is very few contributions that I re- ceive here at the hq by ordinary mail. Most of our contributors send in the logging& news etc. directly to the editor himself. If you don’t have access to e-mail, you can of course still send your contributions either directly to the various ediiors or to me. I’ll then will scan your items and send it by e-mail to the editor in- volved. By doing this, our deadline will be about one week shorter, that it is today. So, please let have this in your mind when sending us your contributions.

We have also updated page 2, so that correct prices for all our different services has been updated, so we ask you to read page 2 careful before you send money to us for e.g. membership fee or publications. Our treasurer stills urge you to send your pay- ment in cash either in EUR or USD. If you send your payment by a cheque, we’ll be charged a fee of EURO lo,-. Send your money in an envelope, property wrapped.

I’ll also like to draw your attention, that the WRH Company has issued a new radio book. Called SW Guide. Unfortunately I could not open the attached file wlth a picture of the front page of the book, but hope to do so next month. The book can be bought for a special price for DSWCI members of EUR 25,- plus postage EUR 4,-at Bernhard Hein, Germany. His address can be seen on page two below. Cash money will be preferred

With this I wish you all the very best of 73’s de

Attention! - Please Read this! After some months without an effective webmaster for the DSWCI homepage, our Swiss member Rotf Wemli has offered to get the page back on track. He has done that very quickly and you can check the page yourself on the new URL: www.dswci.org . Thank you very much for your assistance so far, Rolf!

For further development of our homepage, we still need an ex- perienced webmaster. Could you help us to set up a professional homepage? You do not have to be a board member or to live in Denmark. If you are interested, please contact our chairman Anker Petersen.

Laser Hot Hi: Traditional News now and Laser Hot His have shifted slightly LF to 9385 for their 3lmb outlet. I expect reports have been received long distance. The 31m outlet makes 4 !! in N. 6220 7465 3970 9385.

Radio Dublh Vintage pimte from obviously Dublin, have been silent amid controversial claims of non radio related problems. It is unknown if the station plans to return. During a visit to the station about 2 years ago, everything seemed a shadow of it’s former glory days, with their country format, and FM only service. They had the old Sunshine 539 MW transmitter tying in the yard, outside, I did mention SW to them, but they seemed to be uninterested. The following article appeared on Radiowaves.fm web site. Radio Dublin In Crisis Management at Radio Dubtin are at loggerheads over various issues whii have split the station apart, Radiowaves News has learned. A number of the presenters have resigned from the station and letters are being circulated which all contradict each other. It is unclear at present what future Radio Dublin has, if it has any. The station’s website has been stripped of all presenter pages and an update today simply states: “Radii Dublin am currently experiencing ‘non-technical difficulties”.

AUSTRALIA/TURKEY Today Fri June 14 12301 was listening a station with pretty decent Australian way of pronunciation without ID on 17830. Suddenly 1232, dominator of the frequency was the VOICE OF TURKEY (they were late) with programme in English beamed to Europe with 500 kW, thanks to PASSPORT. Suddenly under heavy co-channel QRM of VOT 1237, I managed to hear the ID of VOICE INTERNATIONAL broadcasting from DARWIN, Australia. Jouko Huuskonen FNL via DXLD

NETHERLAND ANTILLES Long-term DRM tests from Radio Netherlands Bonaire are continuing. The latest phase of the tests involves transmissions in simulcast (analog/digital) mode. 25 = AM Carrier Power kW. IO = Average DRM Power kW 0530-0700 11655 50 SEu 25 IO Dutch 0700-0800 15425 50 Seu 25 10 Dutch 2030-2125 15565 50 SEu 25 IO English 2130-2230 15520 50 Seu 25 IO English S 2230-2325 15520 50 SEu 25 IO Spanish S S = Simulcast Mode 4 10 kHz DRM + 5 kHz Analog The Simulcast frequency as specified is the center frequency of the DRM signal. This means the digital part ranges from 15515 to 15525 and the analogue part from 15525 to 15530. The analogue carrier is located at 15530, hence an analogue tuner should be tuned to 15530 in order to receive the signal. The synthesizer frequency for this Simulcast should be set to 15525. The Simulcast transmissions are expected to continue for about 2 weeks. After that, we will try to find a better time slot so it is more convenient for listeners in Europe to receive the signal. We would like to try to cover North America East for one hour as well. If it becomes apparent that we are interfering with other stations during Simulcast transmissions, the tests will be curtailed.

Afghanistan I am advised that a new station, Radio Khost, is operating on 1300 kHz with a power of 500 watts. On-air times are 1200-1400 and 1800-2000 (Kabul time) each day. All broadcasts are in Pashto. Khost is several hundred kilometres south of Kabul. I’ve not heard the station here, but a lucky DXer elsewhere might have success. Cyprus BBG Signs Agreement for New Middle East Radio Network Transmitter in Cyprus Washington, D.C., June 6, 2002 The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) signed an agreement Thursday with the Government of Cyprus for a new, medium wave (AM) transmitter that will give the Middle East Radio Network (MERN) broad reach in the region.“The transmitter will be a major component of MERN,” Governor Norman J.Pattiz, chairman of the BBG’s Mideast Committee, said after the agreement was signed in Nicosia, Cyprus by Averof Neophytu, Minister of Communications and Works, and Donald K. Bandler, the U.S. Ambassador. MERN, known as Radio Sawa (www.radiosawa.com) in the region, will reach Egypt and areas of the Levant once the 600 kilowatt transmitter is operational. The transmitter, located in southeastern Cyprus near Cape Greco, is expected to start carrying MERN in August 2002 on a frequency of 981 kilohertz. “The transmitter will help millions of people across the Middle East enjoy our network,” said Governor Tom Korologos, who was involved in negotiations for the transmitter. Medium wave transmitters in Kuwait (1540) and Rhodes, Greece (1260) already carry MERN, which went on the air March 23, 2002. An additional AM transmitter in Djibouti is expected to come on line within the next year. Alan Pennington Via BDXC

Czechoslovakia Radio Prague programming is now also carried within the CRo 6 - Svobodna Evropa network on 1071,1233 and 1287. Detailled schedule act. Michael Strassmann: Daily 1000-l 030 German, 1030-I 045 French, 1045-I 100 Spanish (instead for the whole 1030-I 100 period on Saturdays Spanish, on Sundays French), 1100-l 130 Russian, 1130-1200 English. The 1000 transmission is in fact the first airing of the daily German programme and not II shortwave where the 1000 slot contains just another replay of the previous days programme. During the recent years there were no longer any mediumwave transmissions of Radio Prague programming, namely the evening broadcasts on 1287 are history since this frequency was handed over to RFE back in 1990. Djibouti. AGREEMENT SIGNED FOR TRANSMISSION OF US ARABIC RADIO PROGRAMMES FROM DJIBOUTI j Text of report by Djibouti news agency ADI web site on 18 June Mr Rifki Abdoulkader Bamakhrama, the minister of communication and culture in charge of posts and telecommunications, who is also the government spokesman, and the US ambassador to Djibouti, Mr Donald Yamamoto, today signed an agreement on the setting up of radio relay stations financed by the USA. The agreement, which involves between seven and eight million dollars, allows for the installation of a mediumwave transmitter and a 5-kW FM transmitter at [state-owned] Radio-Television Djibouti’s (RTD) relay station at Arta [southern Djibouti]. The transmitters will relay Arabic-language radio programmes to the east African region and the Arabian Peninsula. A 2-kW FM transmitter will also be installed at RTD’s premises to relay Voice of America programmes in English, French and Arabic to listeners within Djibouti. Djibouti has granted the use of the 1431 kHz frequency for the mediumwave broadcasts, and the 100.8 and 100.2 MHz channels for the FM broadcasts. An official at the Ministry of Communication said: “Djibouti has become the centre for the transmission of radio and television broadcasts for the region.” The official said the department consequently had “signed a protocol agreement for the setting up of a 5-kW FM transmitter for [Paris- based] Radio Monte Carlo (RMC) Middle East for the transmission of Arabic-language programmes”. Georgia has a grave economic situation, and its continuing energy crisis, also affect broadcasting. The LW transmitter on 189khz is too expensive to operate daily and it is only used for special occasions which require nation wide coverage, such as every Monday at 0600 for the weekly address by president Edward Shevardnadze. On MW Georgian Radio ( “ Sakartvelos Radio “ in Georgian ) now only uses 1215khz regularly. This is a relatively low power TX at Dusheti, just 40 km north of Tiblisi. Even in the capital it suffers from co-channel QRM from Sari (Iran) in the hours of darkness. However, this outlet is frequently off air during power cuts, and this also applies to other TX’s, Therefore the relays of Voice of Hope and AWR were only short lived. The Tiblisi TX, listed for GR2 on 1044khz is now used by Radio lveria which belongs to the Georgian Orthodox Church. ( lveria is an’ ancient name for Georgia). The station is on air 24hrs a day and mainly broadcasts religious< cultural and educational programmes. The address is Radio lveria King Erekle Str. 1, 380005 Tiblisi. Also Abkhaz R.(1350), Adjarian R (693) and Southy Ossetian R (1323) were neither heard on their listed frequencies or elsewhere on MW. Many thanks for this to Maarten van Delft from Holland who has just returned home after a stay in Georgia

Germany Tonight Burg 1575 (Megaradio) booms in with local-like signal here, wiping out co-channel Italy completely. This is no doubt the new 500 kW transmitter. Since May 1st Radio Bremen carries on 936 no longer Funkhaus Europa but instead bremen 1. That’s indeed the official spelling of this network, which replaced a while ago both Hansawelle and Bremen 3. The FM outlets formerly used by the discontinued Bremen 3 now carries Funkhaus Europa, so936 was no longer the only Radio Bremen outlet for this program. Now the original situation on 936 was restored to some extent, but it remains to be seen if the new, since a Radio Bremen spokesperson stated a while ago that it would be an option to lease the mediumwave outlet to another broadcaster like Saarlandischer Rundfunk does for years now. (The 1422 transmitter is only leased by Deutschlandradio but still owned and operated by Saarlandischer Rundfunk.) The media authority at Magdeburg allocated the 261 frequency to Europe 1 and sells this license as one “for digital use”. Further down in the text the qualification “as soon as possible” is given, so 261 is to go digital when (if ever) DRM car radios are common on the market. The planned program is described as a full service program, aiming especially at car and truck drivers. Anyway this will be a new program, in German of course and to be produced within Sachsen-Anhalt, no relay of the French program from Paris. Via Kai Ludwig

Hungary. An alarming message from R. Budapest was received this Thursday: told their staff that from July, programmes in Serbian, Croatian, Slovak, Romanian and Ukrainian would be discontinued. This would represent a spending cut of 90 kiloeuros per year. Most of these program makers at RB only earn something like 250 Euro per month. Nothing said about other languages, so expect them to continue. (Frans Vossen, RVi Radio World June 16,

Ireland TEAMTALK STAFF VOTE ON STRIKE ACTION OVER JOB CUTS Dan Milmo, Wednesday June 12 2002, The Guardian Staff at Teamtalk, the sports news website and radio station, are threatening to black out the company’s World Cup coverage in a dispute over job cuts.Journalists have held a strike ballot and have earmarked June 21 as the first date for industrial action. The World Cup quarter finals kick off on that date and England face a possible clash with Brazil on June 22 if they overcome Denmark this weekend. The National Union of Journalists stepped in after Teamtalk executives announced plans to axe 75 staff from the 280- strong workforce. John Hogan, the father of the chapel at Teamtalk, said many staff on flexible contracts had been handed their P45s and given short notice periods. “It has not been generous at all and it has not given people time to sort out their futures elsewhere,” said Hogan. “There have been stacks of redundancies in internet sports journalism, so it will take them longer to get new jobs. “We have to be realistic - and we know the company is in trouble - but the packages on the table are disgraceful.” Hogan said he expected the strike to go ahead and the ballot results are expected over the next 24 hours. Teamtalk has 80 NUJ members out of an editorial staff of about 120. All are based at the company’s head office in Leeds. The job losses are part of a strategic review of the business, which is being taken over by online bookmaker UKBetting. Last year Teamtalk posted pre-tax losses of Af 15.3m on a turnover of f9.7m. Doubts are also surfacing over the future of radio station Teamtalk 252, which launched only three months ago on the frequency used previously by pop station Atlantic 252. Despite gaining about 400,000 listeners, Teamtalk 252 suffers from a weak long-wave signal and a lack of sports rights. Analysts doubt the station will be able to lure listeners away from the BBC’s Radio 5 Live or Kelvin MacKenzie’s TalkSport. Teamtalk executives were not available for comment. Rimantas Plelkys, head of R Baltic Waves told me that the Lithuanian Telecommunications Administration is in the process of talks with the Russian Administration to eliminate the harmful interference on 1386. The Russians will be forced to shut down their transmitter or go low power. The frequency is registered with the ITU as Lithuanian, and the transmitter in Skaisgiriai [Sovetsk] operates on this channel without a legal basis. Radio Baltic Waves International will broadcast from Sitkunai on 1386 with a non-directional antenna 0300-2000: 250 kW, 2000- 0300: 750 kW; Future plans are 1000 kW (1600 kW ERP).

Macedonia I’ve been trying to hear Macedonia on mediumwave for several years and finally successed yesterday evening - thanks no doubt to this new 1,200 kW transmitter, which the report failed to mention, is operating on 810 kHz. Radio Skopje was clearly audible here at 1930 UT tune-in on 810 kHz, with news in Macedonian. It was in the clear for several minutes before being lost under the co-channel Spanish station and BBC Radio Scotland, both of which were just starting to fade in. Looking at the sunset/sunrise charts for June, the best window for reception of Macedonia in southern England at the moment is likely to be early evening from approx 1800 until around 1930 UT when the Spanish co-channel interference starts to increase. North of the Midlands, reception is not going to be so easy unless you can null out R Scotland! Dave Kenny, Caversham, AOR7030+Welbrook KSAY amplified loops June 12, BDXC-UK via DXLD

2002, Vilnius-based Radio Baltic Waves international (RBWI) has been awarded with licence to broadcast on 1386 kHz medium wave with 32.1 dBkW (1622 kW) EIRP. At the time of this writing, final preparations are going ahead to launch a 750 kW nighttime (2000- 0300 UTC) station in Kaunas on 1386 kHz. Usage of this channel by any other station, including re-broadcasting of foreign radio programmes, is a violation of international broadcasting laws and a subject of legal prosecution. On-air tests of RBWI are undergoing to determine the station’s coverage and level of interference from Russian station in Kaliningrad area. Instead of having a 1000 kW transmitter allowed by the Geneva Plan, Russia operates 120012500 kW transmitter. Instead of having a non-directional single-mast antenna with 2.1 dB gain allowed by the Geneva Plan, Kaliningrad (Bolshakovo) station uses a SV4+4 type antenna, beamed to Western Europe (azimuth 275 degrees, 8-mast directional array with 12.7 dB gain), resulting in much greater radiated power (EIRP) than allowed by international agreements.

RLlRFE when sinking into my bed last night at about 2130 I just tuned into 1386 for a moment to check for the announced Sitkunai test: Yes, they did it with Radio Liberty in Russian (/I 7220). The signal was only mediocre, sounding like 70 or even less kW rather than the announced 700. Also the modulation was a bit low with a noticeable hum in the audio. I wonder which transmitter was actually used, this hardly sounded like a new high power unit.

RFElRL via Kaunas on MW 1386 kHz was heard as scheduled Monday evening at -20452130-. Bolshakovo had VOR until 2100 and then left the carrier on, obviously as “jamming”. Generally Bolshakovo was much stronger than Kaunas. One of the transmitters, apparently Kaunas, had a low frequency (50 Hz?) carrier instability. Via Olle Alm

I can add to Olle’s report that the Bolshakovo carrier was off when I tuned into 1386 at or shortly after 2130. At about 2135 the audio was cut but the hum continued. A couple of minutes later the audio was connected again, but then I finally turned the radio off since apparently no any other audio than the RL feed (i.e. announcements of any kind) was to expect. In Russia the reception situation appears to be different, with Lithuania comfortably dominating over Bolshakovo: a report from Moscow yesterday talks about a very good signal after 2100, only slightly worse than the local RFE/RL relay on 1044 kHz

There seemed no activity at all from Europe on 1386 last night (Wednesday) around 2145. But there was another signal fading in and out which was probably Labe, Guinea - the music was African style. I thought there was another carrier at one time but no other station appeared. Perhaps the reason for good reception of Lithuania in Russia is, that the Bolshakovo directional aerials only produce weak signals in the east? I think we can safely say that CRR2 are “annoyed”!!! Dear friends,

Thank you for all the contributions despite the beautiful sommer weather and the World Cup in Soccer (we call it football) !

In May Maarten van Delft was 12 days in Georgia and we have his report here. Maarten has by now visited some 250 radio stations in 90 different countries. That must be a world record ! Maarten also writes: “I like to get QSLs on the spot which never came by mail.... Though I listen a lot en route, I never send reception reports to any of these stations. I only try to QSL those I heard back home, because I feel that our hobby is about distance, not proximity.”

AFGHANISTAN R Afghanistan, Kabul is now back on shortwave for the Afghan population nationwide! It was active on SW with domestic and external services until about 1995 when the Taleban regime took over and established its replacement “Radio Voice of the Shari’ah ” (R Voice of the Islamic Law). This station was regularly heard on 7085~ until the U.S. bombing of the transmitter on 08 Ott 2001 at 1609. Foreign donors from the European Union, Japan and U.S.A. have provided studio facilities and advisers in Kabul, satellite transmission equipment and relay facilities in Kvitsey, Norway (500 kW) and Al Dhabbaya, United Arab Emirates (500 kW), hired by Merlin, UK.

After test transmissions on May 25-30, the schedule is now: 0100-0557 via Al Dhabbaya on 15240, and 1230-1727 via Kvirsay on 18940, all in Pashto and Dari.

In Denmark both broadcasts can be heard throughout, but 15240 is disturbed by co-channel R Australia in English. At 0200-0300 the programme “Good Morning Afghanistan” (English title) in is broadcast in Pashto 0200 and Dari 0230.

During the large and important Afghan Tribal Council (Loya Jirga) in Kabul, Jun 1 l-l 9 with more than 1600 participating tribal leaders who were electing a President (Mr. Hamid Karzai) and a temporary Parliament, R Afghanistan extended its broadcasts to the above mentioned schedule.

They opened with patriotic Afghan songs and then the usual programmes in Pashto and Dari, both with ID: “Radio Afghanistan, Kabul.” On the Hour there was in most cases a time signal, an announcement heard as “Soat Hastu Sitakesha”, an orchestral fanfare and then the ID above, followed by a long newscast read by two persons. Other programme items were political and other comments, Afghan folkmusic and some drama before an abrupt sign off.

Most interesting, however, was the live reports from the Loya Jirga which I heard on June 14 at 1357-1454 and on Jun 17 at

22 DSWCI Sh

1423-1445. It was possible to hear the engaged speeches in Dari mentioning Hamid Karzai and Loya Jirga, and in between low talk between the participants and the Chairman announcing the next speaker. These were historical broadcasts - nobody had thought this possible 8 months ago!

The Norwegian company NORKRING which owns the four 500 kW transmitters at Kvitsey and Sveio, decided to cut off some of the scheduled transmissions from R Norway and R Denmark during the extended broadcasts from R Afghanistan. Monitoring showed that the 15705 Kvitsay transmitter had been in use for R Afghanistan on 18940 from 1230 until abrupt sign off 1727:O0. The carrier came back on 17505 at 1730:30 and there was modulation at 1730:45. (Petersen)

This station has nothing to do with the Clandestines on 8700 (Information R) and 15480 (Voice of Afghanistan) which still can be heard. (Green & Petersen)

ARGENTINA 6214.97 New station R Baluarte, Puerto lgauzu where Argentine, Brazil and Paraguay meet. Heard regularly since May 10 from +2118 to 0223+ in Portuguese and Spanish with religious music & programmes from the Centro de Evangelizacion Camitio Nuevo during all broadcasts.

The name for its SW operations is “R Baluarte”, and the name for relayed 1610 MW is “R Maranatha”, this according to the station ID’s, “Acompaiiandote todo el dia, Cultura FM, Maranatha AM, desde Puerto Iguazu, Misiones, transmitiendo todo el dia, 24 horas en el aire para las 3 fronteras, Sudamerica” and “.....a traves de la Radio 101.7 la radio onda cotta Baluarte, 49, 6215 kilohertz y tambien Futuro aca la 101.7 Puerto Iguazu...“. Is very curious that its FM’s are called Cultura FM (Spanish ID) & Futuro (during Portuguese program). Also noted during listening, 96% programmes in Portuguese & 4% for Spanish announcements only.

According to phone talk May 28 with its operator, the station broadcasts on SW from *lOOO-0300* with 1 KW power. The correct address of the station is: Radio Baluarte; Hipolito Yrigoyen esquina Andresito; Casilla de Correo 45; 3370-Puerto Iguazu; Misiones; Argentina. Owner : Pastor Hugo Heidenger. 6145 SW Radio Africa, E-mail QSL’s in 19 weeks: “Dear SW enthusiast: Thank you for your E-mail. We have had a number of reports from around the world, Wales, Sweden, Australia, Austria, Ukraine amongst others, informing us of reception quality of our programs on the Short Wave. It is good to know that it is possible for you to get reception, especially as many people in the target area of Southern Africa are unable to get clear reception. We have heard stories from people travelling around the country that many people in one village will crowd around a single SW radio, with one person holding an aerial half way up a tree. For the large percentage of Zimbabweans, SW Radio Africa is the only source of independent news available. One of the problems with our service is that not a lot of people have SW radio sets in Zimbabwe. If anyone has suggestions on how we can get SW sets distributed there, we would be glad to hear from you. Also we would like to be able to tell people (not technically minded) struggling to get good reception how they can improve their sound quality without spending money. Owing to the fact that we are extremely unpopular with the Zimbabwean government, we do not advertise our address or the location of the beacon. But once again, many thanks for your interest. COLOMBIA 6064.5 Alcaldia de Puerto Lleras heard here. Telephone conversation with woman in a bookstore that was mentioned on the air suggests that the station on this frequency is a new project of an evangelical organization, not related to Colmundo which apparently sold the staticn, the equipment of which was moved to Puerto Lleras, Departamento del Meta. It also operates on 1530 MW, and there is licensed to the town’s mayor. WRTH 2002 says this is HJV82, Alcaldia de Puerto Lleras. Alcalde is the mayor. Alcaldia can be translated as “city hall” i.e. the mayor and the city/town government. (Rodriguez, Jun 10 via Conexion Digital, translated by Berg)

EAST TIMOR Timor is the largest and easternmost island of the Lesser Sunda Group of Indonesian islands. It is a hilly, tropical island with mountains up to 12,000 feet. The native Timorese population speak Tetum, but there is a Chinese minority who speak Hakka. In 1859 the colonial powers of Portugal and the Netherlands formally divided the 400 kilometers long island midway. The Dutch western half with capital Kupang became a part of Indonesia in 1950 at its independence. It has a population of about 450,000. The eastern half with a population of about 517,000 remained Portuguese until Nov 29, 1975 when the liberation party FRETELIN declared East Timor as an independent republic. Nine days later Indonesian troops invaded the country and kept it under a bloody occupation.

After increasing pressure from the rest of the world, in August 1999, Indonesia allowed a referendum to be held under U.N. control about independence which the people clearly wanted. After further bloody devastation by the Indonesian Army and militia groups, the UN. took over control of East Timor supported by Australian forces organized in UNTAET. Last year the East Timorians elected their first Parliament with 12 parties and last month they elected their first President, the guerrilla leader Xanana Gusmao. He was prisoned by Indonesia 1992-l 999.

On May 20 East Timor became a new, independent state declared at a ceremony the day before, lead by U.N.Secretary General Kofi Annan. It will be a new member of the U.N. in September this year. Today 98% of the population on East Timor are Roman Catholics. You can find details about East Timor on www.aov.east-timor.org Their new constitution includes a commitment to press freedom, so we may expect a new broadcasting authority to be created.

In the past years shortwave broadcasting on East Timor has been as follows, in chronological order, according to WRTH & the DSWCI TBS/DBS-files: 3268 Emissora de Radiodifusao de Timor Portugues, Dili, 1 kW,

0430-0600 100-1430 in Portuguese, Tetum and Hakka. Heard 1962-l 972.

3550 R Ramelan, Atambua, West Timor (Clandestine), 0900- 1500 in PortugueselBahasa lndonesia/Tetum and English, ID: “Radio Timor Liberdade”, on the air only Nov 23 1975- Apr 24 1976 during the Indonesian invasion. Since Jun 1976 the frequency was taken over by RRI Kupang which left its ordinary frequency of 3385 (10 kW). In Feb 1978 RRI Kupang returned to 3385.

9490 Abkhaz R, Sokhumi: R Sweden blocks 9490 more or less 0200-0600 or later throughout Georgia. This should also present rather unpleasant reception conditions in Abkhazia proper. Despite this QRM, I once noted Abkhazian programming being opened at 0615. During local afternoon (0800-I 300) nothing much is heard on 9490. In the evening (1300-1800) R Rossii relays come in very well, but during my many checks I did not hear any locally produced programmes in Abkhazian. (van Delft).

Comment to this: Beware, R Rossii itself uses a 100 kW transmitter of the Tbilisskaya site (more widely known as Krasnodar and Armavir) on 9490 between 1530 and 2100. The situation of both stations co-channel exists during the summer period for years now (in winter R Rossii is on 5895 instead) and there were already reports about R Abkhazia being wiped out by the upcoming Tbilisskaya carrier, proving that these are indeed different transmitters. To summarize the situation: R Abkhazia also relays R Rossii and states that it operates a 5 kW transmitter directly at Sukhumi (co-located and /I mediumwave 1350 I assume), but R Rossii during the evening on 9490 originates from a own transmitter and has nothing to do with Radio Abkhazia. (Ludwig in BC-DX Jun 6)

9490v: I just received a nice verification letter in Russian for my follow-up report from Sochinskaya GTRK by e-mail. Mr. V.K. Glazunov, the company vice chairman says: “We are very pleased that our programs can be heard by such far-away listeners. We confirm that such a program of R Sochi went on the air at the given time. Our transmissions go on the air on 71.93 MHz, but you received a relayed txion of our programme through the Abkhazian Republic Radio, which is situated in the town of Sukhum (Zvanba street 8) the capital of the autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, which belongs to the Republic of Georgia. For us it is a foreign state, and there isn’t any official agreement about co-operation with our Abkhazian colleagues. So we can’t officially confirm operation of our radio on the freq of 9490 kHz.” (Ritola via BC-DX May 15)

GREENLAND 3812 (USB) Radio Greenland - Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa (KNR) is back on short wave. The daily news programmes are carried with 100 W at 1330-1430 and 2000-2200 when DST is observed, and 1430-1530 and 2100-2300 when standard time is in use. The transmissions are unofficial, but are quite regularly heard - especially during Summer. Transmitter site is Tasiilaq on the Eastcoast of Greenland, and reports indicate that the transmissions can be monitored on the Westcoast of Greenland. “Real” short wave transmissions may start again in Greenland.

For some ten years the authorities have been considering closing down the current five 5-10 kW MW transmitters. Indications are that very few listen to the MW transmitters as all inhabited areas are now covered with FM transmissions and because audio quality is poor on most of the transmitters - in Greenland they utilize the same very narrow bandwith of 4.5 kHz as in Denmark. Besides, electricty is very expensive in Greenland. Calculations and considerations have been made to replace these five MW transmitters with one SW on the island of Cook, not far from Nuuk. That would be a more efficient way to serve the fishermen who are, more or less, the only ones still listening to AM. Cook Island was also the site of the old KNR SW transmitters using 3999, 5980 and 9575 several years ago. When, or if, a new official SW station comes into use again, a frequency in the 3-5 MHz range is likely.(Hartvig NielsenJunO6)

Tasiilaq is the largest town in East Greenland with a population of around 1700 inhabitants. It was formerly called Ammassalik, or in Danish: Angmagssalik. It is located on 65.35 North, 38.00 West. The town is beautifully situated in a fjord surrounded by high mountains. It has two FM-stations:

According to WRTH 2002 KNR broadcasts from Tasiilaq on 96.0 MHz FM with 50 watts. If any DX-er is lucky enough to hear this station, the address is: KNR, DK-3913 Tasiilaq, Greenland. However, that will be very difficult both on FM and SW. During the present Polar summer with sunshine 24 hours a day north of the Arctic Circle the propagation on 3.8 MHz with 100 watts is hardly more than within the local area! During mid day the band is not open here in Denmark, but I tried Jun 10 at 2000-2200 and nothing was audible on 3812. At that time the Maximum Usable Frequency towards Denmark is still around 16 MHz. The town is located so close to the Polar circle that today, Jun 19, Sunset is at 0129 and Sunrise two hours later at 0337. So much daylight is not favourable for transmissions on the low SW frequencies. In the old days KNR used to broadcast on SW within the ITU authorized bands, but this is in the amateurband outside the 75 meterband. It is also strange that it comes from a small town on the East coast, when KNR has its basis in Nuuk (Godthaab in Danish) on the West coast.

A private station is broadcasting in Tasiilaq on 93.0 MHz with 20 watts, according to Radio TV Handbogenlts address is Tasiilaq Tusaalaa, lttimiini 8.883, DK-3913 Tasiilaq, Greenland which wrongly is mentioned in WRTH 2002 as the KNR address. (Ed)

INVITATION The Finnish DX Association has the great pleasure of welcoming all Dxers, shortwave listeners, radio hobbyists and international broad- casters to attend the joint conference of the European DX Council an the Finnish DX Association. The conference will be held 15th to 18th August 2002 in the town of Pori, located on the west coast of Finland

Some of you may remember the DX conferences held in Finland in 1987 and1992. Those have been the biggest DX conferences ever ir Europe and they are also widely regarded as maybe the best ones. Our intention is to put up a similar conference providing a wide seleo tion of items covering Dxing on AM and FM, shortwave listening and international shortwave broadcasting. In 1987 and 1992 we reached an attendance of over 200 participants, and our goal this time is 150- 200.

The radio hobby will be the key topic of the conference. The agenda will cover sessions and panel discussions on hard-core AM and FM Dxing, international shortwave Dxing and shortwave broadcasting a$ well as other delivery techniques. Competitions and other entertain- ment will also be included. The venue is the Spa Hotel Yyteri situatec about 20 kms outside the town of Pori, and most items will take plaa in the hotel. Of course a visit to the YLE Radio Finland shortwave transmitter center only 15 kms away will be organised. The Spa Hote Yyteri is located on one of the most beautiful sand beaches of Finlarr offering an excellent forum for tourist activities for you and also for yo companion.

The conference will take place from Friday 15th of August till Sunday 18th of August. In addition there will be an option to participate on a trip to Tallinn, Estonia from Sunday 18th of August till Tuesday 20th c August. The trip to Tallinn includes a visit to Estonian Radio.

The conference www pages are available at http://www.sdxl.ora/ecixc/edxc2002.html. The price of the conference package is 65 euros including the welcome reception on Friday, the tour to YLE Radio Finland transmitters and the EDXC Banquet. Hotel price is 43 euros per person per night in a double room and 65 euros per night in a single room. If you wish to have a cheaper accommoda tion, there is a good camping site with huts only 300 metres from the hotel. More details are available in the www pages. We’ll be happy to answer your questions. Please use e-mail address edxc2002@sdxLorg.

DX-ing in the third World. Lecture by Anker Petersen given at the DSWCI DX-Camp in Vejers 03-05 May 2002. (Unfortunately the accompanying tape recordings cannot be brought here in SWN).

Introduction.

I have been listening to shortwaves for 45 years and my main interest has been CX-ing of home service stations in the tropical countries. These stations can often be heard here in Europe, if you know their frequencies and when to listen.

This DX-hobby has encouraged my interest in learning more about the countries of the stations, I could hear on shortwave.

I have also been travelling a lot around the world, in my job and on holidays and I have been in 55 countries so far.

About 15 years ago I began to visit exotic countries in all continents as a part of my DX-hobby, but also to learn more about the culture and nature of these countries which often can be classified as belonging to the Third World. Of course the local stations can be heard much better than in Europe.

I will cover 3 topics in this lecture:

1. My own listening when visiting these countries, 2. My contacts with local DX-ers. 3. My visits to local radiostations.

Mv own listening

When travelling overseas, you can choose between individual tours and group tours with a guide. On my DXpeditions, I prefer the individual tours, because they give me more freedom for the DX-hobby, but in some cases a group tour is the only possibility when you also want to see the countries as a tourist.

A good combination is to book an individual flight to the destination and there hire local tour guides. I have tried that with success in Mexico, Ecuador, New Zealand and on Aruba, Jamaica, Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago, Fiji and Hawaii.

Big hotels built of concrete should be avoided, because their construction and internal electrical noise reduces the signal quality on shortwave and mediumwave.

Whenever possible, I have rented a bungalow where a longwire can be stretched up in the trees outside.

DSWCI

On Fiji, I had no problems with the hotel gardener to put up an antenna from my rented bungalow there at the Coral Coast. I just said “Bula, Bula” which means “Hey” to him and smiled.

He smiled back and said “Bula, Bula” (See photo). I was extremely happy for that, because it also means “I will not EAT you today!“. A hundred years ago the Fijians were cannibals!

The portable receivers I have been using are an ESKA RX33, Sony 2001 D, Sony SW-77, a Radio Shack DX-375 or a Sangean ATS909.

Local stations

First of all, the local radio scene of course is of great interest to me and is studied first, even if this cannot be called DX-ing. Some of these stations have even verified my reception reports, probably because they do not get many reports, I even got the first QSL’s in the World of two new stations, I found in Costa Rica and Tobago which no DX-er had reported before me.

Studies of propaaation conditions I saw

Most Third World countries are located in the Tropical Zone and propagation conditions are different from what we know in Europe or Japan. At noon, the Sun is nearly vertically above you and your shadow is just a small circle around your feet.

That means that from about 8 AM until about 4 PM local time, all stations on MW and the SW bands from 2 to 10 MHz have faded out, except for stations located within relatively short distances.

I measured these maximum davtime distances to be as follows:

On MW: 200 km, when the signal path is over land, and 500 km over sea. On 2 - 10 MHz SW: 500 km over land and 1,600 km over sea.

On SW above 10 MHz only a few international stations broadcasting towards that particular Region can be heard during daytime, and often with weak signals.

The worst experience of dx-ing during daytime, I got on the Fiji Islands where it is hopeless. My bungalow was located 80 km from the capital Suva, so it was even out of reach on FM, meaning that this band was completely dead.

On MW two transmitters located at Sigatoka just 10 km away, were heard with their programmes “Fiji 1” in Fijian (927) and “Fiji 2” in Hindustani (1206)were heard and that was all on MW at daytime!

On Shortwave I carefully tuned from 2 to 22 MHz one day at noon on Fiji, but only 5 weak stations could be heard at all, including Radio Australia and Radio New Zealand International. Thus only seven stations in total on all broadcast bands! That is DX-ing during daytime in the mid-Pacific!

At niaht, between Sunset and Sunrise, the conditions change and become more similar to the situation, we know in Europe and Japan on MW and SW. Of course the nearby stations in the Tropical Bands are stronger. Utility interference is very rare.

On Fiji the situation also improved somewhat on MW and SW at night, and most of the active stations in the Pacific could be heard. But they are not a big number anyway.

Another characteristica for the Tropics, is that dawn and dusk only last for a few minutes. It is, as if somebody slowly turns the sunlight on or off.

29

Page 30: Bulletin of the DANISH SHORTWAVE CLUB … of the DANISH SHORTWAVE CLUB INTERNATIONAL for short wave listeners and DX’ers No5 July 2002 Volume 46 Most of the participants at the

The same happens with the appearance just before sunset and disappearance right after sunrise of the stations on MW and SW. They fade in or out very quickly.

During my Dxpeditions I have made several more scientific measurements of these propagation conditions in the tropics on the 60 metreband and I will analyse them sometime in the future for an article in SWN.

I should also mention the Thunderstorms. Particularly during the Rain seasons, they build up during the day, and in the late afternoons and evenings very heavy rain showers with frequent lightning’s are happening. They not only cause a lot of static noise on MW and SW, but often the electricity is lost for minutes or hours.

DX-inn rare stations in the Region

Besides listening to the local stations and enjoy their music, it is of course a challenge to try to catch on MW or SW some of the many other broadcasting stations in the Region, particularly those which are difficult or impossible to hear at home in Europe.

Most of the SW-stations using more than 50 watts of power can normally be heard at night within 1000 km, if they are on the air.

I have noticed, however, both in Ecuador, Costa Rica and Jamaica that a nearby mountain range severely can put a damper on the signals from stations behind, both on MW and SW. Thus my listening range from the islands of Barbados and Tobago was much better than from the 3 mountainous countries just mentioned.

It will go too far to mention here all the good DX-stations, I have heard on my Dxpeditions, but just a few:

From Sri Lanka I heard on MW the Maldive Islands (1449 kHz), AFRTS Diego Garcia (1485) and on SW Bhutan (5030).

Some good ones I heard on Fiji on MW were RF0 Tahiti (738) AFRTS Kwajalein (1242) Cook Islands (630) New Caledonia (666) and Tonga (1017).

The DX-ers in New Zealand demonstrated that with good antennas they could easily catch Hawaii and the West coast of North and Central America on MW being 11,000 km away !

On SW I easily heard all the active stations in Papua New Guinea, R Vanuatu (4960), The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (5020) and ZLXA, Radio Reading Service in Levin, New Zealand (3935).

On Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica and Aruba I made a lot of DX and heard on MW nearly all the Caribbean stations and the stations of the north coast of South America. Most of them no longer broadcast on SW.

But do not believe that ALL stations are booming in, if you are relatively close to them. An example is Radio Buenas Nuevas in San Sebastian, Huehuetenango, Guatemala on 4800 kHz which I heard after sunset in Palengue, Chiapas, Mexico. Despite that distance to the 1 kW transmitter was just 250 km, there still was much noise on the frequency. On rare occasions it can be heard just as well here in Denmark.

Listening to international broadcasters

When you are longtime away from home, it is very useful to be able to hear the international broadcasters on SW to catch up

with the latest news. That is not a problem to receive the broadcasts beamed towards the Region you are in.

I am pleased that Radio Denmark can be heard well in all continents via the transmitters in Norway.

Research for DBS Updates

As you know, the Danish SW Club International now publishes an annual Domestic Broadcasting Survey as a guide to DX-ers. It has to be updated, and during my Dxpeditions I also make some research on what really can be heard in that Region.

For example, when I was in South Africa at the Kruger National Park, one evening I was only 10 kilometres from the border of Mozambique. I checked all their registered SW-frequencies and found that only 3 were in use. The rest were inactive, but in most publications they are still listed as being active.

In Venezuela 10 stations are listed on Shortwave, but I was only able to hear 4, when I was on Aruba in February 2002, even if Aruba is only 30 km from the coast of Venezuela. It was even worse with Colombia: 28 stations are listed on SW, but only 3 could be heard !

With such observations, the DBS show the real situation and not a theoretical one.

Contacts with local DX-ers

There is a big interest amongst the populations in the Third World to learn what is going on in the World outside, as well as inside their own country.

In several countries in Africa and Asia there is still just one Broad- casting Service which is owned by the State, and many of those who can afford it, buy a portable shortwave receiver to hear views from abroad on the current affairs.

I tried to find out how widespread the DX-hobby is amongst these listeners to the international broadcasters.

In Asia, Japan is leading with about 400 dedicated DX-ers, and in South Asia and Indonesia you will find some scattered around.

In Africa there are very few, whereas the number is quickly increasing in Latin America these years, particularly in the more industrialized countries like Brazil, Argentine, Chile and Mexico. In Mexico and Brazil there are some hundred DX-ers in each country.

The Danish Shortwave Club International has had members in more than 35 countries around the world for 24 years now, so of course I have tried to meet some of these and other DX-ers when I visited their countries.

This happened in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Argentine, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Jamaica. In several cases I have been visiting their private homes and listened together with them on their receivers. All of them showed great friendship and hospitality to me.

The most exclusive event happened in March 1999 when I was invited by two Sinhalese DX-ers, Victor Goonetilleke and Sarath Weerakoon to stay for 3 weeks in their bungalows south of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and do my DX-ing from there.

Their treatment to me was fantastic. Besides the DX-ing, they showed me a lot of their green, very fertile country with its many historical monuments. I also got first-hand insight in their culture and daily life.

Page 31: Bulletin of the DANISH SHORTWAVE CLUB … of the DANISH SHORTWAVE CLUB INTERNATIONAL for short wave listeners and DX’ers No5 July 2002 Volume 46 Most of the participants at the

In Argentine in March 1995, two of our members, Gabriel Ivan Barrera and Marcel0 Cornachioni during a weekend took me to Gabriel’s family ranch on the Pampas 340 km SSE of Buenos Aires.

That was an ideal DX-location with the nearest neighbouring house being 500 metres away and a completely flat terrain for 500 km or more in all directions.

We sat up each night and heard a lot of Latin American SW stations. There was no time to DX on MW or FM where the bands also were crowded with stations from Argentine, Uruguay and Brazil.

I have attended the annual National DX-Meeting in Mexico two times. That was in early August 1998 in Tehuacan, some 230 km SE of Mexico City, and in early August 2000 in Oaxaca 200 km further south, not so far from the Pacific city of Acapulco. By the way, the first of these Meetings was organized by two young, female DX-ers.

In Mexico the DX-hobby is developing very fast these years. There are now about 10 local DX-Clubs in this big country, but they have no umbrella organisation like the Swedish DX Federation. Instead they arrange on shift a DX-Meeting once a year. These are very popular for Mexican DX-ers as well as for all Mexican SW broadcasters.

In contrary to the European DX Community, the average age of these DX-ers is between 25 and 30 years and they are very enthusiastic with this new hobby for most of them.

At the first Meeting in 1995 on the westcoast just 7 DX-ers participated. In 1998 there were about 60 and in 2000 about 70, besides a few girlfriends, wives - and children! For Mexicans, the DX-hobby is a family event! In the Meeting held in 2001 in Guanajuato in Central Mexico again 70 participated.

In February 1998, Toshi Ohtake, Risto Vahakainu and I took part in another kind of DX-Meeting, namely the DX-Convention of the New Zealand Radio DX League on the occasion of their 510’~ Anniversary.

By the way, the most interesting hours for DX-ing in New Zealand is around local sunset (Latin and North America) and local sunrise (India and Africa). The stations in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Far East are easy to hear for these DX-ers.

So when I listened to some of these stations at their DX-Camp at 11 PM, I suddenly found myself alone. All the Kiwi DX-ers had gone to bed. What a pleasant way of making DX compared to our DX-ing all night here in Europe to be able to hear Latin America.

Although New Zealand cannot at all be regarded as a Third World country, this long weekend at Camp lona on the South Island together with enthusiastic DX-ers from New Zealand and Australia confirmed to us once again:

The DX-hobby on SW and MW is exactly the same all over the World no matter to which nationality, race or religion you belong.

The oldtimers attending the DX-Convention in New Zealand told us that the DX-spirit 40 and 50 years ago was exactly the same as we know it today.

When you meet a new DX-friend, you immediately have a common hobby to talk about, and in most cases he is also ready to show you his country and culture.

Visits to local radiostations

During my travelling, I have only visited a few radiostations, because this is very time consuming and often they will not let you in, if you do not have an appointment. But I will mention the highlights from a few of these visits:

When I was in Ecuador in 1995 I was a guest of Sonja Persson and Richard McVikar at HCJB which I was shown extensively in Quito and Pifo. But I also visited small stations like Radio Bahai’ in Otavalo and Emisora Gran Colombia in Quito

In March 1999 on Sri Lanka, Victor Goonetilleke drove me in his new car to the nearly operational VOA relaystation at lranawila which was going to replace the old station at Ekala. Thanks to Victor’s contacts as radioamateur with leading persons at the new station, I got permission as the first DX-er from abroad to visit this facility.

It is located 75 km north of Colombo on the westcoast in an area of coconut palms. It is clearly marked as a U. S. Government Installation, but is heavily protected by Sri Lankan guards with ready-to-shoot Kalashnikov guns. They took no chances with us!

The U.S. Station Manager, Mr Gary Wise, and the Technical Officer, Sri Lankan Mr. Allan Anandappa briefed us about this modern relay station which did start its first test transmissions four months later.

They had 4 Marconi transmitters and 16 curtain antennas of 165 meters height. They were constructed to be able to cover directions towards South East Asia, China, South and Central Asia, the Middle East and East Africa. The VOA signals from Washington have to pass the Pacific Ocean via 3 satellites to reach Iranawila.

Halfway back to Colombo, we stopped at the small town of Ekala and took a look at the old 35 kW transmitters which at the time was used by the VOA and the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Today the VOA no longer uses and supports this station and its domestic transmissions have been reduced.

When I was visiting Ocho Rios on the north coast of Jamaica, our Jamaican member Richard Greenwood took me on a beautiful drive along the coast to the home of the late writer and composer Noel Coward.

Later on I hired a local young, very black man to sail me a tour along the coast in his row boat. Sailing out there over the coral reef, I pointed at some antennas on a hilltop near the coast and asked which station they belonged to. “To my station, lrie FM !” he said. lrie means “Excellent” in the local language Patois. That is a nationwide FM-network which broadcasts Reggae music 24 hours a day, and he appeared to be a modern reggae singer and Disc Jockey employed at this station.

He then invited me for a visit at the station in Ocho Rios which was very interesting. I saw their modern studios, the news department with busy journalists and their huge collection of records with Reggae music.

After that we went to a gramophone record studio, where he and two other local singers sang four songs in English and Patois dedicated to me. The songs were cut on a record which only exists in this sole copy.

When I listen to that nowadays, it reminds me in a unique way of my many journeys to exotic countries and meeting their different cultures, radiostations and DX-ers.
