ince the day our Foundation was established, the idea of helping UHS build the healthcare system of tomorrow has

been the very heart and soul of everything we do. The contributions we receive from our generous donors benefit the patients and residents who are being cared for today – and those who will seek us out for care in years to come. In every decision we make, we always ask, “How will what we do today impact future generations?”

Consider, for example, the Foundation’s accomplishments over the past two decades. Working together, the donors, volunteers, trustees and staff have grown the organization’s assets from less than $7 million to more than $21 million. Over that same time period, we allocated more than $16 million to UHS program enhancements and the purchase of vitally needed medical equipment in a host of clinical departments.

Allocations have ranged from three-dimensional breast tomosynthesis, a high-tech machine that helps the UHS Breast Center diagnose cancer with greater precision than ever before, to the construction of a new and expanded Intensive Care Unit. Over the past 20 years, Foundation contributors have also enabled the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to quadruple in size, and UHS Hospitals, UHS Senior Living at Ideal and Twin Tier Home Health to enhance care and service to thousands of patients and residents.

S Cory Jacobs, left, and Betsy Pietriyk

Building on Our Legacy

Because of the legacy of support on which we are able to build each year, the people of our community who turn to UHS for care will benefit from these program, service and equipment improvements for many years to come. Every dollar donated has been strategically spent to have a positive and significant effect on life in the Southern Tier.

The Foundation’s achievements are based on shared commitment, belief in a common goal, tenacity and a can-do approach. Healthcare today exists in a challenging environment, constantly adapting to meet the needs of its most important constituency, its patients. We of the Foundation will continue to build to meet the future needs of healthcare in our region, and look forward to working with our community’s generous residents to make this progress possible.

With gratitude and kind regards,

E very gift and grant received by the UHS Foundation enhances the programs, services, facilities and technologies that enable UHS to

manage costs, improve care and grow market share. Through donations received in 2015, the

Foundation was able to provide funding for a number of significant projects. But it’s often the smaller enhancements that mean the most to patients, and many of those were realized through Foundation grants as well:

The purchase of temporary pacemakers make it possible to regulate patients’ heart rhythms when they are experiencing acute cardiac conditions. This provides a bridge until more permanent treatment, if necessary, can be provided.

An orthopedic trauma fracture table allows surgeons to perform a variety of orthopedic procedures that require unique positioning and traction capabilities, creating an appropriate surface for the highly individualized treatments.

Updated BiPap machines help patients breathe easier using non-invasive ventilation, ensuring comfort and safety, and new message boards ease communication between the rehab team, short-term rehab patients and patients’ family members.

he year saw a transition in leadership at the Foundation: After 20 years of service, Betsy Pietriyk retired as executive director. The Betsy

Pietriyk Restricted Fund was created in her honor and seeded with $50,000. “The fund recognizes Betsy’s extraordinary dedication, leadership and success as the Foundation’s longest-serving executive director,” said Gary VanNostrand, board chair.

Cory S. Jacobs was named executive director in 2015. She had served most recently as vice president for Development at United Methodist Homes. Previously she held posts as director of Development at the SUNY Broome Foundation and senior director of Major Gifts at Binghamton University. “Cory brings to our Foundation 16 years in fund development and expertise in the management of gifts and grants,” Mr. VanNostrand said. “Following a nationwide search, we were very pleased to find an exceptional person right here in our own community.”

The Foundation thanks all of its donors and supporters for continuing to stand with the organiza-tion as UHS creates the outstanding healthcare experience of tomorrow.
