Background • The Building Control & Standards Faculty launched

September 2007• Wide ranging membership.• Currently over 300 CIOB members have expressed an

interest in Building Control • Well over 100 Building Control professionals have

registered interest in developing Building Control & Standards as a specialist discipline and future faculty

• Public interest in CIOB members operating in a range of professions – therefore a requirement to be better informed of standards required has implications for CPD.

Faculty Objectives• Raise the professional profile of building control practitioners• Share/disseminate and promote best practice in the field of Building

Control and advise on standards• Assist individuals who are currently working within all sectors of Building

Control to gain additional recognised professional qualifications• Offer a structured training programme to those new to the building control

sector, and promote building control as a good career path• Raise the profile and recognition of building control teams• Create wider networking opportunities between building control teams

and the industry.• Develop formal links with relevant professional bodies/ provide

representatives (‘ambassadors’)• Provide a forum for the promotion of best practice, and for networking

with other construction professionals• Encourage wider recruitment into the building control profession

Benefits to Building Control

• Technical expertise available to wider membership• Increased creditability with local and central government • New faculty will better serve its members and through

them increase public interest• Develop ‘Ambassadors’ in field of Building Control• Enable branches to engage with BC professionals and

develop enhanced CPD provision• Wider industry recognition and take up of PDP for

graduate training

Action Plan - 2010• Work with other CIOB Faculties and Interest Groups to

investigate setting up of an awards scheme to promote and recognise the Building Control profession.

• Student Engagement

• Continue to advise CIOB members through the participation in the Ambassadors programme.

• Continue to establish working links with branches to ensure quality CPD in Building Control and related disciplines – Promote Parts L & F to all regions

• Work with other areas within CIOB to introduce mechanisms to promote routes into the BC & S faculty with a view of encouraging recruitment into the Building Control profession

Action Plan - 2010• Continue as a member of the BC Alliance set up to advise

the CLG on the future provision of Building Control within England & Wales

• Organise 1-2 National events – one will focus on Building Regulations L & F

• Respond to government consultations on Building Control related issues

• Promotion of Faculty using media – minimum of 2no. Articles in Contact and related publications

• Participate as necessary in CIOB initiatives to support members affected by the current economic situation

Future of building control• Recent government consultation

• The system has been very effective; for example, deaths caused by fires in the home are at the lowest for 45 years and over 97% of all new homes meet the current standards for sound insulation. The inclusion of access to buildings in the regulations has seen a positive cultural change where access is now more readily incorporated into the design of new buildings. In addition, the energy efficiency of new homes has been dramatically improved over the last ten years.

Future of building control

• Feedback from stakeholders tells us that, while the system is not broken, it has some significant weaknesses that must be tackled if we are to ensure that it remains fit for purpose in today’s world and in the future.
