Phil Housley is in his first season behind the bench for the Sabres after being named the 18th head coach in Buffalo’s franchise history. The Hockey Hallof Famer and former Sabres defenseman is the seventh alumnus to serve as the team’s head coach. Housley joined the Sabres after helping to guide the Nashville Predators to their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2016. Named an assistantcoach on May 22, 2013, Housley was a driving force behind one of the NHL’s best defensive groups throughout his tenure. A native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Housley began his coaching career in 2004 as head coach of Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota. The 25 wins and 53 points in the opening 44 games are the second most in a season in club history (30-10-4, 64points in 2016-17). TURNING TO JANUARY The Jackets move on from their December schedule with a 10-game January slate, including six road contests. JONES AN ALL-STAR AGAIN Seth Jones was named to his second-straight All-Star Game on Wednesday. After making his debut last year in Los Angeles, he’ll join39 other players on Jan. 27-28 in Tampa Bay. The Arlington, Texas native, who leads CBJ blueliners in assists and points (7-21-28),

ranks third-T among NHL defensemen in points since December 1st with 4-12-16 in 19 contests. He has posted two-straight multi-assists games (fifth/sixth multi-point games of campaign) on Sunday vs. Florida and Monday at Toronto. Including a career-best six-game point streak (3-4-7) from Dec. 20-29, he has collected 3-9-12 in his last 11 games. DUBOIS AND PANARIN’S MEMORABLE DECEMBERS Artemi Panarin and Pierre-Luc Dubois provided the offense in December for the Jackets. Panarin posted 5-13-18 in 15 Decembercontests, tying the club mark for most assists (Knutsen, Mar. 2001) and points (Vyborny, Dec. 2006) in a calendar month in club history.Dubois added 4-8-12 in 15 December games, tied for the third most assists by a rookie in a single month in franchise history and thesecond-most points (14, Zherdev, Mar. 2004). John Tortorella was named head coach of the Jackets on 10/21/15.  He has compiled a 555-448-134 record in 1,137 games during his NHLcoaching career with TBL, NYR, VAN and CBJ.  His teams have qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs 9 times and he led TBL to the 2004Stanley Cup championship and the NYR to the 2012 Eastern Conference Final. The Boston native won his 2nd Jack Adams Award as NHL's Coach of the Year (1st in 2003-04 w/ TBL) after leading CBJ to the best season inclub history in 2016-17 (50-24-8). He ranks 1st among U.S.-born coaches in all-time NHL wins and on 12/18/16, he became the 24th coach inNHL history to win 500 games.
