This book is based on two symposia held in 1988 at the XVIII International C o n p of Entomology in Vancouver. Its purpose is to review some of the critical issues relating to t e scientific basis of biological control with the objective of im roving the performance of biological control programmes. Although konwledge is insufficient to predilct the recise outcome of manipulations of natural enemies research has now provided ways of reducing t l e uncertainty and raising the chances of success. However, there is as yet no concensus on the underlying mechanisms of opulation d namics and insect hehaviour which is reflected in the sometimes opposing views of t1e authors oYthe various chapters. They do agree that aggregation of attack is important in bringin about control. Its importance in population dynamics is discussed by W. W. MURDOCH and the beaaviour that brings it about by B. D. ROITBERG. In several other chapters M. MACKAUER and other authors provide demonstrations of its importance in particular pesdnatural enemy systems in field situations and in greenhouses. In two complementary chapters L. E. EHLER and J. WAAGE address the important issue of how this knowledge can be applied to the selection of natural enemies for introduction in classical biological control. A. P. GUITIERREZ and others describe a metabolic pool model which has been successfully used to evaluate the impact of natural enemies on the yield of the alfalfa crop in California. Genetic issues in relation to the collection and laboratory propagation of natural enemies are examined by R. T. ROUSCH. Examples of ecologically sound habitat management for enhancing natural mortality are provided by H . F. VAN EMDEN. P. HARRIS discusses environmental impact of biological control in relation to fears of damage to non-target organisms by introduced biological control agents and C. A. TIDSELL important data on the economic benefits of some biological control programmes in Australia.

In all 20 authors contribute to the 15 chapters of this stimulating book which provides a valuable overview of some of the new developments in understanding biological control which will hopefully lead to improvements in its practice. It has only been possible to touch on a few of the critical issues in this short review to indicate the wealth of topics which are addressed. Anyone interested in pest management should read the book for an u to date review of many aspects of current research and thinking applied to a better understanding o?biological control. D. J. Der Verfasser, einer der namhaftesten Entomologen unserer Zeit, hat sich neben seinen Forschungen in vielen Bereichen der Entomologie auch der geschichtlichen Seite dieser Wissenschaft angenommen. Unter anderem berichtete er mehrfach aus seiner Heimat Oberfranken iiber land- und forstwirtschaft- lich schadliche Insekten und ihre Bekampfung in friiheren Jahrhunderten. Auf dasselbe geographische Gebiet bezieht sich sein jetzt vorliegendes Biichlein iiber nutzbare Insekten. Er widmete es seiner Vaterstadt Hof, welcher er damit ein Kleinod schenkte. Wie er darin die Bienenzucht, Nutzung von Ameisen, Insekten als Nahrung, Insektenprodukte in der Heilkunde, Verwendung von Insektengallen und vieles andere mehr darstellt, ist meisterhaft. Hier wird Wissenschaft gleichermagen serios, interessant und anschaulich sowie volkstiimlich dargeboten. Die mit sehr vie1 Geduld und Fleid zusammengetragenen und aufbereiteten Informationen machen deutlich, wie eng und vielfaltig die Beziehungen der Menschen zu den Insekten friiher waren und heute noch sind. Die geschichtliche Komponente der Entomologie wird leider seit Iangem arg vernachlassigt. Das Buch wird hoffentlich dazu beitragen, diesem interessanten Wissensbereich wieder mehr Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen.
