The combination of Psychology and Criminology offers a fascinating and complementary programme of study. Through this degree, you will be provided with the opportunity to learn about factors influencing human experience and behaviour, an introduction to criminological theories and the nature of crime in society, and an understanding of crime and criminal behaviour from a number of different perspectives.

Course duration: 3 years (full-time)

Year 1 is studied at Runshaw College’s Euxton Campus and subsequent years are studied at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston.

Price: £9250* per year (for Year 1 at Runshaw, Years 2 & 3 will be subject to UCLan tuition fees).

How will I be assessed?

Assessment involves one or more of the following:

• Examinations: multiple choice questions, a mix of seen and unseen essay-type questions

• reports of empirical investigations (‘laboratory’ exercises and final year projects)

• essays

• IT and study skills exercises

• statistical exercises

• presentations.

What progression is there?

Upon completion of Year 1, you may continue to study both topics through to graduation, or to specialise in either Criminology or Psychology.

In Years 2 and 3, what you study depends on the route you take. You can choose to stay as a Joint Honours student, studying both Psychology and Criminology or you can decide to drop one subject and continue with either a BA (Hons) in Criminology or study a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. You may also choose to study another Psychology degree offered by UCLan such as Forensic Psychology, Applied Psychology, Health Psychology, Neuropsychology or Sport Psychology.

If you complete the ‘Professional Route’ in Psychology, you will qualify for the British Psychological Society (BPS) Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) – which is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist (provided a minimum standard of a 2:2 honours degree is achieved). This level of recognition is required for entry to postgraduate courses for those wishing to train as professional psychologists. If you complete the BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology you will be eligible for Graduate Membership of the BPS.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need 80 UCAS points taken from:

• a minimum of 2 A Levels at Grade A*-C

• a National Diploma/Extended Diploma at Grade MMP

• an NVQ Level 3 in a relevant subject

• an Access to Higher Education Diploma at Pass.

All applicants will additionally require GCSE English & maths at Grade A*-C/9-4 or equivalent.

Although not a requirement for this course, GCSE English and maths at Grade A*-C/ 9-4 may be a requirement for progression to some careers.

You may also qualify for the course if you have other qualifications or relevant life or work experience.
