OB the wall near the Judge's beach were a number of surgical charts, relating to pathology and anatomy of theapine, spinal cord and muscles and nerves of ths back. Near the witness stand was the skeleton of a female. These accompaniments, taken in connection with the fact of ths large number of surgeons present and the character of the testimony, made one have atlleast a fugitive idea tbat he was in the amphitheatre of a medical college.

The first witness called on the part of tbe defense was

The rapid enaanoemeat ml values now going on startles the conservatives, even more so taaa it did a year ago, when loud prediction* of coming disasters were enunciated, hut not fulfilled. A trial of Senton's vibrating propeller fot canal-boats, owned by W. B. & Jesee L. Kdsy, of Wfeltabali, New Vork, took plaos yesterday s t the foot of v an Brunt street, this city. At tbe bow of the csnai-boat u.-ed yesterday is an upright shaft of iron, at tbe bottom of which is a trans Wiie shalt faurteen feet long. On ea«h slJe o! this are paddles thr**i feet wide. Aa tbe transverse shaft works backward and forward the padd.es present a flat .-uriace during tbe stroke, and an oblique surface during tbe return. Ths ao-tlon ot a canoeist In paddling i l lustrate the movement. Placed at the bow. the current goes underrieath tbe boat and is lost at the stern, and DO wave arises to wash the banks. A twelve-horae power engine, with i b u inch cylinder, with thirty-five strokes, was used. With a 12x24 Inch cylinder, sixty stroke* to a minute, the experiment demonstrated that a speed of seveu miles an haor could be attained with a loaded boat. Ths paddles can be raised or lowered to eorrespond with the draught of water of the boat. Tbe engine, boiler, etc , ocempj only a small space, and the machinery t« so simple that a boy can handle it. Tbe invention can be applied to las barges, lighters, etc.
