expand your vocabulary in an efficient, convenient and accessible manner, less tedious than trawling through the dictionary. In April 2015, BIGGIKO OOO released the Word of the Day: Learn English app so one can learn a new word in seconds. Along with the daily word sourced from the OED, this successful app shows the etymology, definition and application

of the word. The words are sourced by English professors and personalised depending on your results from an initial vocabulary assessment. The app is becoming increasingly popular having received $30K in revenue by this August.

The way in which we express ourselves forms the foundation of how we are perceived. The app claims to help you to “sound smarter”, however studies have shown that it helps you be smarter. Ironically, jouissance encapsulates the intellectual delight provided daily by the Word of the Day app. The surge of dopamine (the chemical messenger associated with gratification) that is released on receiving a notification causes the word and definition received to be stored long-term. Therefore, your bodily reaction to learning new vocabulary in the form of a notification associates the information with a reward response, optimising memorisation and recall. This system of delivering the information separates this particular dictionary app from others such as Merriam Webster or Magoosh.

Our language is growing at an average rate of a thousand official new words per year. Just as it is important to keep up to date with the ebb and flow of the news, we must do the same with linguistic evolution. Whilst the team of OED editors might have been having a little too much fun with sesquipedalianism (the practice of

using long, obscure words), without this growth in vocabulary, problems of misapprehension arise. This might only seem an issue of theoretical importance, however, examples of challenges arising through a limited vocabulary suggest otherwise. In Mexico, the language, Yucatec Maya, has developed, not through formalisation, but through word of mouth. Rather than inventing new words, they make do with original ones. For example, a hammer is referred to as ‘stick to hit with’, which appears sensible until you visit a Mayan building site where workers attempt to knock nails into a door with a chair leg.

The beauty and precision of the esteemed English language, which evades these ambiguities, is slowly dissipating. The average time per day that a person reads has halved over the past 15 years, whilst use of everyday slang has tripled. According to Pew Research Center, the richest adults are three times more likely to read than those with a household income lower than $30K. The Word of the Day app offers a free, easy alternative to learning vocabulary compared to more time-consuming methods. You can learn a new word in the same number of seconds that it would take to check a text.

Cambridge (7th) and Edinburgh (20th) Universities both held on to their spots.

The fall has been blamed on poorer teaching as well as declining research as top academics and students around the

world, but particularly in Europe, may not see the UK as an attractive place to study as a result of Brexit.

According to director of research at QS, Ben Sowler, “Numerous sources, from UCAS to the Higher Education Policy Institute, have drawn the same connection between Brexit and lower British appeal among the global international student community.”

Over half of the nation’s top universities (66) saw a drop in their student to staff ratio while many (59) had fewer research citations. International students enrolling had fallen at 51 universities, the data found.

The East Terrace Garden at Windsor Castle has been opened to the public for the first time in forty years. The public may visit at week-ends until the end of September 2020. This garden has a long royal history. It was created by George IV in the 1820s, and he acquired the prominent bronze urns. Sir Jeffrey Wyatville, the architect, designed the garden to enhance the view from the King's new suite of royal apartments in the Eastern facade. Windsor Castle was extensively remodelled in 1824. Sir Jeffrey Wyatville sought a friendly, domestic style for the Eastern facade, rather than a formal castle appearance. The same concept was applied to the garden. In World War II it had been dedicated to allotments; Princess Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret honed their gardening skills there, each having her own allotment. At one time the garden had also been a bowling green.

The garden now has yew trees shaped into domes, and tapering rose beds radiate in a geometric pattern from a central pool filled by a bronze, lotus fountain. There are 3,500 mostly shrub roses.

Prince Albert took a keen interest in the planting, and the Duke of Edinburgh redesigned the flower beds and commissioned the lotus fountain. The 34 orange trees were a present from King Charles X of France.

The statues came from the Privy garden at Hampton Court, and there are also four bronze figures made for Charles I by Hubert Le Seur; they gaze inwards at the pool and fountain.

The Eastern facade garden has been used by many Royals over the centuries for official portraiture. The garden forms a perfect mise en scène, as it lies beneath the Palace walls, displaying nature's beauty.

Two New Attractions at Windsor Castle

The second attraction at Windsor Castle is an Exhibition of Pantomime Paintings, indoors within the Waterloo Chamber. This is only the second time they have been displayed since the War. The fairytale paintings were made for the Queen's childhood war-time Pantomimes.

Claude Whatham, an evacuee, was the artist. Both Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret acted in the Pantomimes, raising money for the Household Wool Fund which made blankets for the soldiers at the Front.

The paintings are on wallpaper and usually covered by more formal portraits. They are striking in colour and most original. They should be seen. Marian Maitland. It is essential to book tickets for the garden and exhibition. Price is included in the Castle entry. Visit www.rct.uk

After the long, pandemic-induced, hiatus; High Street Kensington’s Design Museum

reopened their doors with one of the first exhibitions to reopen since lockdown began: Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers. For potential exhibition goers nervous about overcrowding, the exhibition is showing until the distant date of February 14th 2021 so there should be plenty of time for crowds to abate.

Upon stepping foot into the gloomily lit and beat-throbbing exhibition space you are greeted with a mysterious slogan: ‘There are no UFOs. Machine music is the only way forward’. The quote comes from Juan Atkins’s Model 500 track No UFO’s and gives visitors an idea of the

techno-futurist ambience of this highly enjoyable, electric exploration of techno-rave culture.

The dynamic and fast-paced beats which echo throughout the exhibition make the visitor feel like they’re back in their scandalous clubbing days and can’t help but provoke a little boogie whilst exploring the space. Accompanied by high-quality graphics and lightshows, the Electronic exhibition perfectly illustrates how electronic music evolved from wild-haired visionaries bent over theramins in the 19th century to one of the biggest music genres in the world with a thriving associated culture with its own rules and fashions.

The exhibition also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the fabled krautrock group Kraftwerk. This West German experimental band are justifiably heralded as some of the central progenitors of the electronic music scene that emerged in the 1970s and are given pride of place in the exhibition, with

a full 3D show of Kraftwerk screened in a small theatre to demonstrate the enduring influence of the godfathers of Electronic Dance Music (EDM).

Whilst the exhibition is all about sound, there are plenty of physical exhibits on show. Electronic starts by showing the evolution of electronic instruments such as early synthesisers. Further on into the show, there is a plethora of artwork inspired by the musical scene, ranging from techno album covers to some of the masks and outfits that clubbers in the 80s or 90s wore on the cutting edge of cult fashion.

Visitors are also presented with futuristic lightshows in several rooms, which combine the beat of the music into the visual experience. It is advised to bring your own headphones as certain sculptures or videos in the museum are accompanied with headphone jacks to listen to experimental tracks (or sometimes what just sounds like metal pieces colliding). However, disappointingly not all headphones work particularly well with the set-up, with tracks not always clear or loud enough to hear what is supposed to be playing.

Electronic also goes into depth on the sub-cultures of techno, house and rave music and where they emerged, in Detroit, Chicago and London respectively. This truly gives an immersive experience and will give even the most beat-adverse a grasp of the genre’s global reach, how it

became as huge as it is today, and why it is not slowing down. The exhibition goes into detail about other aspects of the club scene such as the acceptance and welcoming of side-lined minority groups like LGBTQ+ and the historical freedom to be who you are, from fashion to simply how you choose to dance. As a flip-side Electronic also explores how stringent laws designed to shut down clubs could cause irrevocable harm to both the scene and its practitioners. Finally, the exhibition climaxes with a visual live show from The Chemical Brothers, a famed electronic music group, who helped take the genre from the underground into everyday pop culture. The live show creates a 3D experience by using visuals, lights and sounds to produce a truly memorable and dance-inducing finale that makes it feel urgent and alive rather than just a museum piece.

If you love listening to electronic and dance music, want to know more about the history of the genre or even relive your clubbing days then the Electronic exhibition is for you. It is an incredibly entertaining and almost mesmerising experience. However, children under 12 are advised not to attend and sufferers from epilepsy should be aware of the heavy use of strobe lighting. For everyone else, this is an exhibition worth both seeing and hearing.Hugo Galea

DININGIN online: www.kcwlondon.co.uk

Inspired by London Fermentary, the recipe below was made during lock-down with stepson Sam, scientist and fermenting guru. He omitted black pepper but suggested I include it. What results is a glorious jewel of a jam, simple to make and delicious to eat either by spoon, spread on toasted sourdough, or added to, well, anything. It goes with savoury or sweet. For one jar:Fat bulb of garlic, peeled clovesLarge chunky thumb of fresh ginger (7/8cms), washedWhole unwaxed lemon, cut into quartersRoot of fresh turmeric, washed or 1 1/2 tsp of turmeric powderGenerous grind of black pepper2 tbsp of raw honey Pull on an apron (caution turmeric) and blend the first 5 ingredients in a food processor to a thin paste. You can play with the ingredients by putting in less garlic, more ginger or honey but try to buy fresh turmeric as it’s more bioactive. When the paste is ready add raw honey until it reaches a pesto-like consistency, then pour into a clean jar and leave on the kitchen worktop to ferment at room temperature for a few days. Flexible and fun, you can perk up this magic mix further with other spicy add-ins like chillies and horseradish or maximise medicinal qualities with antiviral herbs like ginseng and cinnamon. Once opened, keep in the fridge. Putting everything in a wider perspective can enable us to understand that viruses are billions of years old and so highly adept at survival and super-quick to adapt new behaviours. Plants are roughly 1 billion years old and more complex land plants around 300 million. Moving along the timeline in relation

to ourselves we now know that our oldest hominid ancestors are about 1 to 2 million years old and our own species in the form it is now only 35 thousand years old. Ancient eastern medicine can go back at least 5 thousand years and modern western medicine a mere few hundred years with a knowledge of viruses around 50 years.

Asian countries have long had the wisdom to live a healthy life by consuming immune-system boosting foods like garlic, ginger and turmeric as part of a daily diet. Interestingly Covid-19 infection and death rates appear much lower than those in the West. Let’s be guided by the science and look at a few of these simple foods with complex antiviral powers that might help to protect us against the onslaught of Covid-19. Most can be found in your kitchen cupboard, fridge or spice rack. GarlicMildly addictive and essential as salt in many dishes for adding extra pungent notes, garlic can help reduce the severity of upper viral respiratory infections and by modulating the immune system assist

in preventing them in the first place. GingerThe humble spicy root has been prized in Asia as a tonic for over 5 thousand years to treat many ailments, especially inflammation. Gingerol, the bioactive substance in fresh ginger, is believed to have antimicrobial properties that benefit the body by repelling viral infections. LemonHesperidin is a compound found in citrus fruits with the greatest concentration in the peel. In Ulasli’s 2014 study, hesperidin was found to inhibit the ability of a coronavirus to replicate itself. Further tests are ongoing. TurmericA fragrant cousin of ginger and renowned for the anti-inflammatory phytocompound curcumin, turmeric has long been popular in Asian cuisine for adding a subtle flavour and sunshine colour. According to recent studies curcumin can add another string to its medicinal bow by showing

mild activity against SARS-CoV – another coronavirus. Clinical trials are continuing. Black pepperLittle brown corns as hard as shot pack a punch, being rich in piperine with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Supportive in keeping infections at bay and providing relief from discomfort, the ‘king of spices’ black pepper is also enriched with vitamin C and works as an excellent antibiotic. HoneyRaw honey is the real deal here; many clinical studies have proved the phytonutrients in raw honey have antibacterial and antiviral properties that help to boost the immune system and fight sickness. Japanese scientists studying Manuka honey in 2014 found that this precious but pricey honey efficiently inhibited influenza virus replication.

Kensington Palace has re-opened. A visit to this Palace and its Gardens is always a rewarding experience. Designed by Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, it was Queen Victoria's childhood home and the home of William III, Mary II and Queen Anne. Today the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reside there with their family.

Kensington Palace has so much to offer visitors: State Apartments of Kings and Queens, the King's Gallery and the recently re-imagined childhood rooms of Queen Victoria.

The jewellery on display is magnificent, especially the tiara, the only known example of a tiara designed by a Consort for his Queen. It is a dazzling vision of emeralds and diamonds.

A new addition displayed in the Palace is the dress worn by the late Princess Diana, when she attended a Dinner hosted by President Reagan. She danced with John Travolta in this midnight blue velvet gown, designed by Victor Edelstein, and created a scene which was the epitome of beauty.Marian Maitland. Booking is essential.
