Hope for Africa?

“About 11.6 million Africans have been forced from their homes by wars and other conflicts, according to the United Nations.”-CNN

The continent of Africa is home to almost half of the displaced people in the world. (U.N.) Many countries have been criticized for failing to take care of refugees or internally displaced people.

One of the worst conflicts in Africa right now is the civil war in Somalia, which is forcing many Somalis to flee. A report was just released from the Oxfam international that harshly criticized the Somali government and even accused it of abandoning its people who are internally displaced.

Many displaced Somalis are fleeing to Dhadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya. The camp with facilities only designed for 90,000 people, houses 280,000 refugess.

Angelina Jolie visited the camp last month and observed that, "The toilets are already overflowing. There is not even enough space for trash dumps, so people are living amongst the garbage."

These types of conditions in refugee camps are not uncommon. In an attempt to improve the circumstances for the millions of displaced throughout Africa, the African Union is meeting October 19 for a weeklong conference.

African countries, “are expected to sign a pledge to help the displaced across the continent, according to the U.N. agency for refugee issues” (CNN). If successful, this will be the first agreement that gives countries the legal obligation to aid refugees across Africa. The special summit will focus on root causes, prevention, and solutions for displaced persons.

This Summit has the potential provide the help that refugees are desperately awaiting.
