Broadcast Media & Photography 2018 - 2019

For the future you want

If you are interested in audio visual technology, outside broadcasting, film and television, radio, digital media or photography (still and moving image), our exciting range of programmes will provide the specialist training you require.

To prepare you for a career in television, we offer training in everything from scriptwriting, directing, presenting, editing and production to HD camera operation, vision mixing for multi camera, lighting and sound. Our teaching in radio is equally diverse, including presenting, interviewing techniques, music programming, newsroom operations and production. We also offer training in audio visual technology, so you can gain technical expertise in video production, multi-media, sound and PA design.

Our photography programmes cover digital capture, retouch, studio, portraiture, fashion, advertising and photo journalism, from introductory level to BA. You will have opportunities to work on live industry projects and we welcome guest speakers and visits from major companies to give you real industry insights.

Our training and development courses meet the demands of the sector – students on our new Outside Broadcasting course are working with live clients such as the Scottish Rugby Union, Scottish Motorsports and Scottish Gymnastics in conjunction with the sports’ governing bodies and the BBC. We also have work placement opportunities with commercial video production and commercial photographers both here and abroad.

PARTNERSBROADCAST MEDIA & PHOTOGRAPHY We have five large photography studio

facilities including one with a drive-in studio, unique in photography courses in Scotland. Two have white infinity walls.

Television studio facilities at the Sighthill campus are equipped with a Tricaster vision switcher, complete with virtual set environments. This has resulted in a state of the art, high definition multi-camera production environment, enabling us to train our students in these processes and workflows with the latest cutting-edge equipment. The outside broadcasting equipment comes complete with a Livestream vision mixer, action replay and HD cameras which are used to stream live events held in Scotland at various internal and external venues.

Our CRE:8 centre at Milton Road includes a studio with green Chroma key and infinity curve, Avid editing suites for TV and video production, and a 96 seat auditorium for screenings.

OUR FACILITIES

The PDA is perfect for me; it will allow me to develop my skills to the very highest of levels by working side by side with industry professionals, and giving me and my colleagues all the tools needed to succeed in the highly demanding world of live OB.

Our students regularly visit the Forth One studios.

This year the BIPP College Award was won by BA Professional Photography graduate Leesa Tulloch for her outstanding portfolio, ‘Childhood Memories’ inspired by the Flemish Masters.

“The portraits I create are anchored in history yet contemporary in style. It is this juxtaposition reuniting history with memories of the sitter that feeds my desire to create unique and beautiful portraits with my camera”.

Leesa was also awarded a professional Associateship to the BIPP with her final portfolio.

SPOTLIGHTLEESA TULLOCH

I am thrilled and delighted to have been awarded the prestigious BIPP 2017 College Award for my portfolio. I have a huge debt of gratitude to both Jon Lee and Graham McGirk, my lecturers at Edinburgh College, for believing that it was possible.

In my first year, I got the chance to do a work placement at BBC Scotland. I got to know some great professionals and was able to get references from them.

In my second year, I made the best use of college facilities and equipment; I pulled off my portfolio and just before graduating college I had been noticed by the broadcasting staff from the Scottish Parliament who offered me to join Parliament’s broadcasting freelance pool.

At the moment I am continuing television studies at Edinburgh Napier University. I appreciate that Edinburgh College staff made me believe in my own potential, by pushing my creative abilities and making me feel needed for the course and the whole industry. I will definitely keep pursuing my career in television, and I am glad I started it at Edinburgh College.
