What do the British Film Council do?

• The British film council aims to promote, support and develop the forms of moving images. They promote the understanding and the appreciation of the Britain's rich film and television heritage and culture. They are an independent, non governmental body which classifies and censors film, video as well as computer related things based in the United Kingdom.

The main British production companies

Funding• Every year the council distributes around 27million from

the National Lottery and 27 million from the government to support: script development, film production, short films, cinema and film education. The script development provides 4 million a year to help support the high quality, commercially viable screenplays. The British film council also support the film production. The premiere fund provides 8 million a year to finance production of popular mainstream films. Short films can help new film makers break into the mainstream. They have a vision of to widen the choice of films shown in the UK cinemas.

Qualities to achieve British films• For a ‘film’ to qualify as a ‘British Film’ it needs to meet

many targets:• - Made by a British director• - British Producer• - A British Production Company• - A subject matter that informs on the British experience • - Has a British identity defined by the BFI • - Co-production with British input which will count as a

British film.

Supporting for British Films• Working in partnership with industry bodies, they strive to

create a sustainable and successful film industry that brings both cultural and economical benefits to the UK. To achieve this they provide direct financial support for the production of culturally British films. The BFI is now the lead body for films in the UK which includes a role as a lottery distributor, with responsibility for:
