With Hard Water With Soft Water

Although most of us put up with hard water, many ofus dont realise that you CAN do something about it.

Scott Jenkins of Scott Jenkins Water Softeners andBathrooms has been a plumber in West Sussexfor more than 15 years and has seen rst handthe problems created by hard water. One of thebiggest issues is Limescale deposits building up inheating systems causing damage, breakdowns andincreased heating costs. The same applies to your household water systemcausing damage to your appliances. The constantcleaning of limescale from shower heads, showerscreens and sinks is another problem experiencedin hard water areas. Hard water can also aggravateskin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

When a water softener is installed in your home, nolimescale will form which means much less cleaningand no need to buy limescale removal products.Savings will also be made, for example, soft waterrequires less washing powder - by up to 75%, youalso need less products for bathing and showeringand you also have less chance of large bills forpotential future problems with your heating systemand appliance breakdowns. Another big advantagepeople with softeners remark on is the luxury feelthat bathing or showering in soft water gives.

Neat and compact - Our softener tsperfectly under a kitchen sink

Scott originally started by selling the Harveymanufactured water softeners after being askedabout water softeners by several clients thatwere having bathrooms tted by his team. Scott, already having one in his own home and fullyappreciating the benets was able to offer adviceabout water softeners and installation. Harveyhave manufactured softeners in the UK for morethan 35 years and formerly traded under the

name of Kinetico Ltd. Harvey were impressedby Scotts commitment and business ethosand made him an area dealer for their premiumsoftener the TwinTec S3.The TwinTec S3 is different to other softeners. If you were to purchase an ordinary softeneryou would have quite a large machine, whichrequires you to carry a 25kg bag of salt. TheTwinTec however is small and compact, requiresno electricity and uses block salt like twohousehold bricks instead of heavy bags.Scotts Bathroom and Water Softener businesscovers Brighton and all the surrounding areas. He has a highly efcient team who concentrateon the bathroom supply and installation businessallowing Scott to supply, install, service and repairwater softeners. This ensures every customerbenets from Scotts expertise. From supply and delivery of salt to upgrading ofyour old water softeners Scott and his team arehappy to help.

    City councillors register their interests

Mental health workersthreaten to go on strike

two-page form, covering 10 simple questions.)

From today, you can easily check for yourself.

Previously, you would - like Brighton & Hove Independent journalists on Wednesday - have had to make an appointment to visit the councils Kings House headquarters, where you would be guided through the corridors of bureaucracy to a room containing a lever-arch file, the contents of which you are, strangely, not allowed to photocopy. (The taking of notes is allowed.)

And what would you have found? Nothing untoward, it seems. Not, at least, from a brief glimpse. Here are some bullet points: Councillor Julie Cattell, the Labour chair of the councils planning committee and a planner with East Sussex County Council, is the director and sole shareholder of CJ Planning Ltd, a planning agency, which will be wound up in the next six months. (A quick check with Brighton and Hove City Councils planning register shows a total 272 records of applications involving CJ Planning.); Councillor Jayne Bennett, a

Conservative councillor for Hove Park, appears to have the biggest property portfolio, listing six properties: 27 Hill Brow, Hove; 22 Eaton Court, Hove; 2A Bentham Road, Brighton; 7 Viaduct Road, Brighton; 166A Springfield Road, Brighton; and 74 Kemos Road, Portslade; Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, leader of the Conservative Group, is not far behind. The land and property he has comprises: 44 Dyke Road, Brighton; 28, 29 Ship Street, Brighton; 146 Preston Drive, Brighton; and 26 Warren Road, Brighton.

Three councillors - Councillor Robert Nemeth, a Conservative councillor who lists himself as owner of RS Nemeth Estates Ltd; Councillor Pete West, a Green councillor; and Councillor Phelim

Mac Cafferty, convenor of the Green Group - exercise their right under the 2011 Localism Act not to give an address/description of land.

The records show: The Member or co-opted Member has declared an interest in relation to this section, the details of which are withheld pursuant to Section 32 Localism Act 2011.

Basically, they apparently fear they might be subject to violence or intimidation.

In case you have not read this particular piece of legislation recently, it states that details need not be disclosed if the nature of the interest is such that the member or co-opted member, and the authoritys monitoring officer, consider that disclosure of the details of the interest could lead to the member or co-opted member, or a person connected with the member or co-opted member, being subject to violence or intimidation.

Theres much more. And, from today, you can test and trust to your own satisfaction.

Mental health workers for Brighton and Hove City Council are set to strike, in a dispute over night-time rotas.

UNISON said its 19 members in the mental health service were forced to work night shifts on a stand-by basis, even after working a day shift, with the threat of dismissal for non-compliance.

These are the mental health workers who are called out to assess people in crisis - whether it is at a police station, at home, or on the street.

Alex Knutsen, UNISON branch secretary, said: A voluntary night rota had successfully been in place for years it is only when senior managers decided it should be compulsory that problems arose. UNISON has put forward numerous alternatives to cover this essential service in a manner that does not place our dedicated members at risk, and more so, the people they assist.

The threats by the council to discipline and sack our members have been fundamentally damaging to generally reasonable industrial relations they are vindictive, and amount to straight out bullying.

He said he hoped the issue could be resolved - but the threat of dismissal must be withdrawn.

Caroline Penn, lead member for mental health at the council, said: They do a fantastic job and it is an absolutely vital service. I would be very concerned if it did come to strike action.

Denise DSouza, executive director of adult services said: We are looking forward to meeting UNISON early next week to hear their proposals to assist us in having a robust 24-hour approved mental health professional service across the city. We have a statutory duty to provide a responsive and sustainable service that ensures residents in need of an urgent assessment under the Mental Health Act receive one in a timely way throughout the day or night.

UNISON told the city council it would take night-time strike action from Friday, August 14, for six weeks, if the issue is not resolved. The dispute began in September 2014.

Preparations have also begun for a ballot of UNISONs entire council membership of 3,700 members. This would be the first all-out action taken by UNISON members in the city, over a local dispute, since the formation of the unitary authority in 1997.

Brighton Digital Festival names first chair

Brighton i360 soars to tallest structure in Sussex

    Jon Pratty (Photograph: Adam Tinworth)

    Bex Bastable@BexBastable

Brighton Digital Festival today (Friday) announces its chair as Jon Pratty, a digital thought leader who helped create the festival in 2011.

This is the first time the event has appointed a chair, marking an exciting step forward for the fastest-growing digital festival in the UK.

Mr Pratty has had an extensive career in the arts and digital sector, including roles with the Arts Council England and digital publishing companies.

    He will be responsible for

steering the strategy of the festival and leading the consortium group.

Im immensely pleased to join as chair at this exciting time in Brighton Digital Festivals development, he said. The consortium model that steers the festival is unique in that it draws both digital industry and creative sector organisations together.

This supports the festival in creating a socially centred approach to programming, that reflects the needs and wants of the regions thriving digital and creative industries.

Its official. At 6pm yesterday (Thursday), the Brighton i360 tower became the tallest building in Sussex - having reached a height of 120 metres. And theres still about 50 metres to go.

Eleanor Harris, the i360s chief executive, said: The i360 is now the tallest structure in Sussex - taller than Shoreham Power Station, which previously was the tallest structure, and Sussex Heights in Brighton and Hove, which was the tallest building, and other famous landmarks such as Chichester Cathedral and the Gatwick Air Traffic Control tower. Up close the tower is an incredibly elegant and beautiful piece of architecture, soaring up into the sky and it will be fantastic to see the tower revealed in all its glory when the square jacking tower, used to build the tower, is removed next month. I was fortunate to go up the jacking tower at the weekend with the construction engineers and already the view from 60 metres is stunning. I cant wait to see the views from the i360 when it opens next summer and the pod will glide up to 138 metres - more than double the height of the jacking tower.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Dont replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows Service With A Smile! Its been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Aaron Smith feels that its all about service. Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But its not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didnt focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didnt expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. Cloudy2Clear service Brighton, Hove & the surrounding areas

and Aaron is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. The truth is that its not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and

family of people Ive done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and hell be happy to help!

    Factfile:

Bess is a seven-year-old black and white female Border Collie who originally came to us with six puppies in March 2013. She is such a sweet girl and a firm favourite with the staff here at Shoreham.

Bess was in a home for two years but became uncomfortable with the other dog, so sadly had to come back to the centre.

She is a very shy girl and takes a little while to get to know and trust new people. Once shes had the time to become comfortable with you she is very cheeky and enjoys a fuss.

Bess loves treats and this is a great way to make friends with her. Being a typical Collie she is very bright and enjoys treat puzzle interactive games, and likes you to play too. She also really enjoys playing fetch with tennis balls and footballs.

Bess is looking for an adult-only home, where she can be the only dog. Its important that she has her own garden as she can be worried by loud noises and isnt comfortable around heavy traffic. She is learning to walk on very quiet roads, so a home where theres quiet walking places nearby would be ideal.

One of Besss fears is car travel. She is having training at the moment to make her feel more comfortable around the car. This is something new owners will need to continue as it will take time for Bess to be happy to get into a car and travel.

    Give a doga homecampaign

    www.dogstrust.org.uk

Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hoves unwanted dogs. This week we feature Bess, the Border Collie.

Pop-up dance areas will appear across the city, as part of a campaign to raise funds for a new performing arts hub in Brighton.

South East Dance will place floor squares around Brighton, which will provide a space for local artists to perform. The public will also be encouraged to get involved and join the professional community dancers.

Brightons very own Charleston group, Savoy Kicks has already lent its support to the campaign by dancing in a floor square on the citys iconic Bandstand.

The SPACE TO DANCE campaign aims to generate support for The Dance Space - a new home for dance in the heart of the Circus Street Market regeneration area.

South East Dance has raised more than 80% of the funds it needs for The Dance Space but

still needs to raise 500,000 of its 3.78m target by November 2015.

To raise the remaining amount the organisation is calling on local people and companies to back the campaign by making a donation based on whatever they can afford.

Jamie Watton CEO/artistic director of South East Dance said: We want to encourage dancing on the streets of Brighton and sharing the evidence on social media. This will help us raise awareness about The Dance Space and about the potential of dance to invigorate and potentially transform lives.

We still need to raise crucial funds to make The Dance Space happen and we can only do this with the support of local people and businesses in the area.

    Entertainment

Single release: Battery Operated OrchestraElectronic pop duo Battery Operated Orchestra (BOO) will appear on BBC Introducing: The South, on August 16, after releasing a new single: Tin Can Telephone.

The Brightonian husband-and-wife duo, Brigitte Rose and Chris Black (originally of Tasmania and Glasgow), create irony-free, unpolished-on-purpose DIY synthpop.

They met in London, practising in a dank room in Kings Cross, but soon fled the metropolis for the fresh sea air of Brighton, where they have self-released three EPs and an album (Incomplete Until Broken). Critics have compared them

to a cross between Stereolab, YMO, Cocteau Twins and Crystal Castles, their music being a crunch-up of radiophonics, J-pop, krautrock and imaginary childrens TV music.

The bands videos and CD artwork are all hand-made, and at live shows the pair perform alongside home-made film and light collages.

The newly released single, Tin Can Telephone, was created with guest remixers Vile Electrodes (Hastings) and JTA (Brighton).

    The aura of Zamora

The re-signing of Bobby Zamora has created an audible buzz among the Albion faithful, the like of which hasnt been heard since the inauguration of the Amex.

The 34-year-old Londoner enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career on the south coast, illuminating the Theatre of Trees with goals that fired Albion to two successive championships. Needless to say, he is held in very high regard in these parts.

Some people say you should never go back in football. Trying to re-live past glories doesnt always bear fruit. Peter Ward, whose strikes propelled Albion to the top flight in the late 1970s, enjoyed a largely-disappointing homecoming a few years later. The sublime John Byrne, who formed such a devastating partnership with Mickey Small

for just one season was a shadow of his former self during his two additional periods at the Goldstone.

Bobby is a markedly different player now to the one whose eye for goal earned a big-money switch to Spurs in 2003. Wearing the stripes, Zamora was a pacey forward, an unerring finisher, and was great in the air aided and abetted by the left boot of Paul Watson. A more-than-useful goalscorer since, he hasnt quite hit the back of the net as often. But he has played at a much higher level consistently. Add lining up alongside and against proven internationals, representing his country twice, and featuring in a UEFA Cup final, and Bobbys career can only be viewed as a success.

His link-up play is exceptional and he will fill the void created by Glenn Murrays premature departure in 2011. But, for all the skill and experience Bobby

brings to Albions much-improved forward line, his initial impact off the pitch could be priceless.

Bobby finished the chances created by one of the all-time great Albion squads. A group of players whose dedication, drive, team spirit, and will to win beautifully exemplified the supporters seemingly never-ending fight to secure the holy grail of Falmer.

The fans remember how good those times were and at its heart was Robert Lester Zamora. There is genuine excitement on the highways and byways of Sussex for a man who can be described only as a returning hero. Sometimes, the overall impact a player makes cannot be gauged in performances alone.

When he trots on to the hallowed Amex turf for the first time, the roar will be spine-tingling, emotion-charged, and crystallise exactly why we all love this wonderful game.

    Welcome home, Bobby.
