Ken Frost, a director of OhSoSwedish, which trades on the seafront to the east of the Palace Pier, said that the eastern side of the seafront was suffering from neglect while the western side was regenerated.

He said: With regard to the general decay of the seafront on the east side of the pier (unpainted railing, dilapidated areas, paveme wnt cracking) it is clear that the council only has eyes for the west.

Grants that have been awarded to Brighton have not, as far as I can see, been spent on the east side. Why? Where has the money gone? And why has it not been spent in part on the east side?

Ian Coomber, a planning consultant, who is working for both the Brighton Wheel and

the Soho House project at the Aquarium Terraces, also called on the council to back those schemes to bring the eastern side back to life.

Gill Mitchell, a Labour councillor who chaired the seafront scrutiny panel, said that the party would be making repairs to the seafront a priority now it had the most seats on the council.

She said: The full scale of the repair work needed to the Madeira Terraces has just become clear and is made more worrying by the fact that there is currently no funding solution for their restoration.

A council spokesperson said that it was closing only those units and sections of walkway that had to be closed for safety reasons.

Spotting examples ofeveryday typography

Most people come to Brighton for the beach, the shops or a good night out. But for blogger John Worthington, Brighton has other attractions.

The Scottish designer and self-confessed typography obsessive said that he spent more time getting lost in the maze of streets around the city centre than on the beach but the amount of great type on offer (not to mention the pubs, markets and galleries) made the diversion worthwhile.

Mr Worthington, a part-time printmaker who lives in London and writes a blog called Urban Typing, scrutinised the towns tiled doorways, painted shop signs and advertisements and even old coal-hole covers.

In a two-part blogpost, he wrote: It certainly wouldnt be a good type hunt without some coal-hole covers and the North Laine area has plenty.

Further afield, in Preston Street, he was delighted by earthy-coloured tiles, in a shop doorway, featuring hints of a decorative typeface that was almost completely faded away.

Elsewhere, there was faded lettering of Hart Manufacturing Hatter - hidden in plain view - high on the side of a building in

North Street.He reported: According to

Photo History Sussex, Hart Manufacturing Hatter was founded in the 1850s, meaning the type itself could be over 150 years old. Pretty good

going, considering its exposed location.

The lettering seems to be a mixture of three typefaces, a Clarendon-style slab serif, a regular grot and a more formal serif.

Brighton Marina is soldto Wellcome for 200m

Brighton Marina has been sold to the Wellcome Trust health charity for a reported 200 million. It will now become part of the trusts 18 billion investment portfolio, which provides income to fund its work.

The trust said that it had bought Premier Marinas Limited (PML) from the BlackRock UK Property Fund.

Peter Pereira Gray, managing director of the Wellcome Trusts Investment Division, said: Taking sole ownership of PML adds a third wholly-owned UK asset-backed operating business to the trusts investment portfolio and is a demonstration of our commitment to the industry and

our confidence in the management team and employees.

We will take a long term approach to the ownership of the business and look forward to the continued success and growth of PML.

BlackRock director Paul Tebbit said: PML has generated strong returns for BlackRock over the last decade during which time we have expanded the business significantly. We are very pleased to have sold PML to the Wellcome Trust and are confident that the business will continue to thrive under their stewardship.

Golfing cyclists to raise moneyall way from Orkneys to Paris

Paul Bonett, the Kemptown estate agent, is helping to raise money by undertaking the annual First Base Day Centre charity ride - 130 miles, from Brighton to Paris. In a day. On June 20, the longest day of the year.

But thats not enough for him and fellow fundraiser Jim Stevenson.

They are prefacing it with a ride from the tiny nine-hole golf course on North Ronaldsay on Orkney, down through Scotland and England, playing golf at a variety of courses on the way.

And, just make the 1,000-mile trip more strenuous, Mr Bonett will also be taking part in two or three aikido classes on the way. (He is an aikido teacher.)

The pair intend to leave North Ronaldsay on Monday, June 1, and arrive in Brighton on the evening of Wednesday, June 17.They will then play a last round at East Brighton Golf Course, get a

nights rest, and head for Paris with the main charity ride - leaving Brighton for Dieppe on the night ferry on June 19.

Mr Bonett said: We are hoping that at every course, we will get a bunch of golfers to play a round with us, raising money for the charity. Also, we hope cyclists will join us for parts of this trip, to ride with us for a few miles and even play golf or practice aikido too.Or all three!

This is the journey the golfing cyclistswill take from the Oarkneys to Paris

A language school in Ovingdean is closing with the loss of up to 60 jobs - a mix of full-time and part-time posts. About 20 of the staff live in and have been given a month to find somewhere else to live.

An announcement on Ovingdean Hall Colleges website said: It is with deep regret that we announce the

likely closure of Ovingdean Hall English Language School. Please note that we will not be accepting any further inquiries for bookings.

Staff were called to a meeting on Wednesday (May 13) and told that the school had no money and no bookings and would close in the second week of next month (June).

The language school, which took over the 18th-century building from Ovingdean Hall School - a school for deaf children, which closed five years ago - was founded and run by Susan Evans. The school website said: Sue has over 20 years experience in educational management and consultancy.

Labour bagged the most seats on the council and are well within their rights to form a minority council administration. But the Greens, with 11, are far from a spent force.

The challenges the new council faces are numerous. Since 2010, the government funding to the city council has been reduced by 40%. Local authorities up and down the country have borne the

brunt of cuts so far. And now we have a majority Conservative government, unfettered by the Liberal Democrats, that process will likely accelerate.

Councils can function effectively as minority administrations and a coalition isnt any more necessary this time around than it was 2011, when the Greens won the most seats.

But it would be much easier if the red and green parties could co-operate to some extent.

The citizens of Brighton and Hove sent a mixed message in the ballot box that we need to decipher. But there is a clear majority for the left-leaning, progressive, anti-Tory - take your pick parties, in terms of votes and seats.

And the Greens and Labour have common cause and some shared values.

They both oppose the evisceration of local councils and they want to see front line services protected.

There are many who dont understand why Labour and Greens cant work together for the good of the city. Many expect full-blown collaboration.

But the barriers to co-operation are not purely, or even predominantly, political.

There is genuine bad blood and animus between Labour and Green activists and councillors - as frequent bitter Twitter exchanges demonstrate.

And the stage is set for further personality clashes.

The Greens have elected the uncompromising Phlim Mac Cafferty as their leader. And with Alex Phillips also elected as one

of the deputies, its clear that the watermelon faction green on the outside, red on the inside - is in the ascendency.

Leading the council will be Labours Warren Morgan, who is something of a hate figure for Greens.

On Labours part, many members hold the Greens responsible for Labours recent

wilderness years, with no MPs in the city and the 2011 relegation to being the third party.

Its a classic Peoples Front of Judea - Judean Peoples Front situation, so loved by the left. And loathing runs deep.

But both parties need to remember they are there to do a job thats much more important than party politics. And neither will be rewarded if the ugly bickering and posturing continues.

It will be fantastically difficult to engineer a rapprochement, but business as usual will be a plague on both their houses. Just because something is hard doesnt mean it isnt worth a try.

Ongoing angry tribalism and recrimination helps only one group: the Conservatives.

And they love no sport better than watching their opponents tear strips off each other. The well-worn caricature of Brighton and Hove as the rebellious, left-leaning capital of alternative politics conveniently ignores the fact that one of the three city MPs is Conservative. And, out of 54 seats on the city council, 20 are Tory-held.

Dave Davey is a pretty male Lurcher who is almost two-years-old.He is so very special the staff named him twice!

He is a very friendly boy who is happy to greet people out-and-about. However, he prefers affection from his closest human friends only.

He does enjoy playing with other dogs but can be a little too much for some!

He loves his toys and will happily play on his own and needs to continue his training to encourage him to share.

Dave Davey needs an active home with owners who have the time to give him the attention he needs.

Walkabout is returning to the seaside city of Brighton on West Street and is all set to open on Thursday, May 21 after a 400,000 development of the old Bedrock bar site.

Big investors eye restaurant business founded in HoveInvestors are weighing up whether to take a stake in a restaurant chain that was founded in Hove six years ago.

Giggling Squid has grown rapidly since it started selling Thai tapas in Church Road, Hove, in 2009.

Now the husband and wife owners, Andy and Pranee Laurillard, are looking for funds to pay for even more new openings.

Mr Laurillard said: Were trying to raise funds for growth. We still want to retain a majority stake and we want to pay our mortgage off. We mortgaged everything for this.

As well as in Hove, they have a restaurant in Market Street, Brighton, and 13 other sites in Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Essex, Suffolk, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Bath. At least eight new openings are in the pipeline with the goal of operating a chain of 50 to 70 restaurants within five to seven years.

Their company, Giggling Restaurants, is working with accountancy firm Grant Thornton to attract investors, with an information memorandum due to be published in a few weeks time.

Trade buyers and private equity investors are showing interest, according to the Propel Info newsletter for the food and drink trade.

Propel said that Giggling Squid was already in advanced legal negotiations to acquire six more sites, five in the Home Counties and one in the Midlands.

The company is looking to raise

about 10 million. Its most recent accounts, to the end of March last year, show turnover up from 2.7 million a year earlier to 4.5 million. Operating profit fell from 282,000 to 46,000 and pre-tax profit dropped from 258,000 to 4,000 as the cost of new openings rose.

Mr and Mrs Laurillard are aiming for Giggling Squid to become Britains first national Thai restaurant chain.

They spent 150,000 on a refit of the original Hove premises last year after huge hailstones came through the roof and led to the restaurant flooding.

The Brighton and Hove restaurants are two of the best-performing in the company.

Meanwhile, Giggling Squid has hired Peter Morrison as its new operations director. Mr Morrison, who previously worked as operations director for Prezzos Chimichanga brand, lives in Brighton.

Churchill Square Shopping Centre has appointed a new director.

Mark Buchanan-Smith has significant experience in retail management as well as a strong background in operations and project management.

Before joining Churchill Square, he was retail delivery and technical services manager at Hammerson, the leading owner-manager and developer of retail property.

His appointment marks a return to Churchill Square, where he previously held the position of assistant centre director.

Mr Buchanan-Smith said: Its a fantastic time to be re-joining Churchill Square.

The centre is undergoing an exciting transformation with the Western Road frontage improvements, incorporating the new Topshop. There will be also be new names joining the list of leading retailers, such as Holland & Barrett, Kiko, and Schuh Kids.

These are exciting times for the centre and I look forward to getting to grips with my new role and contributing to the continued success of Churchill Square.

NOTICE is hereby given that Brighton & Hove City Council (the Council) proposes to make the above named Orders under the relevant sections of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, which if they come into force will amend descriptions of various parking places and loading restrictions in the traffic order to reflect correct on-site measurements and locations for the following roads:-

Sitting writing this as the sun is shining, we realise the one day of summer is nearly upon us and that means cricket. We can tell this is the case because (a) it was foggy and rainy on Monday and (b) Sussex lost.

Albion need improvement in a number areas over the summer.

Recruitment or lack of it can make or break a season before a ball has been kicked. It happened at Blackpool in 2014/15, and to a certain extent at the Albion too.

With Sami Hyypia not arriving until mid-June, many deals to bring in players werent made until the season was underway. They werent prepared early enough, and that combined with a number of other factors led to what was a season to forget.

This year, the Seagulls need to get things right, and with Chris Hughton in charge most fans will be confident he can do that. A number of positions need covering, and theres every chance he could bring back some of the players who were on-loan last season on a permanent basis.

Greg Halford and Joe Bennett would both have roles to play in defence. The former is being released by Nottingham Forest, and can play anywhere across the back four. The 25-year old Bennett will find out

whether he will feature in Tim Sherwoods plans at Aston Villa in the next few weeks.

In midfield, Albion is well covered, and Andrew Crofts return from injury will feel like gaining a new player if he can get back to full fitness. However, there is still a need to add a creative attacking player who can break down opponents in the mould of what Vicente, Andrea Orlandi and Joao Teixeira have offered in recent

years.The key area of recruitment is

up front. Our defensive record last

season wasnt awful, but our strikers just couldnt score. Whether we need a direct replacement for Leonardo Ulloa is debatable, but Hughton needs at least two new strikers and one of those must be a proven goalscorer at this level.

To make any progress, Albion must add goals to the side.

Over the course of the close season well be focusing on the people, players and games that shaped the club we know today.

One such luminary is Jimmy Case. The word legend is often used in football parlance these days, often wholly inappropriately, but in terms of this combative midfielder it is fully justified.

James Robert Case joined hometown club Liverpool from local non-league outfit South Liverpool in 1973.

While learning his trade in the reserves he continued his electrician apprenticeship and finally graced the hallowed turf of Anfield for the first time in April 1975.

Renowned for his tough-tackling, pinpoint passing, thunderbolt shot, and classic Scouse moustache, Jimmy soon become a fixture in the side under Bill Shankly, winning the league four times and lifting the European Cup when it was a knockout competition on an incredible three occasions.

Aged 27, Case was used as a makeweight in a deal that sent the cultured Mark Lawrenson

who always seems to forget he spent four years at the Goldstone Ground to work with Bob Paisley.

At this juncture, Albion were an established First Division club and in 1983, Case scored in nearly every round as Jimmy Melia, and his disco shoes, reached the FA Cup Final.

Manager Chris

Cattlin, in his infinite wisdom, decided 30-year-old Cases career was winding down and flogged him to Southampton for a paltry 30,000. The midfielder then went on and played for a further six seasons in the old First Division!

A campaign along the coast at AFC Bournemouth and Jimmy ended up back at the Goldstone, at the ripe old age of 39! His creativity remained, if his legs had slowed somewhat, and his experience made a difference to Liam Bradys side. Possibly the most memorable contribution during his second stint was towards the end of a stunning League Cup victory at Leicester City in 1994 when, with his team 2-0 ahead, Case timewasted taking a corner and was promptly sent off. He protested to the referee that he couldnt hear the whistle because he was deaf!

His much worn boots were finally hung up at 41 and just a fortnight later he replaced the sacked Brady as manager, under incredibly difficult circumstances. His short spell at the helm is largely forgettable but what a player.

A true Albion legend.
