Whatever you do inWord of deed, do all inThe name of the LordJesus.—Colossians 3:17

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEARJoshua 22-24Luke 3

FAITHFULNESS IN EVERYTHING

In August 2007, a major bridge in Minneapolis col-lapsed into the Mississippi River, killing 13 people. Inthe weeks that fallowed. It was difficult for me not tothink about that tragedy whenever crossing a bridge overa body of water.

Sometime later, I was watching an episode of Dirty Jobs on theDiscovery Channel. Host Mike Rowe was talking to an industrialpainter whose work he was trying to duplicate. “There’s really no glory in whatyou do,” he said. “No,” the painter agreed, “but it’s a job that needs to bedone.”

You see, that man paints the inside of the Mackinac Bridge towers in North-ern Michigan. His unnoticed job is done to ensure that the steel of the magnifi-cent suspended structure won’t rust from the inside out, compromising theintegrity of the bridge. Most of the 12, 000 people who cross the Straits ofMackinac each day aren’t even aware that they are depending on workers likethis painter to faithfully do their jobs well.

God also sees our faithfulness in the things we do. Though we think ourdeeds—big and small—sometimes go unnoticed, they are being observed bythe One who matters most. Whatever our task today, let’s “ do all in the nameof the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3-17).—Cindy Hess Kasper

Whatever task you find to do,Regardless if it’s big or small,Perform it well, with all your might,Because there’s One who sees it all.—Sper

Daily works takes on eternal valueWhen it is done for God.

“The governor was in Davao City all along, and itwas impossible for Kenny Dalandag, who claimed tobe a member of the private armed group of Maguin-danao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., to insist that ZaldyAmpatuan was present at a conference purportedlyheld on Nov. 22 at a compound in Shariff Aguak, Magu-indanao,” diin ni Villanueva.

“This appears to be a piece of ‘curative informa-tion’ that defies all physical laws,” ani Villanueva,“since Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan was in Davao City fromNov. 20 to 22.”

Ang “curative information” ay kinondena ng Com-mission on Human Rights (CHR) dahil ang pagha-hain ng ganitong klase ng impormasyon laban saakusado “does not cure the inherently illegal char-acter of the arrest and the detention of thosecharged.”

Umaayon si Villanueva na sa desisyon ng Court ofAppeals (CA) “that invoked the martial law–era ver-dict in Ilagan vs Enrile rendered in 1985 can be con-tested since it institutionalizes abuse and extirpatesthe culpability of law enforcers in making a case onthe basis of an illegal arrest.”

“This defies all physical laws and imbues Gov.Zaldy Ampatuan with the power of bilocality. This isa complete fabrication since the governor was inJuan Luna Subdivision in Davao City from Nov. 20 toNov. 22,” giit ni Villanueva.

“Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan flew to Manila for a meetingin Malacanang on Nov. 23 and he took his flight inDavao City ,” aniya.

The Republic Act 8941 (underSection 37) or the Flag and He-raldic Code states that: “Thenational anthem must be sungin accordance with the originalmusical arrangement of com-poser Julian Felipe, who gaveit a marching tempo. Violatorsmay be fined P5,000 to P20,000or jailed for a year.”

Dapat siguro baguhin angnasabing batas total di namansinusunod at WALANG NAPA-PARUSAHAN.

NAKAKAAWA namanang Makati City Police

Enrique “toti”

Binay at Mercadohindi maaasahan

No graduation fee policy ngDepEd, puro press release?

Hal-imbawa na lamang angUniversity of the Philip-pines (UP) karamihan samga scholar dito ay mgamayayaman, samantalangpinapaaral sila ng pera ngtaumbayan.

At kapag nakatapos na-man sa koliheyo, tambayrin dahil walang trabahongmapapasukan, yun mauu-

HABANG papalapitang May 2010 Election,

THE THREAT on my lifeand the safety of my family

has prevented us from ourregular routine: going to myhometown on weekends to en-joy our home I built for a num-ber of years and our farmbought from my earningsthrough out my career. I alsomiss breakfast ng umuusokna kaning ispesyal from myricefield, gatas ng kalabaw, pritong tuyo and panghima-gas na bayabas and hinog nakinalabaw na mangga.

I have to sacrifice thesethings until the danger poisedagainst me has been neutral-ized by law enforcement agen-cies or until the mastermindsof this heinous plot to liqui-date me and their hired hit-men have been arrested.

I have already identified themasterminds in my statementgiven out to law enforcementagents and my relatives havealready established descrip-tion of nine armed men whocame to my house to assassi-nate me.

Even with the great danger

Psalms 3 and the Armor of GodI am going through, I could gohome if I want to because I haveample police security escortsassigned to me. I chose not toplay with danger.

But the protection being ac-corded me by the Lord our Godis the source of my confidencethat I will survive this situationto continue my mission andadvocacy: to serve the massesfor whom the Lord Jesus diedfor.

I put my trust in Him as KingDavid wrote in PSALMS 3 whichreads as follows:

“ Oh Lord, how many are myfoes! How many rise up againstme! Many are saying of me, Godwill not deliver him.

But you are a shield aroundme, Oh Lord; You bestow gloryon me and lift up my head. Tothe Lord I cry aloud and He an-swers me from his holy hill.

I lied down and sleep; I wakeup again because the Lord sus-tains me. I will not fear the tensof thousands drawn up againstme on every side.

Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, Ohmy God! Strike all my enemies

on the jaw; break the teeth ofthe wicked.

From the Lord comes deliv-erance. May your blessing beon your people.”

The nine hitmen armed withpistols most likely caliber .45and long firearms most likelyArmalite rifles sent to my houseon February 28, March 1, 9 and11 will not withstand the num-ber and firepower of police es-corts assigned to protect mewhenever I am in my hometown.

This does not include almostsame number and firepower ofcombatants from the 703rd Infan-try Brigade under the commandof Col. Jose Mabanta, formerspokesman of the Armed Forcesof the Philippines, who offeredto augment my security becausethe hitmen were believed formerrebels who have become ordi-nary criminals.

But the Host of Angels led byGabriel who defeated Luciferand his army when they rebelledagainst God stand as my close-in guards and the Lord is myshield. I am strong in the Lordand in his mighty power be-cause I wear the full armor ofGod.

I have the belt of truth buck-led around my waist, the breast-plate of righteousness in place,my feet fitted with the readinessthat comes from the gospel ofpeace, holding the shield offaith, wearing the helmet of sal-vation and in my hand the swordof the Spirit which is the Wordof God.

Thanks be to God Almighty.

The Commission onElections started its effortsat modernizing or automat-ing the electoral processway back in 1992, immedi-ately after the first Syn-chronized National and Lo-cal Elections (NLE). Withthe first pilot testing of anautomated election sys-tem using the Optical MarkReader (OMR)technology in the1996 Autono-mous Region inMuslim Mindanao(ARMM) Elec-tions, to the par-tial implementa-tion in the ARMMprovinces of thesame automatedsystem in the1998 National andLocal Elections,to the halted na-tionwide imple-mentation of acentralized auto-mated countingsystem for the2004 NLE, and tothe pilot test of a

fully automated electionsystem in the 2008 ARMMElections, the COMELECcontinues to fulfill its man-date of conducting elec-tions – be it manual or au-tomated.

For the coming 2010elections, the COMELEC isset to conduct the coun-try’s first nationwide fully

WITH the series of local oil price hikes recentlyas world oil prices keep rising, there are grow-

ing voices and lobbying to demand higher fare forjeepneys, taxi and buses. While it is understand-able that movement of fares (upward or downward)should follow movement in petroleum prices, I findit irrationale that politics should be used in deter-mining when and how much, such fare movementshould happen.

It is chaotic and politically complicated if gov-ernment transport officials will always call for pub-lic hearing. Supporters and opponents to come, including those who ride on the issue so they willget good media coverage, which helps in their po-litical work and lobbying, like those running in theforthcoming elections.

It is possible to detach politics from fare setting. Here are some mechanisms that may be worthconsidering by the various stakeholders.

One, encourage corporate brands of jeepneysand taxis. Jeepney drivers and operators will be-come conscious of the corporate brand that theycarry and passengers will remember the corpo-rate brand of particular jeepney and taxi groups. Thus, some passengers will remember and avoidtaking a particular jeepney or taxi corporationwhere drivers are discourteous and road maniacsthat get into frequent accidents. And passengerswill remember those jeepney or taxi corporationswhere drivers are courteous and friendly, give theexact change, and maintain their units in good running conditions. Competition among variousjeepney and taxi corporations, not among singleunits, will give more comfort and safety to the pas-sengers.

Two, deregulate fare-setting. Some jeepney orbus lines that do not maintain their units well will beforced to charge lower fares per kilometer whilethose jeepney or bus lines that give passengerscomfortable and safe rides can charge higher fare. For instance, some bus lines can field buses withonly 40 seats instead of the usual 60 seats, andcharge minimum fare of P20 to P25 for the first 4kms. Other bus lines can dispatch crammed buses(say 70 seats or more) and charge only P10 mini-mum fare for the first 4 kms. If fares are deregulat-ed this way, some ugly and not regularly-maintainedjeepneys will either slowly vanish from the road, orthey will be forced to charge only P5 minimum farefor the first 4 kms., because passengers will haveother options to ride the more comfortable jeep-neys or buses even if they pay a higher fare.

Three, deregulate routing. Some jeepney or buslines can dispatch their vehicles near the gates ofbig private villages in the suburbs (say Novaliches,Fairview, Antipolo, Las Pinas, Bulacan, etc.) to Makati,Ortigas, Eastwood, Manila, and so on. Then peoplewill be encouraged to leave their cars in their housewhen they go to their offices or schools as they willtake only one or two rides, not four or more rides.

At the moment, people who will not bring theircars from say, a village in Fairview, Quezon City toMakati, will take 4 rides or transfers. First, tricyclefrom their village gate to the main road. Second, jeepney or air-con van to MRT station. Third, MRTto Buendia or Ayala station, and fourth, jeepney orbus or taxi to Ayala or Buendia avenue. If one iswearing proper corporate attire and/or carrying alaptop and other important documents, it is veryinconvenient and unsafe to be moving from tricy-cle to jeepney to the train and back to jeepneyagain. So even if there is heavy traffic and parkingis expensive, people are forced to bring their carsto work or school, which exacerbates road con-gestion and parking nightmares in major commer-cial and business districts. The national govern-ment, through the LTFRB, and the local governmentcreated mini-monopolies on certain routes, liketricycle monopoly and jeepney monopoly.

Just encourage competition among bus or jeep-ney lines, also taxi lines or corporations, so thatpassengers will have plenty of options. If peoplewill find that such options are safe, comfortableand economical, then they will not insist on bring-ing their cars everyday to their offices or their kids’schools. There will be less traffic congestion, lessair pollution, less parking problems, and more sav-ings for the public.

And we will avoid politicized fare setting. No needfor any public hearing, no need for any political andmedia lobbying, no need for any intervention bypoliticians and government transport officials.

Drivers and operators of jeepneys, buses andtaxi will be forced to maintain their units in goodconditions, they will be forced to become morecourteous to their passengers. Passengers neednot even complain to the government if the serviceof a particular bus or jeepney line is lousy. Passen-gers will just stop riding that particular corpora-tion and let their friends and acquaintances knowabout their bad experience. This kind of passen-ger boycott is worse than being reprimanded andpenalized by any government transport agency.

National Book Store Success StoryNATIONAL BOOK STORE, the Philippine’s larg-

est chain of bookstores is the featured successstory for today as we witness the life story of thewoman behind it, Socorro Ramos or more com-monly know to her staffs as Nanay Coring.

Her story is truly an in-spiring one as she builtthe business NationalBook Store from scratchwith a lot of challengesand hurdles as she andher husband Jose Ra-mos l i teral ly bui l t andrebui l t the businessthree t imes fromscratch. That’s the trueentrepreneurial spir i twith enough courage anddetermination.

Nanay Coring or MariaSocorro Cancio in her ear-ly years was born in Sta.Cruz, Laguna on Septem-ber 23, 1923. Ever she wasyoung, she grew up in anentrepreneurial environ-ment as one of the six chil-dren born to entrepreneurparents and grandmother. Her parents used to ran astore selling a lot of stuffsfrom slippers to clothesand a lot more while hergrandmother had a marketstall where the young So-corro got used to seeingcustomers withdrawitems on credit. Unfortu-nately, her grandmotherdid not managethe busi-ness carefully not main-taining a list of thoseitems availed on credit

Jose. Because of this act,her family was so furiousand angry that they con-sidered her dead already. It was short-lived thoughlasting only until Socorrogave birth to her twinsnamed Alfredo, who isnow the President of Na-tionalBook Store and Ben-jamin, now the Vice Pres-ident.

As mentioned above, the business NationalBook Store faced a lot ofchallenges as it was builtand rebuilt three timesfrom scratch!

First, Socorro admittedthat it was not easy to startthe business fromscratch. She recalled thatduring the Japanese occu-pation, they would look oneach and every book titleon sale. If they found ques-tionable books, theywould just tear the pagesoff leaving them useless. So instead of sellingbooks, Socorro and Josedecided to fill their book-shelves with stuffs fromcandies, soap, slippers, papers, and cigarettes.During the war, she wouldtransfer goods to hersmaller stores.

Second, when the Japa-nese were driven away, itwas now the time for theAmericans. Their NationalBook Store stall in Escoltawas damaged in the war. They recovered a bit byselling unused greetingcards and uncensoredbooks, which they had hid-den in their home.

Third, in 1945, they relo-cated their National BookStore previously located atEscolta to Avenida. Thebusiness is doing quitewell during first few post-war school years but un-fortunately, three years af-ter, a typhoon blew theroof of their store and theywere left with soakedbooks and stuffs thatwere worthless. Again, forthe third time, they haveto start from zero.

They struggled hard torebuilt National Book Storefor the third time. Butsince then, every centavothat they earned wereused to buy the lot wherethe Rizal Avenue Branchof NationalBook Storestands to this day.

Today, National BookStore is considered asthe largest chain ofbookstores in the coun-try. They have venturedinto several businessesalready such as a conve-nience-type storenamed NBS Book Ex-press, publishing com-panies named Cacho-Hermanos printingpress, Anvil Books andCapitol-Atlas Publishing, anotherbook storenamed Powerbooks, music store named Tow-er Records and MusicOne, Gift Gate, the homeof Hello Kitty and Swatch, and a department storenamed Crossings de-partment store. Socor-ro’s children and rela-tives ran all these.

Socorro Ramos’ l ifeand success story andthe challenges that shefaced with her busi-ness National BookStore business wasanother inspiring story. In fact, i t was recog-nized when she waschosen as the Ernstand Young’s PhilippineEntrepreneur of theYear in 2005.

Today, at the age of 85,Socorro Ramos or Nan-ay Coring acts as theGeneral Manager of Na-tional Book Store. Andshe told that the corevalues in her successare to keep learning, being actively involvedin the business, beingable to read changes andact on them immediate-ly, and most of all, nevergive up!

pack of cigarettes leverag-ing her efforts. Sincethen, the young Socorrowas on her way to becomean entrepreneur as earlyas 10 years old!

Immediately after grad-uating from Arellano HighSchool, she worked as asalesgirl at Goodwill BookStore owned by the familyof her present husbandJose Ramos. Socorro’sbrother Manuel marriedone of the Ramos childrenand in 1940, they neededsomeone to look after thebranch they set up alongEscolta Street, on theground floor of PanciteriaNational.Jose Ramos tookover it and asked Socorroto work on him in thatbranch. They renamed itas National Book Store.

Their love story beganbut her parents wereagainst with it as Socor-ro was just 18 years oldback then. She was toldto stay in the province tokeep away from marry-ingJose Ramos . But asthey say, true love neverdies, the young Socorrowith just 11 pesos in herpocket, struggled to wentback to Manila to marry

and their business fell. After that event, they

went to Manila. Her moth-er struggled hard to feedsix children and the youngSocorro considered her-self as lucky if she gotmoney from her mother. Her elder sisters helpedthe family by working in acandy and bubble gum fac-tory and she spent hersummer doing summerjobs too. In one instance, young Socorro was hiredto peel off the paper usedin old cigarettes so that itcan be reuse to make newfresh cigarette sticks. Shereceived 5 centavos perpack of cigarettes. But theyoung Socorro started herentrepreneurial skills andhired kids and their neigh-borhood paying them 5centavos for every two-

MORIONES FESTIVAL is a very popular festival inthe Philippines. The festival is the most unique festi-val in the world. The Moriones festival is celebratedin Marinduque every Holy Week. The festival depictsthe martyrdom of St. Longinus. It was believed thatSt. Longinus, a Roman soldier who pierced JesusChrist’s side on the crucifixion.

One of the most colorful festivals celebrated inthe island of Marinduque is the Moriones Festival.Morion means “mask” or “visor,” a part of the medi-eval Roman armor which covers the face. Moriones,on the other hand, refers to the masked and cos-tumed penitents who march around the town forseven days searching for Longinus. This week-longcelebration starts on Holy Monday and culminateson Easter Sunday when the story of Longinus is re-enacted in pantomime. This is a folk-religious festi-val that re-enacts the story of Longinus, a Romancenturion who was blind in one eye.

The Moriones are the Marinduqueños in colorfulcostumes and masks replicating the garb of Romansoldiers. The act of donning this attire and roamingthe streets in town in the heat of the sun is doneduring Lent as a form of yearly penance by nativesof Marinduque. Many practitioners are local farm-ers or fishermen. The artistic and colorful attiresand masks worn are unique expressions of folk artand local ingenuity.

The practice originated from the town of Mogpog aclosely knit community which continues to establishitself as a religious center in the province. Here thepractice having been made an integral part of Lentenchurch rituals for over a hundred years, has under-gone very little change.

Are you ready for your wedding?

PREPARING for a wed-ding is like walking

through a minefield; youdon’t know who’s goingto blow up in anger. Anda lot of these misunder-standings are so unnec-essary. Arm yourselfwith a bit of wedding eti-quette knowledge andavoid the pifalls thatcould mar the best dayof your life walkingthrough a minefield; youdon’t know who’s goingto blow up in anger. Anda lot of these misunder-standings are so unnec-essary. Arm yourselfwith a bit of wedding eti-quette knowledge andavoid the pitfalls thatcould mar the best dayof your life.

Hide all visible bodypiercing and tattoos withlong-sleeved clothing. Beas conservative as pos-sible when meeting yourfuture in-laws for thefirst time. Parents havea tendency to judge youby the first impression.

If you fear the unmistak-able beeping sound inter-rupting your exchange ofvows then ask the masterof ceremonies to kindlyrernind invited guests toswitch off all electronicdevices minutes beforeyou walk down the aisle.Another option is to printthe request directly intoprogramme, either at thebottom of the page or onthe back because any-thing more prominentmight be construed as be-ing obsessive; subtlety isalways better.

If you have reason to be-lieve your ex is still roman-

tically interested in you, don’t bother inviting him tothe wedding. Do this out ofrespect for your fiance. Butif you and your ex have re-mained friends, then by allmeans include him in yourhappy occasion. It would bea nice gesture to invite yourex’s new wife/girlfriend aswell.

When addressing yourinvite cards, be sure to notinclude the children’sname if you want yourwedding to be an adults-only affair. But some par-ents may call to ask if theycan bring their kids. It’s asticky situation that must

be handled tactfully. Ex-plain that you want to keepit a strictly no-kids affair, but in the same conversa-tion, add that their entirefamily is invited to a bar-becue a month after thewedding. This is so theydon’t get the impressionthat you don’t like theirchildren.

Walking the bride downthe aisle is an honour tra-ditionally reserved for thefather, In the case of brideswho have a father and astepfather, she can haveeither, or both men, walkher down the - if she isclose to both of them. As afather or stepfather of thebride, please accept gra-ciously whatever decisionthe bride makes. Forbrides whose fathers areno longer with them, thenext nearest and dearestmale (not necessarily afamily member either) inher life should give heraway.

If, from past experience, you find the bouquet tossan embarrassing and in-sulting ritual for singles, then don’t do it. There’s nolaw engraved in stone thatsays you must follow tra-dition - create your own.

One of your three bestfriends is hoping that shegets the job as bridesmaidbut you have alreadypromised it to someoneelse. How do you tell herthe bad news? Take herout for coffee and gentlybreak the news to her andbe honest. Perhaps, cre-ate another role for herlike manning the receptiontable. But do let her knowthat she is still one of yourclosest friends and thatwill never change.

If you know the weddingcouple’s parents and in-laws are the conservativesort, refrain from going toofar with playing aisle practi-cal jokes on the couple dur-ing the ceremony, Also, ifyou’re going up to say some-thing about them, avoid allforms of lewd remarks.

Have safe cosmetic enhancements and surgeryA GOOD DOCTOR priori-

tizes safety as being para-mount for the patient. Thepatient’s discernment inassessing the doctor isimportant, they must beaware that their safety isnot breached nor routinelyapproached.

“There are doctors whodo not have the completeand proper training to prac-tice cosmetic surgery.Worst, there are thosewho have no medical back-ground or nurses withtheir prolong assistance tothe cosmetic surgeon, dosurgery themselves. Thepatients pay the high priceof being a victim of thesescrupulous people, result-ing to lost of life or physi-cal deformities,” says Dr.Jane P. Enriquez.

Dr. Enriquez, president ofthe Philippine Academy ofCosmetic Surgery is alsoone of the “Top 100 BestCosmetic Surgeons of theWorld” awardee and “2010Dangal ng Bayan Achieve-ment Award for CosmeticMedicine” awardee. Andbeing among the few pio-neers and mentor of mostand upcoming cosmeticsurgeons, she was ac-claimed in the industry asthe “Mother of CosmeticSurgery.”

At the JJ & J 888 Rejuvina-tion Surgicenter, Dr. Enriqu-

ez heightens concerns onsafe, less or minimally inva-sive and acceptable surgi-cal results on patients.

Cosmetic surgery is sur-gery, and it should not beequated to a beauty parlorvisit because according toDr. Enriquez, any operationshave some degree of inher-ent risks and life-threaten-ing complications. Onlyboard certified, competentand well-trained surgeonsby a recognized cosmeticsurgeon with proven trackrecord of successful oper-ations should perform theprocedures in the properlocation and environment.

She stressed the impor-tance of aesthetic sense andjudgment in assessing pa-tients to maximize accept-able cosmetic results fittedfor their personality andneeds. In doing the refine-ments of patient the artistictalent of the doctor is veryimportant to prevent the ar-tificial look after a proce-dure. She is credited as adistinct doctor with a “virtu-oso touch” in cosmetic en-hancements because of theunnoticeable, natural look-ing results of her works —each one a masterpiece.

A plastic surgeon cannotbe mistaken as a cosmeticsurgeon. These are twodifferent disciplines andspecialization. While some

plastic surgeons are alsointo cosmetic surgery, theyare for a more in-depth re-construction of abnormaldisfigurement such ascongenital defects, injuriesor lost of limbs from acci-dents and similar situa-tions.

“Cosmetic surgery is aspecialty by itself and itsmain purpose is rejuvena-

tion and enhancement ofwhat is already normalfor a pleasing personal-ity and improved rela-tionships with their part-ners,” says Dr. Enriquez.

Panay ang good time.

***SPEAKING of

Pero, what makes Diva moreendearing to the viewers are thesongs performed in the showthat are truly close to the heartsof Filipinos.

Diva, kaya lalongn a g - i - e n j o yang mgamanonood.

I s a n g

We congratulate Vicky

Pero sa kabila nito, we are anticipating theshowing of the movie.
