On ScreenMore than 3,500 films were submitted to the 2015 Nashville Film Festival. Our Artistic Director, Brian Owens, his programming assistants, volunteer pre-screeners and programming interns put in thousands of hours of viewing to hone those films down to the final selection. Taken as a whole, these films represent the state of the art of film and reflect a multitude of views of the world. Some will challenge you. Some will entertain you. Some may transform you. A movie may never directly change the world - but it might just change the way you look at it.

United Kingdom / Italy, 85 m.

Thursday, April 16 5:15 PMFriday, April 17 3:45 PM

In 1921, DH Lawrence and his wife, Frieda von Richthofen, journeyed to Sardinia, where they spent the winter travelling. He wrote a book about his experiences and now Mark Cousins retraces his footsteps, armed with a camcorder and an inexhaustible reserve of curiosity. The film is conceived partly as a letter to Lawrence – or ‘Bert’, as he calls him, a detail that’s typical of the film’s inviting sense of conversational intimacy. A lively chronicle of Cousins’ own trip through Sardinia, the film is a bracing reflection on a dizzying range of subjects.

Lance Grayden, a veteran coach who left the league years ago when his daughter moved to an elite softball club team and then college, has returned to give something back to the community. Assuming he’d be coaching a 16-and-under team, he is instead saddled with a 10-and-under team of inexperienced players. Not only is he forced to go back to the basics and teach the fundamentals of the game to the little girls, half of whom would rather be in the dugout eating snacks, but he also faces the greater challenge of riding herd over their over-eager, overly ambitious and entirely delusional parents whose ridiculous behavior is more suited to five-year-olds than adults.

From distributing records out of his ‘48 Packard to establishing TK Records as the largest independent label of the 1970s, Henry Stone’s journey is iconic. His funky, eight-track studio and chart topping family of artists, including KC and the Sunshine Band, led to the original Miami Sound and the birth of Disco. When his empire collapsed on a baseball field in Chicago in 1979, Henry didn’t miss a beat launching Miami Freestyle. Turning personal tragedy into an opportunity to empower others, Henry represents the dramatic arc of the record business, from its inception through the digital age.

Jordyn Ames, a discontent night shift clerk, has a bizarre run in with a late night patron. Pre-Screening Committee

Screenplay Reading Committee

These individuals viewed and read the nearly 4,800 movies and screenplays that were entered to the 2015 Nashville Film Festival. The group consists of members, film scholars, actors, writers, directors, cinematographers and people from all walks of life. Their recommendations are then passed up to festival programming staff who craft the final selection of films and screenplays presented at this year’s festival.

Begun in 2014, the Lipscomb University Prize of the Ecumenical Jury rewards the film that best explores lives of faith, religion and spirituality on screen. Last year’s winner, Ida, directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, went on to win the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film.

This year’s selections -- through both narrative and documentary films -- explore how faith inspires charity, education, expansion of world views and brings divergent cultures together.

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently.
