Ring the bell! In 1996 U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Irve Le Moyne, a patient with head and neck cancer, installed a brass bell in the Radiation Treatment Center at MD Anderson. It is now a tradition for patients to ring the bell on their the last day of treatment.

The Right Treatment

Life-Saving, Organ-Preserving TreatmentRadiation therapy is a essential part of breast cancer treatment for many women. Including radiation in breast cancer treatment, when needed, can reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer.

Expertise Matters• Our faculty routinely review radiation treatment plans from outside

hospitals that are seeking to improve their performance. Last year, almost half of the cases submitted to MD Anderson for review did not meet recommended guidelines.

• Our entire team specializes in the use of radiation for breast treatment. In Breast Radiation Oncology, our doctors and radiation physicists treat only breast cancer. Expert teams review treatment plans for every patient to ensure that those plans are the best and safest for each individual patient. Our physics team has many years of experience in ensuring that radiation is delivered precisely, accurately and safely. Our nurses, physician assistants, dosimetrists, and therapists are all established experts in breast radiation therapy who have encountered virtually every exception to every rule.

• We proudly publish our outcomes, our treatment planning techniques and our side effects profiles. We consistently show that our approach provides the highest quality care.

Six Short Weeks, Maybe Less• Daily radiation treatments typically take an hour or less door-to-door.

• Some patients who have early-stage breast cancer treated with a lumpectomy may be able to have treatments that last one week, three weeks or four weeks.

• Some patients with inflammatory breast cancer can receive two treatments per day for 4 1/2 weeks.

The Right Technology

The Right Technology for the Right Patient

From the Start: • Our extra-large CT simulators allow us extra room to put patients in the best

positions for treatment planning.

• Reducing risk to the heart:

– We evaluate every patient with cancer of the left breast for their ability to hold their breath during treatment, which moves the heart away from the treatment field and minimizes the risk of heart disease.

– We have successfully treated more than 4,000 patients with this “breath-hold” technique to move the heart away from the treatment field. Techniques like these allow us to avoid exposing the heart to radiation.

– At MD Anderson, the chance of a major heart event caused by radiation to a lumpectomy cavity in a left breast is <0.2%.

Reaching Challenging Targets Safely: • Our physicists have fine-tuned our treatment machines to allow doctors

to choose the type of radiation that is a perfect fit for your treatment. This flexibility is unique to MD Anderson radiation.

• The MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center delivers another form of radiation and protons which can be safer to use for tumors in some locations.

CT scan shows the position of the heart during normal breathing (grey) and during a deep-breath-hold (red).

Taking a deep breath moves the heart to the side (dotted line), moving it out of the path of radiation for breast cancer treatment.

Parking and Housing

Parking is free for all radiation treatment appointments. If you need radiation, information about free parking during treatment will be provided at your initial visit.

Information on housing is available from center staff to assist out-of-town patients in planning their radiation treatments.
