Breakthroughs in Healthcare Diversity Symposium Creating Patient, Clinician, & Technology Networks
Presented By
The Breakthroughs in Healthcare Diversity Symposium:
Creating Patient, Clinician, & Technology Networks is an
educational symposium focusing specifically on the
development of a collaborative diversity and inclusion
healthcare network to solve the challenges surrounding the
delivery of quality healthcare to underserved and vulnerable
patient groups. The goal of establishing this network is to
connect patients, clinicians, researchers, and industry
professionals who are passionate about diversity and inclusion
and serving underserved patient populations, specifically racial
and ethnic minorities, women, lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender (LGBT) persons, and vulnerable patient
populations of lower socioeconomic status. The educational
symposium focuses specifically on the latest trends, challenges,
opportunities, and best practices of implementing strategies
and tactics to make healthcare and the life sciences more
diverse and inclusive, as well as understand how to better serve
diverse patient groups. Attendees will learn the newest insights
and ideas, discuss practical solutions, and meet new industry
and marketplace colleagues. The symposium, which takes place
in San Francisco on 1/10/17, will feature keynote speakers,
educational panel discussions, breakout sessions, and
networking.

How Diverse and Inclusive are
Executive leader positions in the U.S.?
Dear Healthcare Professionals, Clinicians, Technologists, and Patients,
As the President of Center for Healthcare Innovation and a health
sector teacher, researcher, and scholar, I invite you to the
“Breakthroughs in Healthcare Diversity Symposium: Creating Patient,
Clinician, & Technology Networks”. Over the last six years, we have led
a similar symposium in Chicago, our Diversity, Inclusion, & Life
Sciences Symposium, and we have learned that the health sector still
faces major diversity and inclusion challenges. Some of the figures and
statistics shown here are alarming, and they indicate just how much
progress our industry must make to serve diverse patient groups and
reflect that diversity within our organizations.
The “Breakthroughs in Healthcare Diversity Symposium”, along with
CHI’s other healthcare diversity educational programs, aims to be the
leading annual, collaborative symposium for health sector
professionals, patients, clinicians, technologists, entrepreneurs, patient
advocates, policymakers, researchers, scientists, academics, and service
providers to discuss diversity and inclusion in the health sector. The
symposium focuses specifically on the latest trends, challenges,
opportunities, and best practices of implementing strategies and tactics
to make these industries more diverse and inclusive, as well as
understand how to better serve different patient groups. Attendees will
learn the newest insights and ideas, discuss practical solutions, and
meet industry and marketplace colleagues. We invite you to explore our
site and contact us with any questions or thoughts.
Please visit chisite.org. for more information. We hope to see you in
San Francisco on January 10, 2017.
Warmest Regards,
Dr. James J. Gillespie, PhD, JD, MPA

Agenda
Addressing Healthcare Disparities in Clinical Research & Comparative Effectiveness
Research for Underserved Patient Groups Panel Discussion 2016 was the FDA’s “Year of Diversity in Clinical Trials.” According to the FDA, African-Americans represent 12 % of
the U.S. population but only 5% of clinical trial participants. Additionally, Hispanics represent 18% of the U.S.
population but only 1% percent of clinical trial participants. In a country where minorities are estimated to
outnumber white Americans by 2044, the inclusion of individuals of varied races, ethnicities, ages, gender, and sexual
orientations in clinical research can help prevent disparities in the evaluation of potential new medicines.
Historically, racial and ethnic minorities, women, the elderly, and the LGBT community have been underrepresented
in clinical trials and comparative effectiveness research (CER). Clinical research provides crucial information on
whether new drugs and treatments are safe and effective, and it is vital for researchers and the entire health sector to
ensure that research participants are representative of the larger U.S. population. Additionally, as newer concepts
such as precision medicine and biomarkers move to the forefront of modern medicine, diversity in clinical research
will have even greater implications. This panel brings together a leading group of researchers, patients, and clinical
trial experts to discuss the obstacles to clinical trials, as well as how to make the clinical research ecosystem as diverse
and inclusive as possible.
Chief Diversity Officers Roundtable According to a recent report, there are only five African-American CEOs at the nation's 500 largest companies. And a
Forbes report last year indicated that 28% of Fortune 500 firms list just one female director, despite that studies have
shown that it takes at least three female board members to achieve a critical mass for enhancing governance and
performance. Moreover, a recent Harvard Business Review article reports that without diversity in organizational
leadership, women are 20% less likely than white men to win endorsement for their ideas, people of color are 24%
less likely, and the LGBT community is 21% less likely, all of which stifle the creative and innovative process. Given
the rapidly shifting U.S. demographic trends among U.S. patients, it is more important than ever for healthcare
organizations to reflect diversity and inclusion within the organization. Attracting and recruiting the best and
brightest diverse talent can help organizations drive innovation and new thinking. However, many organizations face
a myriad of challenges when attempting to achieve a desired level of diversity within their organizations. This panel
features a group of Chief Diversity Officers and senior executives who will discuss the challenges, opportunities, and
best practices of attracting, retaining, and promoting minorities, women, and other underrepresented human talent,
as well as how their organizations are adapting to shifting demographics among U.S. patients.
What Role Does Technology Play in Healthcare Diversity? Panel Discussion The first two panels explore and highlight some of the diversity and inclusion challenges facing health sector
organizations as they attempt to better serve diverse patient groups as well as create diverse and inclusive cultures
within these organizations. Additionally, technological advances are dramatically transforming healthcare and the
way that care is delivered. A recent PwC Health Research Institute Analysis highlights this shift toward technology:
32% of consumers now have at least one health app on their mobile device, up from just 16% in 2013, and there are
now over 165,000 health-related apps available for mobile devices. Moreover, 72% of consumers age 18-44 prefer to
use telehealth services, such as video conferencing, to consult with a mental health provider rather than a traditional
in-person visits. Health sector organizations are leveraging the power of data analytics to determine patterns and
make smarter, more informed decisions in a timelier manner. This panel will bring together leading healthcare and
technology experts, futurists, and data professionals to explore how healthcare and technology companies can use
technology to make health sector organizations more diverse, help these organizations better serve diverse patient
groups, and utilize the intersection of technology and healthcare to establish patient-powered networks.
