Welcome to St James Park for this Round 3 FA Trophy tie against fellow National League North side Salford City. We extend a warm welcome to Salford’s officials, players and supporters and we wish you a safe trip home after the game.

The league is the wallpaper on the walls of the season, the cup competitions the framed photographs and pictures on them that we so enjoy. With the FA Cup adventure behind us and the Hillier Cup semi-final now way ahead in February, it is the turn of the FA Trophy.

Last season’s Trophy run to the quarter-finals saw us on the road in every round, not a home draw in sight! We travelled to Mickleover Sport then AFC Fylde followed by Stockport County and Wealdstone before a first trip to York City beckoned and 1-0 exit to the eventual winners at Wembley. So a

home draw is most welcome. Indeed the name of Brackley Town was the very first name out of the bag in the draw followed of course by our visitors Salford. So no nail-biting wait and with National League teams coming in next time around this is certainly the plum tie of the round, one of six all-National North ties.

Next Saturday we host Stockport County before a trip to FC United the following week. Should today’s game finish level after 90 minutes it goes to a replay in midweek. Before then we have what promises to be a big game to look forward to.

Thank you for coming along this afternoon. Get behind the boys!

Best wishes

Welcome to St James Park for this afternoon’s FA Trophy game and welcome to Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley and their Salford team.Bringing two of the top teams together from National League North makes this a high profile tie and one that I am sure players on both sides will relish. We put together a good run of results before losing last Saturday at Bradford Park Avenue. On the day we did not play well and did not deserve anything from the game. There will be no excuses from me or the players. It is no surprise that Avenue have moved into the top group of teams in the league table because they have experience and some good players. We have put in two strong training sessions this week to get that result out of our system and to be ready for today’s game.

We have had a few injuries and a suspension in recent weeks. We have coped well with this and the players coming in have done a good job. The Hillier Cup match was a good opportunity for some players to get competitive game time but I will be looking at possible loans to ensure everyone stays sharp and ready to step in as necessary. Greg Kaziboni has already started a loan spell at Biggleswade Town and is making an impact. Khris Oti of course is playing with The Saints and has been on the score-sheet already. It is a squad game and every player has their part to play. Back to today’s game. Thank you for getting behind the players this afternoon. I am expecting a tough test and a good match.Best wishes

Kevin

Crucial moments

Brackley Town 2 Gainsborough Trinity 0

Two goals of high quality won the game for Brackley when it appeared this well contested game might edge to a goal-less conclusion. The result extended Saints’ winning run to four games and narrowed the gap to second-placed Harrogate to two points.

The home side started well. Shane Byrne’s low cross flashed across the face of goal needing just a touch and Aaron Williams headed over from Glenn Walker’s corner in just the first few minutes but then the game became bogged down as Brackley struggled to break down a stubborn defence.

Trinity‘s Liam King almost stole in to put his side in front on the stroke of half-time but his shot was superbly blocked by Brackley captain Gaz Dean.

The second period opened up a little but frustration was beginning to creep into the home side’s play as the visitors stood firm. It was not

until the 75th minute that Williams put his side ahead with a solo goal, firing in from 25 yards to maintain his red hot scoring streak of scoring in nine successive league and FA Cup games.

Substitute Jimmy Armson, Adam Walker and Shane Byrne combined delightfully just minutes later to set up Armson who doubled the lead. Both sides had a chance to score in the dying minutes. Matt Lowe’s shot was well saved while Trinity’s Michael Jacklin saw his header go just wide from an added time corner.

“It happened time and again last season, teams coming here to frustrate us,” said Kevin Wilkin. “They came to defend but we found what we needed today, something we haven’t always managed to do. Aaron [Williams] came inside and struck a terrific first goal for us and then it was a super second goal. Shane Byrne was fantastically unselfish and it’s moments like that that are crucial in a tight game.”

this afternoon we welcomeSalford City

The club was formed in 1940 as Salford Central. We progressed steadily through local leagues until, in 1963, we stepped up to the Manchester League and changed the name to Salford Amateurs. Nicknamed “The Ammies”, the club became a real force in the 1970s winning the Lancashire Amateur Cup in ‘73,’75 and ’77. All the Manchester County Cups and the League title came our way and in one season of note seven major trophies sat with pride in our trophy cabinet. The ultimate prize –Champion of Champions – was secured in 1977.In 1979, after a decade of success, we took our first major step towards securing our status in non-league football.

The players and committee took on the task of restoring our present Moor Lane ground. The pitch was in poor condition, the main stand roofless and derelict. Working all hours the challenge was met head on and Moor Lane was passed as acceptable for entry to the Cheshire League in 1980.

When the North West Counties League was formed in 1982 with the amalgamation of the Lancashire Combination and the Cheshire League the foresight of upgrading the ground bore fruit and Salford seized the opportunity of joining football’s

non-league pyramid. The transition hasn’t always been easy but with the re-organisation into two divisions we eventually took our place in Division One.

Salford appeared in the Manchester County Premier Cup Final at Old Trafford in 1989 and the same season saw floodlights installed at Moor Lane and the dropping of our Amateurs tag to become Salford City.

In 1990 we celebrated our fiftieth year by entering the F.A.Cup for the first time and received national exposure on BBC Television’s Grandstand’s “Road to Wembley “ feature. Unfortunately relegation followed the same season.

With League restructuring in 1992 we regained our place in Division One and with ex Manchester United starlet Billy Garton in charge we finished ninth, our highest league position.

The following years have seen improvement on this and under Andy Brown we finished third (on goal difference) missing out on promotion only in the last few games as well as again reaching the final of the Premier Cup.

The last few seasons, under manager Gary Fellows, saw the club establish itself as one of the dominant sides in the Vodkat North West Counties League having won the League

12 | Brackley Town FC

Challenge Cup in 2006 and just missing out on promotion in 2007 with virtually an all local squad.

At the end of season 2007-08 the club’s immediate ambition of stepping up to the Unibond League was finally achieved when a second promotion spot from the Vodkat League became available.

During the following seasons Salford’s place in the fourth level of the English non-league game was consolidated with chairman Darren Quick, Rhodri Giggs, Darren Sheridan & Andy Heald having spells in the Moor Lane managerial hot-seat.

During the 2012-2013 season early form was good under ex-professional Sheridan but he left the club in January and a disappointing second half of the campaign finished with Salford occupying sixteenth place in the league. Under the guidance of Andy Heald Salford also reached the final of the Manchester Premier Cup but a stirring comeback against Mossley at Stockport’s Edgelely Park ground was not enough as the Lilywhites triumphed in a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw.

Phil Power arrived as manager at the start of the 2013-2014, initially in partnership with Barry Massay but it was to be events off the pitch that dominated the campaign. Club president Dave Russell was contacted by five members of Manchester United’s ‘Class of 92’ side with the aim of exploring a possible takeover at Moor Lane. Having enjoyed stellar international careers, the five – Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville & Paul Scholes – are determined to ‘put something back’ into local football and wanted to do so in an area that

reflected their early training and development. Salford City fitted the bill and the takeover was ratified by the club’s committee and progressed over the summer.

After a good start to the 2014-2015 season form dipped in the run up to Christmas and Power was replaced by Ramsbottom United managerial duo Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.

The new managers revitalised the club’s promotion push and fifteen wins from seventeen games secured the Evo-Stik League First Division North title Twelve months later promotion was secured to the National League North when Workington were beaten 3-2 at Moor Lane in the play-off final, with Jordan Hulme’s winner coming just four minutes from time.

The Ammies had already made club history during the 2015-2016 season, beating Notts County in the first round of the FA Cup and taking Hartlepool United to a replay in the second with all three games televised live.

The club’s first season at National League North level ended in play-off semi-final defeat, with Salford losing to FC Halifax Town on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

During the summer of 2017 the club turned professional and an exciting new chapter in Salford City’s history is about to begin.

The Main MenSalford City

Born in Auckland, New Zealand Max moved to the U.K. at a young age and started his senior career with Buckingham Town.

Oxford United soon spotted the young keeper’s potential and he signed a professional contract for them in 2012. Loan spells with Banbury United, Nuneaton Town, Barnet and Southport followed before Max moved north to sign for Carlisle United in 2016.

Following Jay Lynch’s departure to AFC Fylde the New Zealand Under-20 and Under-23 international accepted an offer to make the move to Moor Lane as the club’s new first choice keeper.

Tall defender who was an integral part of the Solihull Moors side that won the National League North title in 2016.

Started out with Romulus and Redditch United before moving to Gresley where he was selected for the Evostik League First Division South’s team of the season. That fine form earned a move to Solihull Moors on 2013.

He carried that form on at Moor Lane and after a great first season with Salford City was named as the supporters’ player-of-the-year as well as being selected in the National League North team of the season.

Who to look out for

Highly rated young midfielder Mark started out with Burton Albion then joined Northern Premier League Ilkeston at the end of the 2015-2016 season.

In November of 2016 he made the move to National League North side Alfreton Town and was a regular member of their first team for the rest of the season.

After a compensation deal was reached with Alfreton Mark moved to Moor Lane during the summer of 2017 and the skilful midfielder will certainly be one to watch over 2017-2018 campaign.

The 26-year-old Salford born forward started out with Manchester City’s academy side. Two years later he joined Rochdale where he made 3 first team appearances.

A move to Salford City followed and Jack scored sixteen goals in twenty-six appearances before signing for Altrincham.

He was signed by League Two Morecambe in January 2012. Following one hundred and twenty league appearances for the Shrimpers (with 36 goals scored) Jack moved to Blackpool in 2015. Jack was released during the summer of 2017 and accepted an offer to sign a two-year contract with his home city club.

FA Cup Final 23rd April 1927

Cardiff City 1 (Ferguson 75 mins.) Arsenal 0

Cardiff City : Farquharson, Nelson, Watson, Keener (capt), Sloan, Hardy, Curtis, Irving, Fergu-son, L.Davies, McLachlan

Arsenal : Lewis, Parker, Kennedy, Baker, Butler, John, Hulme, Buchan (captain), Brain, Blythe, Hoar

Referee : W.F. Bunnell (Preston) Attendance : 91.206 Receipts £23,113

The MatchIt seems faintly ridiculous now that the Cup Final is staged in Wales, but much was made of the Cup leav-ing England when Cardiff City upset the odds to beat Arsenal at Wembley in 1927. City, then an established top division club, had lost narrowly to Sheffield United two years previously, so they could claim that it was their turn for the decisive stroke of luck.

That came in 75 minutes when Hugh Ferguson, a pro-digious goalscorer north and south of the border, put in a shot which the Arsenal goalkeeper Lewis looked to have gathered comfortably. However, with Len Davies in close attendance, the ball squirmed out of the grasp of the kneeling custodian, and the ball trickled over the goal-line.

The history books credit Ferguson with the goal, but it is debatable whether Davies touched it before it crossed the line – yet there is no doubt the decisive intervention came from the hapless goalkeeper. Some

blame was placed on a brand new, and shiny, goal-keeping jersey, and so Arsenal goalkeepers took the field in all future Finals clad in jerseys which had been worn previously.

Arsenal, pre-Chapman, enjoyed the bulk of possession and monopolised the goal-scoring chances, but a mixture of resolute defending by the strong Cardiff defence, and profligate finishing, meant that the game was decided by Lewis’ blunder. The sublime irony was that the Arsenal goalkeeper was himself a Welshman.

King George V presented the Cup to Fred Keenor, the great Cardiff and Wales captain, and few present realised that this would represent the pinnacle of the Ninian Park club’s achievements ; or that a decade of Arsenal domination of English football was about to dawn.

The Programme The respective clubs’ colours of red and blue formed the front cover, with fixture details overprinted in black – but not the names of the competing clubs, a curious feature of many pre-war final programme covers. That was left for the page 3 frontispiece, which featured a photograph of the club and both sides of a medal. A full page portrait of the FA’s Patron, the King, was on page 5 and the Programme of Music was printed on page 7. Chas. Cooper wrote “The History of the Cup” opposite head and shoulder portraits of Mr J.C. Clegg, President, and Mr F.J. Wall, Secretary, of the Football Association, both gentlemen sporting rather impressive moustaches.

An account of how both teams reached the final was on page 11 and the teams, in 2-3-5 formation and numbered (Arsenal 1 to 11 ; Cardiff 12 to 22) were on the centre pages. In the second half of the programme, each team had a page-and-half of pen pictures, and a page of head and shoulder photographs. The non-ad-vertising content concluded with a photograph of the match referee, Mr Bunnell.

The majority of pages were taken by advertisements, with virtually every page bearing a top or bottom message about the Daily News. Mazda Electric Lamps were on the inside front page, Lakerol Bronchial Pastilles (endorsed by players Andy Wilson and Jimmy Dimmock) and Boxing at Holland Park Hall were on the inside back page. The back page featured Miss Kitty McKane who would give free Lawn Tennis lessons daily in the London Daily News.

Other advertisers were the Hearts of Oak Benefit Society, London Theatres, Sunripe cigarettes, Watney’s Ale and Reid’s Stout, Player’s Cigarettes (“Trainers do not object. They know what is good for them.”) William Younger’s Scotch Ale and Mullard, the Master (Radio) Valve.

Twin Tower MemoriesJohn Litster, The author of the book “A History and Guide to Football Programmes” writes here for “The Red & White” and brings us a series of articles in which famous matches in Wembley’s history are remembered by their programmes, which remain popular with modern collectors.

Moment from captain Dean sets Saints on their way

Brackley Town 4 Southport 0

Brackley ran out comfortable winners in this first ever meeting with former league club Southport but it could have been a different game had the visitors capitalised on early chances. As it was two goals in each half and another clean sheet secured a fifth successive league win to move Saints into second place in the table.

Southport’s Jordan Hallam brought a fine save from Danny Lewis after 25 minutes to keep the game goal-less as Saints were slow off the mark in this midweek kick-off on a murky, dank evening. Dan Cockerline twice had chances to put his side ahead either side of the half hour mark when through on goal and his deflected effort earning only a corner before his header was wide when well placed.

Within a minute Brackley were ahead as Gaz Dean bundled the ball in from Shane Byrne’s free-kick, a moment that changed the game. Curtis Jones tugged at Lee Ndlovu conceding a 44th minute penalty confidently converted by Aaron Williams to give Brackley an unexpected two goal half-time lead.

In the second half Ndlovu twice had shots saved or deflected wide before Williams’ header from Ellis Myles’ cross was pushed onto the cross-bar by stand-in keeper Iain Turner. The pick of the goals came on the hour courtesy of Lee Ndlovu’s cross that Williams slid in for his second goal of the game to maintain a remarkable record of scoring in every one of his last ten league and FA Cup matches.

Substitute Matt Lowe created the final goal of the game in added time. Winning the ball inside his own half Lowe drove 40 yards before releasing Shane Byrne who picked his spot for his fourth goal of the season.

“It could have been different,” said Kevin Wilkin. “We were not at our best in the first half and they had chances to go ahead and it needed good work by Danny [Lewis]. Once we got going we scored good goals. It was always going to be a tough test on a Tuesday evening after Saturday’s hard fought win and so it turned out. We travel to Bradford Park Avenue next with an early kick-off and that will be another challenging fixture as they are going well.”

not much in it!

Highworth Town 1 Brackley Town Saints 0

This was the second meeting of the season for Highworth Town and Brackley Town Saints and this game proved to be a carbon-copy of the first one played at St James Park back in August with Highworth Town again winning thanks to a Callum Mcghee-Parsons first half goal. After two rather disappointing first half performances against Binfield and Highmoor Ibis Saints manager Gordon Kille restored attacking midfielder Matt Johnson and striker Josh Bowden to his starting line-up. Also back for Saints was

influential skipper Lewis Baldwin albeit playing in a deeper role at centre back due to players missing with injuries and other commitments. From the first whistle to the last the 95 hardy souls who turned out to support the 2 teams were treated to a highly entertaining game with both sides taking an attacking approach. As early as the 4th minute Highworth went close as a low cross from the left flashed across Saints keeper Ali Worby’s six-yard box just out of reach of the on-rushing strikers.

Moments later, on the Saints right, Matt Johnson outpaced the home sides left back to deliver a cross that in-form striker Josh Bowden couldn’t quite get to and then in the 6th minute it was Johnson who came closest to scoring for Saints when he cut inside and curled a left footed shot against the crossbar with Highworth’s keeper beaten all ends up.On 24 minutes Highworth Town were presented with a glorious chance when a fortunate bounce dropped behind the Saints defence but the home teams striker’s poke towards goal drifted just the wrong side of the post however, a minute later Parsons showed his finishing quality, striking home from inside the penalty area, to open the scoring, 1 – 0 Highworth Town. The second half proved equally as entertaining as the first with both teams slugging it out like 2 boxers desperate for the knockout blow. For Saints Chris Jordan went close on a

couple of occasions and Josh Bowden proved to be a constant problem for the home defence but Highworth Town showed all their experience to keep the visitors at bay. With Saints throwing caution to the wind in search of the equalizer the home side were always a threat on the counter-attack but keeper Ali Worby and defenders Dan Middleton and Lewis Baldwin kept the visitors in the game superbly. As the game drew to a close Saints midfielder James Hammond became more and more influential driving forward powerfully against tiring opponents but, unfortunately for the Brackley youngsters, the referee called time with Highworth Town claiming the points and extending their lead at the top of the league.Although they will be disappointed by the defeat Saints should take positives from a strong performance against the league’s current leaders.

With it’s wide open spaces and running track around the pitch, this was always going to be one of those difficult days. The early start made for a different fan experience as detailed here.

A minute’s silence observed by the Brackley team prior to kick off.

BRADFORD P.A.AWAY DAYS

Horsfall Stadium was the setting for this 1.30pm kick off due to floodlight failure - the early start making for a unusual fan experience.

Journey: Another long journey three and a half hours, only made better by the comfy coach. 6/10

Stadium: Tired and dogged stadium, could do with a complete overhaul. 3/10

Food and Drink: No complaints here everything you need, pie chips and mushy peas very good. 7/10

Programme: £2.00, nicely put together and a good read. 7/10 Attendance: 341, not very good, considering they are on a good run and they were playing us! 5/10

Result: Lost 0-2, and never looked like scoring, poor performance from the lads on the day. 3/10

The match: Brackley were never in it from the start, we were always a yard short and Bradford wanted it more, not our day and we paid for it. 3/10

WINNING RUN PARKED AT AVENUE

at the match Bradford P.A. 2 Brackley Town 0

Vanarama National League North | 18/11/17 | Attendance: 341

Brackley’s five game winning run ended with a third away defeat of the season against a strong Bradford Park Avenue side who won well with a goal in each half. Saints lined up without Adam Walker for the first time for 16 months while Jimmy Armson returned to the side.

“We never really got going,” Kevin Wilkin said. “It was a disappointing afternoon and we can have no complaints. We have been on a very good run of results but today we have to look at ourselves because we didn’t really put in crosses that threatened or have a single shot on target.”

Park Avenue’s first corner of the game on the half hour created a dangerous situation that was cleared and Ellis Myles scrambled another cross from the left to safety before the home side took the lead in the 41st minute. Nicky Clee won a second corner of the half

and swung the ball in. It was touched on by Gianluca Havern and Adam Boyes shot low past Danny Lewis from six yards to send Avenue into the interval deservedly ahead.

Clee’s effort struck the post and Lewis had to save sharply from Wayne Brooksby before Bradford doubled their lead on 62 minutes. A fine break-away on the left was finished off emphatically by Graham Kelly.

Glenn Walker’s appearance from the bench sparked something of a revival by Brackley but Steven Drench in Bradford’s goal was never troubled and it was the home side always the more likely to get the next goal. Ellis Myles’ well struck shot was the closest Saints came to testing Drench as the game finished in frustrating fashion for Brackley who slipped to third in the table while Park Avenue stayed in 7th place.
