Welcome to St James Park for this final National league North match of 2017 at St James Park as we take on AFC Telford United. We extend a warm welcome to Telford’s officials, players and supporters and we wish you a safe trip home after the game.

Writing this ahead of Tuesday’s FA Trophy replay I hope of course that we progressed and are looking forward to a second round tie against National League Barrow. That would certainly not be a game to draw!

Today it’s back to league action with three vital points at stake. Our games with Telford are

often high scoring and usually interesting with both sides with wins to their name in recent seasons. The battle at the top is fierce and to stay in contention we must retain our strong home form.

Looking back on 2017 it has been a terrific year for the club with such good progress on all fronts. Thank you for your continued support and thank you for coming along this afternoon and getting behind the team!

Happy Christmas!

Best wishes

Welcome to St James Park for this afternoon’s game against Rob Edwards’ AFC Telford side.

This afternoon we pass the halfway mark of the season. Nothing is settled in December of course but good foundations can be laid to build on as we begin the long approach towards the sharp end of the season.

It is often said that it is in January and February that the “big” teams come into their own. By that they mean those with big squads and big resources and looking back over Premier League seasons that has sometimes been the case as the group around the top thins out as the “pretenders” slip away.

It is our job not to slip away. The players have earned the second place at this point and at our best need fear nobody but we know that even a couple of poor results can change everything. The squad has been challenged in recent weeks as injuries have struck. We have been missing some big players but those who have come

in have given everything for the team and let nobody down.

I wrote early in the season that it is a squad game and that a successful season demands a contribution from everyone in the squad. At that point a very settled side meant few opportunities for players who were training well and bringing a great attitude to our work and who deserved their chance but who had to be patient and just determined to make the most of the chance when it came. We are seeing all of this now that the squeeze is on.

With plenty of challenges ahead your support is more important and more appreciated than ever.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas.

Best wishes

Kevin

Hats off for Saints

Brackley Town 3 Stockport County 2

Brackley won a fine match with a strong second half performance having trailed at half-time. Two second half goals by Aaron Williams secured the points to move Saints into second place above Harrogate Town.

“It was a tough, competitive game and the players had to show character to get the win,” Kevin Wilkin said. “In the first half we were a bit impatient at times and a bit too open so we had to address this.”

Having fallen behind to a well worked 16th minute goal by Shane Byrne, the midfielder’s fifth goal of the season, Stockport hit back to take a deserved lead into the break. Jason Oswell won the header from a corner and Chris Smalley squeezed the ball inside the post from close range to level after 21 minutes.

Matt Warburton twice spurned chances when well placed and only a saving tackle by Brackley captain Gareth Dean kept the sides level until Warburton put County ahead just before the break. Afforded too much space the striker found a fine finish from 20 yards.

It was a different story though in the second half. Aaron Williams equalised on the hour, creating a goal out of

nothing, turning to his left to fire in from the edge of the penalty area and it was Williams again who finished at the back post after good work by Dean to put Brackley ahead again after 72 minutes.

The Hatters threw everything forward in search of a third goal and came close after 80 minutes when only a top class save from Danny Lewis thwarted substitute Darren Stephenson. Warburton left the field with an injury leaving The Hatters with ten players having used their three substitutions but Saints still had a few nervy last minutes to hold on which they did to maintain the division’s only unbeaten home record.

The win is Brackley’s first in five attempts in the league at St James Park against The Hatters and the first time County have conceded. “It is a team game and we needed some big contributions today to get the win,” Wilkin added. “Danny Lewis made a good save at a crucial time and has been terrific for us all season. Gaz Dean is the captain and a big leader for us and his block to save a goal came at a critical moment. We are almost halfway through the season and we are enjoying where we are. We have some big games to come but it is great fun to this point.”

this afternoon we welcome

AFC Telford United

AFC Telford United is a football club based in Telford, Shropshire, England. The club were formed after Telford United folded due to financial problems. Currently members of the National League North, the sixth tier of English football, they play home matches at the New Bucks Head in Wellington, part of the new town of Telford. Their colours are white with navy blue and red trim.

Telford United, then playing in the Football Conference, experienced severe financial difficulties towards the end of the 2003–04 season following the collapse of the Miras Contracts business of chairman and sole shareholder Andy Shaw. The club went into administration, and although supporters raised around £50,000 in two months, the club’s debts totalled over £4 million, resulting in liquidation on 27 May 2004.

On the same day, Telford United Supporters Limited announced that a new club would be formed, which was named A.F.C. Telford United; a new club motto, numquam obliviscere (never forget) was

also adopted. In June the new club were placed in Division One of the Northern Premier League by the Football Association. Bernard McNally was appointed as manager and a new squad assembled.

The club’s first season saw them finish third in Division One, qualifying for the promotion play-offs. After beating Eastwood Town 1–0 in the semi-final, they defeated Kendal Town 2–1 in the final to earn promotion to the Premier Division. The attendance of 4,215 for the final was a club record.

The following season saw the club finish tenth. During the season, McNally was replaced as manager by Rob Smith. In 2006–07 the club finished third, having missed the chance to win the league when they lost 2–1 at home to eventual champions Burscough on the final day; the attendance of 5,710 being a new club record.[10] However, they qualified for the promotion play-offs, and a 2–0 win over Marine in the semi-final, they defeated Witton Albion 3–1 to earn promotion to the Conference North.

The 2007–08 season saw Telford finish second in the Conference North, again qualifying for the playoffs, in which they lost 4–0 on aggregate to Barrow. The 2008–09 season resulted in a fourth-place finish and another play-off campaign. After beating Alfreton Town 5–4 on aggregate in the semi finals (a 2–0 win at home and a 4–3 defeat away), they lost 1–0 to Gateshead. The season also saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, where they were drawn at home to Football League club Southend United. Following a 2–2 draw, the club lost 2–0 in the replay. In the FA Trophy they reached the semi-finals, losing 4–2 on aggregate to York City. However, they were victorious in the Conference League Cup, beating Forest Green Rovers 3–0 on penalties after a 0–0 draw.

In 2009–10 the club finished eleventh in the league, resulting in the sacking of Smith and his replacement with Andy Sinton.Sinton’s first season saw them finish as runners-up again. In the play-offs they defeated Nuneaton Town 3–2 on aggregate in the semi-final, before beating Guiseley 3–2 in the final with an injury-time winner by Phil Trainer,] earning promotion to the Conference National. They also reached the first round of the FA Cup again, losing 3–1 at home to Lincoln City.

The 2011–12 season saw them finish twentieth, one place above the relegation zone. Another appearance in the first round of the FA Cup resulted in a 4–0 defeat at Chelmsford City. Sinton left the club mid-way through the following season, and was replaced by Mark Cooper, who remained in charge for only six games, before resigning to take a coaching role at Swindon Town. He was replaced by Graham Hyde, who lasted just two games, resigning after a defeat to Macclesfield Town. John Psaras took over for the remainder of the season, which saw them finish bottom of the division and be relegated to the Conference North. Liam Watson was appointed as manager in May 2013.

In 2013–14 the club won the Conference North, earning an immediate return to the Conference Premier. However, the following season Watson was sacked in December with the club bottom of the division and replaced by Steve Kittrick. They eventually finished 23rd, resulting in relegation back to the North division. However, the season also saw them reach the second round of the FA Cup for the first time; after beating Basingstoke Town 2–1 in a first round replay, they lost 1–0 at Bristol City. In August 2015 Kittrick was sacked and Rob Smith returned for a second spell as manager.

Shot-stopper Singh was hailed as a key signing when he put pen to paper on a deal in May 2017, having left Gloucester City, where he enhanced his already excellent reputation.

With previous National League experience at both Solihull Moors and Kidderminster Harriers, the keeper started his career as an understudy to England goalkeeper Joe Hart at Shrewsbury Town.

Defender Sutton swapped the League of Wales for the National League when he signed for the Bucks in May 2017, ending a 10-year association with Newtown.

The former Shrewsbury Town apprentice captained the Robins in the Europa League in 2015 so brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Bucks’ side. He is sure to catch the eye for the Bucks, with his distinctive appearance and strong leadership qualities.

Who to look out for

Coming through the development squads at Huddersfield Town, Leonard was released by the Terriers in January 2014, having spent time on loan at Garforth Town.

He joined Brighouse Town, and then AFC Em-ley, before his goals meant him being quickly being snapped up by Frickley Athletic. From there he joined Glossop North End, but left to sign with Curzon Ashton in summer 2017. After a bright start with The Nash his opportunities became limited, and he signed for the Bucks in November 2017.

Following three years in the youth system at Wolves, Dudley-born Barnes-Homer had spells in the USA before returning to the UK, where he es-tablished himself as a goalscorer par excellence, most notably with Kidderminster Harriers in 2009. That earned him a move to Luton Town for a reputed £75,000 fee, and he scored 19 goals in his debut season.

Formerly with Brackley he has been a nomadic figure, representing clubs the length and breadth of Britain as well as in Sweden and back in the USA, scoring goals along the way. He signed for the Bucks in June 2017, and has also represented England ‘C’.

The MatchThe biggest ever crowd for an England international fixture saw the end of one marvellous international career, and the birth of another. This was Alan Morton’s final match for Scotland, after 12 years of wing wizardry and 9 successive appearances against England. Starved of possession by his out-of-sorts team-mates, he endured one of his least productive afternoons.

In contrast, Sam Weaver’s debut was marked by a fine performance in the engine-room of a smooth, harmonious England team. Ironically, Scotland were on top in the opening stages of the game, but England wrested control and did not surrender it for the last 75

minutes.

Indeed it was a surprise that it took England until the 36th minute to open the scoring, when Waring broke through a mass of Scots defenders to head the ball past Hamilton. There was a further surprise that it took until the 80th minute before that scoreline was augmented. Hamilton appeared to have Barclay’s shot well covered but it hit Craig’s leg and flew into the opposite corner to the diving goalkeeper. Two minutes before the end, Scotland’s ignominy was complete when Crooks scored from Houghton’s pass.

It was England’s second successive three-goal home victory over the Scots. An oft-overlooked fact is that in response to the “Wembley Wizards” 5-1 drubbing of England in 1928, the home team gained almost full revenge two years later with a 5-2 victory.

The Programme

A familiar programme cover, featuring a four-colour sketch of England and Scotland players, with a thistle and rose motif and the respective flags, was printed on light card. Bovril (“puts beef into you”) took its usual position at the bottom of the page. This cover was used for earlier Scotland v England matches, and a similar design was used as early as the 1924 Cup Final.

Inside the 20 page issue were the fixture details repeated on a page 3 frontispiece, and head and shoulders photos of four FA officials on page 5. Two of their Scots colleagues shared a page with the Programme of Music. Charles Buchan, former England and Arsenal captain and now a sports writer, wrote of “Internationals of the Past”, the only reading material in the first half of the programme. Teams were spread across the centre pages, in 2-3-5 formation, England numbered 1 to 11, Scotland 12 to 22.

Pen pictures of the England team, written by Charles Buchan, were opposite a montage of head and shoulder photos of the players, and the next two pages repeated this treatment for Scotland. Buchan completed his domination of the content was some paragraphs of facts and figures, and was also credited with compiling the list of previous results between the countries.

Advertising was fairly prominent, and included LNER arrangements for the forthcoming FA Cup Final, the Royal Tournament at Olympia, VAT 69 whisky, News of the World, who also had a small advert at the top and bottom of most of the non-advertising pages, Younger’s Scotch Ales, Ekco Radios, Greyhound and Speedway Racing at Wembley and, on the back page, a four colour advert for Mazda Lamps “made in England from British materials.”

Twin Tower MemoriesJohn Litster, The author of the book “A History and Guide to Football Programmes” writes here for “The Red & White” and brings us a series of articles in which famous matches in Wembley’s history are remembered by their programmes, which remain popular with modern collectors.

the non league paperBy Adam Elliis

Try comparing the full-back position to an ingredient used in a Sunday roast dinner and you may agree with my view that it would be the carrot.

Carrots are more significant than the peas, but not the Yorkshire puddings, nor the stuffing or roast chicken.

I myself play as a left-back and I know how undervalued the position is from my shaded pedestal placed far, far away from the table where our strikers and central midfielders drink in our clubhouse after a game.

They may provide the goals and power the team’s engine room, but full-backs; we provide the cloak of invisibility for opposition wingers to turn into a non-event.

We are the garbage disposal men of the team. Full-backs could also wear hi-visibility jackets and we would still go unnoticed.

Think back to the likes of Dennis Irwin and Kenny Samson and they are an example of consistency for the position. But nobody speaks of them in the same tone as when they reminisce about the days of Cantona or Wright, as if they were speaking about an old girlfriend from their teens.

Remember during the 2000s when there was a faint hum over players like Ashley Cole and Marcelo pioneering a new role for full-backs? It was a notion that didn’t survive long because full-backs have long been a source of creativity and endeavour of support for wingers.

Although I was born long after his playing days, Dennis Rofe was a source of inspiration for me growing up with his accurate crossing and troublesome dribbling ability. The only

thing worse for a full-back than facing a tricky winger is their overlapping accomplice, ready to pull your shorts down and make you look like the village idiot.

What I am getting excited about now is the growing endorsement of the 5-3-2 formation by managers across the country over the past 18 months.

A system centred around the wing-back bearing the brunt of the attacking play out wide.

With this new move towards a formation that strengthens defensive tactics in the middle of the park, a clash with teams sticking with the traditional 4-4-2 – a system ideal at exploiting the flanks – will give neutrals and fans alike plenty to enjoy.

You may remember Jamie Carragher saying on Sky Sports a few years ago: “There’s only two things for a full-back. You’re either a failed winger or a failed centre-back. No-one wants to grow up and be a Gary Neville.”

Say what you like, but I definitely wanted to play like Dennis Rofe when I was growing up.

depleted saints fall at home

Brackley Town Saints 1 Wantage Town 3

With Joe Ward, Matt Johnson, James Hammond, Chris Jordan, Alex Stott, and Charlie Kille all unavailable Saints manager Gordon Kille once again had to reshuffle his squad for the visit of high-flying Wantage Town.

Perhaps because of the forced changes, and concerns over the strength of the opposition, Saints seemed to bring a more defensive approach to the game than their normal positive, attacking style and in the early period it was an even game with neither side threatening to

open the scoring.

For the home side a good spell of pressure resulted in a corner in the 23rd minute and as the ball was cleared a Wantage defender appeared to kick out at Saints centre-back Dean March but the referee waved away the shouts for a penalty. Strangely at the next break in play the referee proceeded to caution the visitors defender for his part in the incident that he deemed to be not worthy of the spot-kick.

As the half progressed the visitors took hold of the game and looked the much more likely to open the scoring.

With half-an-hour played a Wantage Town free-kick from the edge of the Saints box sailed harmlessly wide and a few minutes later another attack brought a fantastic save from the home keeper, Alastair Worby, diving low to his right and turning the shot behind for a corner.

In added time at the end of the first half another chance was squandered by the visitors when the shot was hit straight at Worby but just 2 minutes later Wantage Town took the lead they deserved when an unchallenged Jim Glover struck his shot home from the edge of the Saints area.

Wantage started the second half in the same manner that they ended the first, being the dominant side and looking far more likely to score than the home side.

Just 7 minutes into the half the visitors did

extend their lead when Steve Robertson finished calmly from close in giving the Saints keeper no chance.

Wantage came close to a 3rd goal after 68 minutes when Saints defender Dan Middleton deflected a cross towards his own goal but his blushes were spared when Alastair Worby pulled off another superb reaction save.

Skipper Lewis Baldwin worked an opportunity for Saints with a good through ball to Ryan Knight with 8 minutes remaining but the home sides attackers shot was saved, however, moments later they did score when substitute Levi Steele’s well struck shot flew past the visitor’s keeper.

Unfortunately for Saints Wantage drove forward from the restart and Steve Robertson’s excellent control and turn in the box left him clear to thump home their 3rd and the final goal of the match.

not a lot of people know this.....Only four players in Kevin Wilkin’s squad have made more appearances for Brackley Town than 21 year old midfielder Matt Lowe. Not a lot of people would know that.

Joining on loan from League Two Cambridge United in early 2016 many of Matt’s appearances have been from the bench where he has gained his reputation as a genuine impact player. Nevertheless there have been plenty of starts as well, approaching double figures already this season.

“I have to accept at this stage in my career that I might not start every week”, he acknowledges. “I am ambitious and I want a good career in the game but I am very happy to be here. It’s a bit of a roller-coaster really and I guess life in football always will be to some extent. But we have a close-knit group here and that counts for a lot. I feel well supported and looked after. I have a good relationship with the coaching staff and particularly Noony who I have known from a young age from my time at Coventry City academy.”

Having left home at just 16 to play at United, where he spent four years, Matt is glad to be back living at home and to have started a degree course at university in Coventry. “I had to do an access course and then got accepted onto a Sports Science degree course which I am really enjoying. Mark [Noon] is one of the lecturers on the course and it combines all sorts of aspects of sport including coaching. It’s just a 15 minute commute and it’s going really well.

My studies will give me options. Plans and circumstances change so you never quite know what will happen next.”

Turning to his time at St James Park Matt is clear this season is the strongest he has seen the team. “We are definitely stronger than last season. We have more strength in depth and the new additions have given a lift. Losing Adam [Walker] is a loss and hopefully he will be back soon but we have more options now to cope when a player is out that we probably struggled with last year. Aaron Williams makes a big difference of course. He is the focal point and he makes things happen. There is no doubt about the quality of players we have in our squad and I’m very grateful for the time the more experienced players invest in me alongside the coaching staff in order for me to improve.”

More than ready to praise his team-mates, how does Matt see his own game? “I want to play every game of course so when I get my chance I have to try to show what I can do and to prove myself. I want to keep improving. I have scored two goals this season so far against Kingstonian in the cup and Spennymoor but I have quite a few assists also. It’s all about the team. We have a good mood in the dressing room and a few team nights out. You have to enjoy yourself!”

And how will the campaign pan out for the Saints? “There are some good teams in the league and the newly promoted teams have done particularly well. But we are on a par with the top teams. We should have nothing to fear as we’ve shown. Success would be getting into the play-offs, that is certainly achievable and if we don’t do it then I think we will all consider it a failure and really disappointing. I hope we can go further in the Trophy also. Away at Braintree was not easy even though on the day we were the better team when we beat them in the FA Cup at home.”

What Saints’ supporters have seen is the growing influence of Matt Lowe in the Brackley Town set-up. And what they know is that Matt Lowe is an exciting young player with a big future ahead of him.

Just one of two games to survive the weather on a day of heavy snow.

With players, ground staff and supporters all helping clear the pitch this was going to be some afternoon!

A wintery pitch is cleared prior to kick off.

fc united of manchesterAWAY DAYS

A great fan experience at the home of FC United, with the added dimension of heavy snow, this was a good match which ended in frustration.

Journey: Long journey in poor weather, three and a half hours, comfy coach and an excellent driver, made it worthwhile. 7/10

Stadium: As you would expect after spending some £4-5M, every time we go there, there are little add-ons, Good place to go to Football. 8/10

Food and Drink: One of the best, always hot food in the club house and around the ground, the Beef and Pasta was delicious, drinks as usual no complaints. 8/10

Programme: Always well put together, £2, and a nice read. 6/10 Attendance: Thought there would be more, but it was cold, nearly 1900 and a good atmosphere. 7/10

Result: 1-1, thought we deserved the win, we gave away a late penalty, and we had our chances. 7/10

The match: Tough game in cold and snowy conditions, both teams had their chances and we kept Tom Greaves quiet. Good game for spectators of both sides. 8/10

Vanarama National League North | 09/12/17 | Attendance: 1893

One of only two National League North games to survive the wintry weather, the teams served up an open and well contested match but created surprisingly few scoring chances.

Missing the services of Glenn Walker and Jack Byrne in addition to Adam Walker, Kevin Wilkin reverted to three at the back and presented Steve Diggin with a rare start.

Craig Lindfield’s 17th minute free-kick was close and Danny Lewis did well under aerial pressure to push away a cross while Jimmy Armson and Alex Gudger both had shots from distance comfortably saved by United keeper Lloyd Allinson as neither side threatened a goal in the first period.

The second half was played in falling snow but the snow did not settle although the surface became more slippery. Lindfield brought a good save low down from Lewis before Jimmy Armson put the visitors ahead after 58 minutes firing in from 10 yards after a towering header by Alex Gudger from Shane

Byrne’s free-kick.

Roared on by a vocal home crowd the young United side pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Brackley’s defence, marshalled by Gaz Dean, stood firm and it seemed would see out the game for a crucial away victory. That was until the 85th minute when a break on the left by substitute Joel Logan delivered the cross that was adjudged to have been handled and conceding a penalty. Steve Irwin converted the kick placing the ball high beyond Lewis to earn United a deserved point.

“It wasn’t our strongest performance,” Wilkin said. “They are in good form here and had a big home crowd behind them. However it is disappointing not to hold onto a lead and to concede so late. They rarely threatened a goal and we did not create many chances either.”

The draw moves Saints back into second place in the league table as those at the top all sat out a snowy Saturday.

It was a second meeting of these two sides as we travelled to Essex to meet “the Iron” in the first round of the FA Trophy .

Ellis Myles constantly at threat for Brackley at Braintree.

BRAINTREE TOWNAWAY DAYS

Braintree sit second in the National League South so this trip was going to be far from easy.....

Journey: Well, another long journey nearly 3 hours, comfy coach and good driver makes it bearable, We certainly are the league’s travellers. 7/10

Stadium: This stadium is not that bad, plenty of seating, but a little tatty, nice club house though, if you can find the secret Entrance. 6/10

Food and Drink: Ordinary and nothing to write home about, reasonable beers and burgers, but the spirits were expensive, round comparison Brackley £13.50, Braintree £ 20.90, I don’t think so…. 4/10

Programme: 6 pages and nothing in it, hence only £1 very poor considering we are supposed to be equal league status. 2/10 Attendance: Not good, although cold I was expecting more, for what was supposed to be a get back at Brackley Town, 293, and that included 27 Brackley fans 3/10

Result: Fair on the day, not much between the teams few chances, hence 0-0. 6/10

The match: Sorry, game of two halves, first half to Braintree, second half was all ours, MOTM Ellis Myles, ran them ragged for all of the match. Should have had a penalty 4 mins from time, but was not to be. 7/10

AT THE MATCH

Braintree Town 0 Brackley Town 0

When the sides met in the FA Cup in September the game produced five goals but neither side could quite conjure a goal in this FA Trophy tie. Joint top in National South took on second-placed Saints in a game that was short on goal chances but keenly contested.

An even first half saw Phil Roberts spurn The Iron’s best chance firing into the side-netting after 17 minutes when well placed before Brackley twice went close. Ellis Myles cut in and hit a 25 yard effort onto the cross-bar and on the half hour Braintree conceded possession allowing Jimmy Armson to advance and find Aaron Williams whose shot was just wide.

Saints enjoyed the better of the second period with Myles a constant threat. One forging run set up Alex Gudger who shot over under challenge.

On the left Connor Franklin’s cross just evaded Williams bearing down on goal and in added time Saints had a strong penalty claim waved away as substitute Jamie Lucas went over.

“This is a difficult place to come and they are going well in the league,” said Kevin Wilkin. “Overall we looked the more likely to score. The squad is stretched at the moment with some big players missing for us and now a further injury concern with Gaz Dean today but we will look at our options and be ready for Tuesday’s replay.”
