VILLAGE PEOPLETHE

SUMMER 2017 | uccs residence life and housing 1

Dear Resident:

I am writing to congratulate you on two decisions: First, attend the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and the second, to live in what I believe is the finest student housing complex at a Colorado university. In selecting any of our campus villages, you have chosen more than a place to live. You have chosen to join a learning community, one that is not only connected by address, but also by goal. Statistically, across the country, students who live in university housing have higher grade point averages than students who live off campus. I assure you that there is no magic formula in our walls. The difference occurs when students use one connection to build another, whether that is help with a calculus exam or English composition to being respectful of “house rules.” This is what building a community is all about. The university’s primary goal is to assist you in your academic and personal growth. A portion of that means encouraging you to reach out to those who are similar to you, as well as to those who may seem to be vastly different. In coming weeks, you will be invited to a multitude of events designed to help you meet others and to learn about the university. These are the first steps to building the community that will be yours for the next two, three or four years and, potentially, well beyond. I encourage you to attend the events but to do more than show up. Say hello to someone you do not know. Begin building your community by presenting yourself as someone who wants to achieve success and who is willing to share that goal with others. We look forward to sharing what we have accomplished in our 52-year history as a campus community, and we are even more excited to have you be a part of our future history. Welcome to UCCS, to University Housing, and to the first steps of building your successful future.

Sincerely,Venkat ReddyChancellor

The Student Outdoor Learning Experience is a fantastic way to meet people and explore the great state of Colorado and beyond. S.O.L.E. offers a variety of outdoor related trips, clinics, special events, and volunteer opportunities. All this plus 10 free bike rentals per semester for all students makes S.O.L.E. a must-stop resource for everyone on campus. During the school year, all UCCS students are also welcome to use the bike and ski shop for maintenance on their equipment and seek help from our shop techs.

The S.O.L.E. Center also offers outdoor equipment rentals for all UCCS students, faculty, and staff. We offer everything from tents and backpacks to paddleboards and camp stoves at an incredibly low rate!

Have climbing on your mind? The S.O.L.E. Center has a great indoor climbing wall! After completing a brief introductory class on equipment and wall usage, participants can delve into the world of rock climbing. This is an amazing opportunity to learn the sport, develop strength and technique, and most importantly, have fun in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Visit us at the S.O.L.E. Center today!

on bike maintenance and riding safety during the first two weeks of school at the S.O.L.E. Center. Upon completion, students will receive their free bicycle with helmet, lock and accessories (light, pump, multi-tool and flat repair kit). At the end of each semester, students are required to report the mileage from the mile tracker installed on the bike. Students return the bikes at the end of the spring semester.

The program was originally funded by the UCCS Green Action Fund with support from the Student Outdoor Learning Experience (S.O.L.E.) and Students for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability (SEAS). For questions or more information, please contact the S.O.L.E. Center at [email protected], or 719.255.7517.

UCCS encourages and supports active and sustainable transportation on campus. That’s why we provide a free new commuter bicycle to 20 incoming freshman students who live on campus and agree not to bring a car to campus! Bicycling is the best way to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion, increase safety and create a more attractive physical campus. It’s also a great way to stay active and physically fit, and provides mental health benefits such as decreased stress and increased productivity. Best of all, it saves money in car maintenance and gas costs.

To apply, visit uccs.edu/bikeshare to submit an application prior to August 1. A lottery for the 20 lucky recipients will take place and winners will be contacted by August 12. The winners make the final pledge to not bring a car or receive a parking permit for the 2017-2018 school year. All recipients attend an introductory clinic
