Student Staff Spotlight Gilmary George

“Working here at the ProvostLiaison's Office has helped me

professionally and academically. We have fun, we get our our work

done and there is nevera dull moment.”

Even though Gilmary George was born halfway across the world, she never feels too far fromhome while she’s at Stony Brook.

Gilmary was raised in Kerala, South India, and moved to Queens with her family when she was13. Her family moved to the United States to be with her aunt because they wanted to give hermore opportunities and felt that it was the best for her education.

“My parents are my role models,” Gilmary said. “I’m inspired by their belief in me.”

In high school, Gilmary studied Oceanography and graduated Valedictorian of her class, whichshe cites as one of her greatest accomplishments. The scholarship she earned in high schoolallowed her to attend Stony Brook, where she is pursuing a Biology Major on the Pre-Med track.

“The pre-med program at Stony Brook is very challenging and it brings the best out of thestudents,” Gilmary said. “Professors here are very selfless in helping students. One time, one ofmy professors taught a class right after superstorm Sandy destroyed his home. ”

As a Staff Assistant at the Provost Liaison’s Office, Gilmary has been helping professors get theirdesk copies since April of this year. She also enjoys participating in Campus Lifetime Events atthe Bookstore, especially the cooking-oriented ones. Gilmary says the thing she enjoys mostabout working at the Provost’s Liaison’s office are her co-workers, as well as the work experienceshe gains as a team member.

“Working here at the Provost Liaison's Office has helped me professionally and academically,”said Gilmary. “We have fun, we get our our work done and there is never a dull moment.”

When she isn’t studying to become a marine biologist, Gilmary likes to hang out with friends, read, and go biking. She is also very active in the Badminton Club, Pre-Med Society, HallCouncil and still manages to find time to be Vice President of the Newman Club, a Catholicorganization that provides the university with services such as mass, community service, retreats, guidance, and more. 1

Advice for Students to Leap from College to Career

Whether you’re a new freshman on campus, a rising senior getting ready to tackle the

professional world in a few months, or a seasoned professional climbing through the

ranks, Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success is a great book to help youplan your own journey to success.

Adam Grant, author of Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success, is theyoungest tenured professor at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In

his 2013 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, he analyzes our society’s

ideas about success in work and life.

Through his own research, Grant has begun investigating why some individuals go

straight to the top of the success ladder while others have greater difficulty in achieving

financial and academic success. He steps away from the focus on individual drivers of

success including passion, hard work, and luck and takes a new approach of looking at

how we interact with others. In his findings, he has found that most people will act as

takers, matchers, or givers during professional interactions, concluding that personal

style can have a massive impact on an individual’s ability to find success.

Grant earned his Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan in

less than three years after graduating with a B.A. from Harvard University and has been

recognized as a phenomenal teacher after receiving the prestigious Excellence in

Teaching award, from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for all of his

classes. He has presented his advice for career success to everyone from Google and

Microsoft executives to Pixar and the NFL.

Shop Smart with the Gold Star Program

The Gold Star Program guarantees that a textbook will be available through the

University Bookstore for the first two weeks of class. If, for any reason, a textbook

with a gold star sticker is unavailable, the student who needs it just has to fill out

a special order slip to receive a $5 voucher off the price of the textbook when it

arrives.

The program is contingent on faculty members keeping the Provost’s Liaison

informed of the course materials they will be using and class enrollments before

the deadlines. This allows the bookstore enough time to order the correct amount

of textbooks.

Faculty Spotlight on Dr. Denise Buhrau

“I want to help consumers

make better decisions and

better their lives.”

Dr. Denise Buhrau’s love of marketing comes from her fascination with psychology and

how it applies to consumer behavior. Her interest in consumer behavior led her to

become one of the newest professors at Stony Brook’s College of Business.

Professor Buhrau grew up near Berlin and attended Otto-von-Guericke University,

where she studied psychology. During her undergraduate career, she spent a year as an

exchange student at Tulane University in Louisiana, where a research assistant position

in the marketing department helped her to discover her love for psychology as it

applies to business.

“I want to help consumers make better decisions and better their lives,” Buhrau said.

In 2010, Professor Buhrau received her Ph.D. in Management from Tulane University’s

A.B. Freeman School of Business. Her professional focus is on consumer health

behavior which allows her to apply her undergraduate psychology studies to marketing

settings, especially, social marketing.

“I’ve always been curious how the human brain works, and how people function and

make decisions,” Professor Buhrau said of her academic and research focuses.

Professor Buhrau has recently collaborated with the Faculty Student Association and

the Provost’s Liaison’s Office to create a new and innovative set of tools called

Seawolves Multi-Media Academic Research Team Technology (SmmarTT). These tools

are hosted through the Blackboard platform and will be introduced to her classes

during the Fall 2013 semester. The program assists in class division into teams, group

activities and weekly reports, reading assignments, and more.

“It will really help me and my students to streamline team projects,” She explained. “It’s an easy

solution to a big problem.”

During her past semesters of teaching, Professor Buhrau has observed that students sometimes

need help with collaboration, whether it’s working out a scheduled time to meet or with

communication between group members.

The SmmarTT tools help design teams based on their schedules is one of Professor Buhrau’s favorite

projects, and she is hoping that it will be able to help a number of Stony Brook students.

“I am really excited to work with the Provost’s Liaison’s Office,” she said. “This program can be

designed based on your needs.” Professor Buhrau has recommended the program to other

professors on campus because it can be customized for specific coursework and the help is available

right here on campus.

Professor Buhrau loves the interdisciplinary approach that Stony Brook University takes on

academics. She enjoys working with faculty from all over campus. The size of the Business School is

another part of her professional career that she loves. The class size allows her to really know her

students and form a great interpersonal connection with them.

Her main teaching focus at Stony Brook is marketing research, but she has also taught principles of

marketing and research methods to Honor Students in the Business School.

Even with all of the academic achievements under her belt, she is most proud to be a mother as of

July 2012.
