Bonding develops and matures in the midst of care and observation. Touching, feeling, looking, assisting and breastfeeding are just some of the ways it can grow. “In mothers who are breastfeeding, baby’s cries will stimulate the let-down of milk”.
Why bonding is important?
Besides just developing a deep unconditional sense of love and affection between a child and parent, bonding plays significant role in a baby’s mental development. It has been found that monkeys who were given mannequin mothers at birth were less socialised than those who had live mothers to interact with.
Challenges to bonding:
It is common to find parents feeling guilty for not being able to bond with their kids. There could be many reasons behind this. Postpartum depression, childbirth pain, troubles with a previous pregnancy, marital problems, stressed life, depression or mental illness, could hinder the bonding process.
