Adventures along the Hudson

S unday July 15th presented itself as another oppor -tunity to hit the open road with Buicks. It was the first show for the new Upper Hudson Valley Chapter in Cold Spring, NY. It's location could not have been bet-ter. It was on Constitution Island, Federal Land, di-rectly across from and part of the West Point Military

Academy. Our trip started with a meet at the north end of the Whitestone Bridge - in the rain. Tony Gatta brought along a navigator,

his friend Bill (A Mustang fan but that's okay) and he got us right on target without incident about 90 minutes later and with no rain. At 11:00 we were allowed to en-ter the island, single file to a perfect spot overlooking the Hudson River and the Academy. We were set in a large semi-circle and enjoyed seeing about 25 Buicks, some not seen before in our area. Some notables should include a 4 speed manual Wildcat, Nova GSX, and a Grand National El Camino. rolled around and we had to leave our new found friends and head back. Back turned into a real ad-venture. Once on the Taconic it started to rain and did it rain!

As the last car in the group Howie kept us informed by phone as to directions because the rain made it impos-sible to see Tony's lead vehicle. Following Dennis and

Theresa Muehl down reminded me of how well vac-uum wipers do not work. How he could see was a mystery to me when modern cars

are by the side of the road waiting for a break in the downpour. At any rate we all made it back down with-out incident and it made for a great day with our cars and friends. We were glad to support the new chapter in town.

Directors Message… It seems that we are about to close another summer season of car cruises, shows, and just enjoying

the weather in our Buick's. Now it's time to get ready for apple picking, foliage tours and of course

Carlisle and Hershey. We hope you all had a good chance to use your car before it's time to settle in

for it's long winter nap. The Troy Regional was a great show. There was 67 cars and Goldstein Buick

provided many new models to get you ready for a new one. It was a pleasant trip, friendly people and

a chance to chat with other NY Chapters as well as Mass. and Conn. Chapters. You could not ask for

better weather and the Hudson River as a background was the icing on a wonderful time. The Sept.

meeting will be held in the parking lot at Marjorie Post Park as we have been

evicted again (something to do with elections). If the weather is not great we

have a permit for the gazebo. See you at the picnic.

Sands Point Preserve Picnic/Tour Sunday September 23, 2012

Perhaps the most impressive of the North Shore’s early-20th-century estates, Sands Point first served as the home for railroad heir Howard Gould and was later purchased by Daniel and Flor-ence Guggenheim. The 216-acre preserve, located by the Long Island Sound, is dominated by the massive Hempstead House but also includes a second mansion, “Falaise,” that was built by Capt. Harry Guggenheim around 1923. (Guggenheim was the founder with his wife, Alicia Patterson, of Newsday.) In addition to the properties, Sands Point provides access to beautiful walking trails, wooded areas and shoreline. So get your old Buick out of the garage and meet us for a road tour to Sands Point Preserve.

Meeting Point: Macy’s 1100 Northern Blvd, Manhasset NY

Directions: Take the Northern State Pkwy or LIE to Shelter Rock Rd. Head north on Shelter Rock Road for about .6 miles and make a left onto Northern Blvd (25A) . Look for Macy’s on your left hand side. We will be meeting in the parking lot of Macy’s. We will be meeting between 10:15 - 10:45. At 10:45 promptly we leave the parking lot and caravan north to

Sands Point Preserve. Once there we will set up for lunch. After lunch you will have the option to tour the Falaise mansion, walk the preserve or do both.

Fees: There is a $5.00 per car fee to enter the preserve. Optional admission to the Falaise Mansion is $10.00 per person. No children under age ten will be allowed in the Mansion.

Lunch: The club will provide free lunch and beverage to club members that include a hero, assorted salads, desert and beverages. RSVP with how many people in your group so we can have enough food on hand.

RSVP by September 21 Michael Francioni at 631-360-8812 or email at [email protected]

Jackie Gleason who will be the star of the Buick Mo-tor Division's television show starting in October, and his manager Mr. "Bullets Durgen", visits with em-ployees of the General Motors assembly plant in Lin-den, last week and met hundreds of the employees who are currently producing automobiles in record numbers.

Mr. Gleason was very much interested in how Buicks were built and was photographed numerous times as he observed first-hand the cars being assem-bled. The employees answered his many questions as he toured one end of the plant to the other. On several oc-casions, Jackie took over a tool from one of the men

and tried his hand at manufacturing. Miss Barbara Proudfoot, of the Accounting Depart-ment, who had her picture taken with Jackie re-

marked, "he is really quite shy and quiet off the TV stage.

The plant tour was the preceded by a luncheon where Mr. Gleason was informed that the Linden Plant's pre-sent employment figure is 5,336. The payroll for the

plant for the year 1954 amounted to $23,316,718 The Linden Plant's produc-tion for the month of April

was 790 cars, which was a record month in the history

of the Linden plant which dates back to March 1937. Following the Linden visit, Mr. Gleason drove his new Buick convertible to the GM training center at Union, and shown the facilities there that are used by the dealer groups throughout New Jersey for training purposes.

Most old car enthusiasts spend much time repairing and preventing rust on their vehicles. However, rusty tools, nuts, bolts, screws and so forth can also be frustrating. Here are a few tips for handling rust on items on your workbench and around your garage.

Clean up lightly rusted tools using steel wool dipped in penetrating oil or kerosene.

Keep tools from rusting by keeping moisture out of your tool box. Save the desiccant that comes with the packing of electronic gear, for example, and place it

arold Lloyd was one of the most popular and influential film co-medians of the silent film era. He is best known hanging from the hands of a clock high above the street in Safety Last! and for his "Glasses Character", a resourceful, success-seeking go-getter who was per-fectly in tune with 1920s era America. Mildred Hillary Davis was an American actress who appeared in many of Harold Lloyd's classic si-lent comedies and eventually be-came his wife. in the tool box.

A technique from years back also works. Keep tools in a wooden box to which you add camphor or moth balls and dry saw dust.

Make your own desiccant using uncooked rice to ab-sorb moisture. Place in a bag made of cheese cloth or other porous material. Plastic bags will not work. Re-place the rice when it becomes moist.

Coat tools with an oil film. Anything from clean mo-tor oil to olive oil will work. However, some vegeta-ble oils can become rancid with time.

Make your own protective coating by mixing equal parts of petroleum jelly and lanoline. Heat until

melted and mix well. Heat in a microwave, but make sure your use a microwave safe container, not an old can. Apply while still warm using a small paintbrush or old toothbrush so it gets into crevices.

Keep infrequently used tools from rusting by placing them in a plastic bag after coating them with oil. Place a piece of soft chalk in the bag as a desiccant and then seal with masking tape.

While penetrating oil will usually loosen rusted nuts and bolts, so will carbonated soft drinks, Clean up af-terwards to prevent a sticky mess.

Before putting nuts, bolts, screws and other small hardware into jars or cans, coat with oil, petroleum jelly, or hand cream. The greasy residue will also pro-vide lubrication and thus require less wrench muscle.
