The average family of four uses 400 gallons of water a day. The average American throws away 1600 lbs of trash a year, there are 307,006,550 people in this country, go ahead do the math, the answer is unfathomable. To top it all off as of July 26, 2010, 170 million gallons of crude oil have been spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. That number makes the Deep Horizon oil spill only the second largest spill in history. That means there has been worse. All of these huge numbers are affected by all of our daily actions, and this is something most of us don’t even realize we are doing.

This month BNA Magazine would once again like to inspire you to make a difference. Not only for yourself and your family but for everyone in the world today and those yet to come. There are many small changes you can make that will yeild a huge difference, and you can read about them all in this month's issue. We all contribute the impact we are making on this world so we must pull together to try and preserve what we have. God gave this world to everyone, not just to me or you, so we have to take care of it so we can give it to our sons and daughters and they can give it to theirs.

Por promedio cada Americano tira 1600 libras de basura al año, hay 307,006,330 personas en este país, haga la cuenta, el resultado es increíble. Para acabar, hasta el 26 de julio del 2010 170 millones de galones de petróleo se han derramado en el Golfo de México. Ese numero hace el derrame del Deep Horizon el segundo mas grande de la historia. Eso quiere decir que ha habido peor. Todos estos números asombrantes son afectados por cada una de nuestras acciones diarias, y esto es algo que algunos de nosotros no sabemos que lo estamos haciendo.

Este mes BNA Magazine quisiera una vez mas darles inspiración para hacer un cambio. No solamente para ustedes mismos y su familia si no tamben para todos los que vivimos en el mundo hoy y para aquellos por llegar. Hay muchos cambios pequeños que puede hacer que harán una gran diferencia y puede aprender sobre ellos en esta edición. Todos contribuimos al impacto que hacemos en el mundo y debemos unirnos para poder conservar lo que tenemos. Dios nos dio el mundo a todos no solamente a mi o a ti y lo debemos de cuidar para poder dárselo a nuestros hijos e hijas y para que ellos se lo puedan dar a los suyos.

I t ' s s imple. . .what we do (o r don ' t do) has an impact on the wor ld we l i ve in.

We always think and take the attitude that we are such a small part in the grand scheme of things in this world, our country, our state, or even our Community. We have difficulty in accepting that we are here on earth for a reason and that what we do and who we encounter makes a difference.

We used to, and many still do, have the attitude that the trash we make really isn’t that much or that if we recycled it wouldn’t make a huge difference. We are wrong. Try it for one month and you will be amazed by how much post consumer product we were creating. Post consumer products such as aluminum cans, plastic bottles, paper, newspapers, magazines, mai le rs, junk mai l , cardboard materials, plastic containers, and glass. Just about everything we buy comes wrapped up or in a container.

I will guarantee you that if you were to really recycle for one month; you will come to realize that you can indeed make a difference. And when you realize this, if you haven’t done so already, you can encourage other family members, friends, and neighbors that they too can make a difference too.

When we drive, fly, heat or cool our homes, or even charge our cell phones, we emit carbon into the air. Yes, some things emit more carbon than others, but the point is we all contribute unnecessary carbon into the atmosphere every day. At our current rates, we will experience droughts, animal species becoming extinct, and possibly a rising of the oceans.

Carbon offsets are programs that either do things to offset the carbon directly, such as planting trees so that the trees will take in the carbon dioxide and provide oxygen in return, or provide funding for renewable types of energy, like solar, wind, and hydroelectric. Here in Azusa, the Tree Planting Committee has planted close to 1300 trees over the past twelve years throughout the City and our Light & Water Department has invested in several types of renewable energy to provide close to 20% of our total energy demand.

What else can I do to help? You can drive less, use less water, change your light bulbs, turn off things when not in use, recycle, and the list goes on and on. I know you may be thinking, "I've heard all this before, and I'm just one person. It won't even matter if I do any of this stuff."

My only response to you is that's the attitude that's gotten us where we are today; it has to change and it has to change sooner than later. We have to implant in our minds that it starts with me!

Es simple…lo que hacemos (o no hacemos) tiene un impacto en el mundo en que vivimos.

Siempre pensamos y tomamos la actitud que somos una pequeña parte de este mundo, país, estado y hasta nuestra comunidad. Se nos hace difícil aceptar que estamos en este mundo por una razón y que lo que hacemos y descubrimos hace una diferencia.

Antes pensábamos, y muchos aun lo creen, que la basura que tiramos no es mucha y si la reciclamos no haría mucha diferencia. Estamos mal. Trátelo por un

mes y quedara asombrado por la cantidad de desecho que estamos creando. Productos

como latas de aluminio, botellas de plástico, papel, periódico, revistas,

correo, materiales de cartón, contenedores de plástico, y vidrio. Casi todo lo que compramos

viene en un contenedor. Le garantizo que si en

verdad reciclara por un mes; se daría cuenta que si puede hacer un cambio

en el mundo. Cuando se de cuenta de esto, si aun no

lo ha hecho puede animar a los otros miembros de su familia, amigos, vecinos a que

también hagan un cambio. Cuando manejamos, volamos,

usamos el aire acondicionado, o cargamos la batería de nuestro celular,

emitimos carbono al aire. Algunas cosas emiten mas que otras, pero el hecho es

que contribuimos carbono innecesario a la atmósfera todos los días. A este paso, veremos

sequías, animales extintos, y el nivel del océano subirá. Los programas que ayudan a balancear el carbono

directamente como, plantar árboles para que los árboles absorban el dióxido de carbono y de retorno produzcan oxigeno, o recaudan fondos para energías renovables como solar, viento, e hidroeléctrica. Aquí en Azusa, el Comité de Plantar Árboles ha plantado casi 130 árboles sobre los últimos doce años por toda la Ciudad y nuestro Departamento de Luz y Agua ha invertido en varios tipos de energía renovable para cubrir el 20% de nuestra demanda.

¿Que mas puedo hacer? Puedo manejar menos, usar menos agua, cambiar nuestros focos, apagar las luces cuando no se estén usando, recicle, y la lista sigue. Se que tal vez este pensando: “Ya me han dicho todo esto, pero yo solo soy una persona. Ni va a importar si ago estas cosas.”

La única respuesta que tengo es que esa actitud es la que nos a traído hasta donde estamos hoy; tiene que cambiar antes que sea muy tarde. ¡Tenemos que tener en mente que empieza con uno mismo. B

El Sábado 17 de Julio la Iglesia Ministerios Linaje Escogido tuvo un desayuno de damas que marco las vidas de mujeres. Así como a un día la vida de Ester fue marcada al

presentarse delante del rey Asuero. Ester era una huérfana Judía,

usualmente los huérfanos son abandonados y olvidados por la sociedad pero hay un Dios poderoso que nunca se olvida de ellos, y tiene planes maravillosos así como lo tuvo con Ester. Ester hallo favor delante de Hegai, quien se apresuro en proveerle cosméticos y alimentos; y le dio siete doncellas para que le sirvieran. QUE PRIVILEGIO! Cuando uno halla favor delante

de Dios, El nunca te negara nada.Algo que si me llamo mucho la atención fue de cómo Ester no

pidió nada para consejo al palacio del rey. (Ester 2:13) sino que “ella no pidió cosa alguna sino lo que le aconsejo Hegai” Ester 2:15 Ester no rehusó ni si quejo, ni dijo “hay esto no me gusta” sino que ella confió en Hegai, ya que Hegai conoce muy bien al Rey, el sabia que era lo que al Rey le gustaba. Hegai es figura del Espíritu Santo, y el Rey Asuero figura de Dios. Así que el Espíritu Santo sabe que le gusta a nuestro Rey, es por eso que debemos

obedecer. Aun me atrevo a decir que nuestros pastores conocen muy bien al nuestro Dios quien es Rey, y es por eso que debemos de tomar esos consejos de nuestros Pastores ya que ellos saben lo que es mejor para nosotros, aunque muchas veces no nos parece pero ellos, si realmente conocen a Dios tendran toda la razon. Por la desobediencia de Vashti hacia el rey Asuero, Ester surgio reina. No dejes que nadie tome tu corona, deja que Dios ponga una corona real sobre tu cabeza y que te haga reina así como Ester.

Las mujeres en el Banquete de Ester prepararon un Banquete para el Rey de Reyes, le dieron alabanza y honor por que El es el que se lo merece. Salieron saciadas de la presencia de Dios. Fue algo que realmente toco sus vidas y lleno sus corazones. El Espíritu Santo les ministro, hablaron lenguas, Dios les hablo por medio de profecías, pero sobre todo dejaron que Dios les usara y rindieron sus vidas a El!

ESTHER’S BANQUETSaturday July 17 Iglesia Ministerios Linaje Escogido had a

women’s breakfast that made an impact in the lives of the women involved. Just like Esther ’s life was once impacted when she presented herself in f ront of King Ahasuerus.

Esther was a Jewish orphan gir l, usually the orphans are abandoned and forgotten by society but there is a powerful God that never forgets about them and has marvelous plans for them as he did for Esther. Esther found kindness in Hegai, who helped provide her with food; and gave her 7 maidens to serve her. WHAT A PRIVILAGE! When we are in God’s favor, He never denies you anything.

Something that caught my attention was how Esther didn’t ask for anything of the kings palace. (Esther 2:13) but “he asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested.” (Esther 2:15) Esther never refused nor complained and never said “well i don’t like this.” Instead she trusted in Hegai, since Hegai knew the King very well, he knew that it was what the king liked. Hegai is figurative of the Holy Spirit and the king is figurative of God. The Holy Spirit knows what our King wants, that is why we must obey. I would even say that our pastors know God very well and that is why we should take the advice our pastors give us since they know what is best. Even though many times it may not seem that way but they really do know God. By Vashti ’s disobedience towards king Ahasuerus Esther became queen. Do not let anyone take your crown, let God put a royal crown on your head and make you a queen like Esther.

The women of Esther’s Banquet prepared a feast for the King of Kings, they praised Him and honored Him because He is the one who deserves it. They left amazed by the presence of God. It was something that truly touched their lives and filled their hearts. The Holy Spirit ministered to them, they spoke in tongues, God spoke to them through prophecy, but above anything they let God use them and they surrendered their spirit to Him!

The massive crude oil spill from BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion could reach to almost every shore in the world. The impact of millions of gallons of crude oil spilled into the waters of the Gulf has negatively affected the United States ecologically, in fisheries, tourism and the overall U.S. economy. Because of its magnitude and the environmental destruction, it has been named as the “Black Storm” making it the second

largest oil spill in U.S. History surpassing the 11 million-gallon 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off the shores of Alaska.

In simple terms, offshore drilling is the process of extracting oil that lie beneath the ocean floor anywhere from a few hundred feet to 200 miles off a given coast. Although no one can predict the actual impact of the oil spill disaster, researchers are not optimistic. Until today, the situation remains unclear as most of the oil is still below the surface.

Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) detected huge deepwater plumes of dispersed oil up to 30 miles long, seven miles wide and hundreds of feet thick. Scientists view this as a direct threat to marine wildlife, such as fish, sharks, shrimps, corals and other organisms. The surface oil and this new threat “deepwater plumes” will continue to wreck havoc on the marine food chain supply in the Gulf ecosystem.

In addition, marine animals such as whales and dolphins need the surface of the ocean to breathe the fresh air. The toxins from the oil will also have an impact on the breathing air inhaled by these animals. Economically, the shrimp and oyster industry has been almost destroyed by the spill. This area before the spill supplied more shrimp and oysters than any other place in the world.

The question is: should offshore drilling be allowed to continue? Or should it be completely banned? It is clear that our addiction to oil is not going to go away anytime soon. Most of our dependency on energy is supplied by oil with an overwhelming 21 million barrels in consumption per day. In fact, 37% of the US energy comes from offshore drilling. What started back in 1887 from a single wooden wharf off the coast of California has lead to some 4,000 platforms operating in the US today producing 15 million barrels a day.

From the wake of the BP disaster, the US has placed a six months temporary ban on any new deepwater oil and gas exploration projects. The main purpose of this ban is to re-examine the safety standards on offshore drilling. Public opinion is mixed on this subject. In addition, the transition effort to switch to a green way of living is a long-way- off and it is likely to be further delayed because of the political climate in Washington. Until then, it is our individual responsibility to be aware of the impact of our actions in relation to the environment.

El derrame de petróleo masivo causada por la explosión de la plataforma petrolífera Deepwater Horizon de BP puede llegar a casi todas las costas del mundo. El impacto de millones de galones de petróleo derramados en las aguas del golfo ha impactado negativamente a los Estados Unidos, ecológicamente, pesqueros, el turismo a la economía de los EE.UU. en general. Por la magnitud y la destrucción del medio ambiente, lo han nombrado “La Tormenta Negra”, el segundo derrame mas grande en la historia de EE.UU. pasando los 11 millones de galones que se derramaron en 1989 en la costa de Alaska por Exxon Valdez Oil.

En términos simples, las plataformas petrolíferas extraen el petróleo que se encuentra debajo del mar ya sea 200 pies de

la costa o 200 millas. Aunque nadie puede predicar el impacto actual del derrame, no hay mucho optimismo. Hasta el día de hoy, la situación no esta muy clara ya que la mayoría del petróleo sigue bajo la superficie.

Los Científicos ven eso como un peligro directo para el sistema ecológico del océano como, pescados, tiburones, camarones, corales y

otros organismos. El petróleo en la superficie y este nuevo peligro de penachos de petróleo bajo la superficie continuara a destruir el ciclo de vida del sistema ecológico del Golfo.

Animales como ballenas y delfines necesitan la superficie del océano para respirar aire fresco. Las toxinas del petróleo también impactaran su respiración de estos animales. Económicamente, las industrias de camarones y ostiones han sido casi destruidas por el derrame. Esta área proveía más camarones y ostiones que cualquier otra parte del mundo.

La pregunta es: ¿debemos seguir permitiendo estas plataformas en el océano? ¿O se deben prohibir? Esta claro que nuestra adicción al petróleo no va a desaparecer pronto. La mayoría de nuestra energía viene del petróleo. Consumimos

21 millones de barriles al día. De hecho, el 37% de la energía de los EE.UU. viene de esas plataformas en el océano. Lo que comenzó en 1887 con un embarcadero de madera en la costa de california ha evolucionado a más de 4,000 plataformas en los EE.UU. que producen 15 millones de barriles al día.

It was the eye of a storm that had passed. It would touch down in an hour in another form on the opposite end of the campus. I stood staring at its aftermath, stunned. Dozens of college-ruled pages wafted like butterflies being carried by the afternoon breeze. Small composition books slid on the slick cement surface as more assertive breezes randomly pushed their way through mercilessly littered hallways.

Early for a graduation, I witnessed not a natural disaster, but a hidden social phenomenon: the compulsory last-day-of-school emptying out of lockers. The depths of my gut groaned, “So much for Earth Day.” I rounded one corner after another. Each hallway was equally obscene. Trash cans overflowing; piles covering the floor between cans. The recyclable goods at this school alone could fill a store. I wondered, “Do all the schools in the County look like this today? What is the impact nation-wide? How is this possible in this economy?” I pondered what was the ugliest: The trashy, low-class mess? The wasteful indulgence? The environmental impact? The cost to taxpayers and the parents? The ignoring of the poor who could benefit if someone cared just enough, one time a year? I spied a stack of journals perched on one pile, new but for a few scribbles. Underneath were all kinds of clothing and supplies: coats, rulers, organizers, and combination locks—even high heels and new “hip” jeans. All were in clean and in good condition. Worst of all: hundreds of textbooks on all basic subjects.

The one thing I didn’t see was trash. What I wanted to see were news reporters before it was all hauled to landfills instead of the needy. I pictured families in areas nearby who could not afford these things. The books alone might unlock them from the cycle of poverty through education. They could use the clothing.

It was clear what happened. The school’s edict was, “Empty your locker before you leave school today.” The kids’ response was to dump everything and say, “I’m out-a-here.” School administrators have their hands full at the end of school. Trash costs are invisible to the taxpayers. Waste management vendors are just doing what they are paid to do. The landfill has no choice but to receive the “trash.” Parents have no idea their children discard these valuables. And the high school students? They need our help!

This is a socio-environmental issue at its core. There is hope when we recognize the larger impact of seemingly small-scale oversights. “Locker madness” adds up, and can be remedied with effort. A responsible adult community noting the need, taking preparatory steps, and taking appropriate action could profit greatly. Environmentally-active people would gladly show up at the schools if they only knew. Using containers and implementing a plan, students could be guided toward responsibility and gain strong leadership examples. Charities are eager to help the needy acquire such useful resources. Getting conversations going about this invisible condition can be an easy way to make a local impact.

En una visita rutina a una tienda local, para por un momento y me di cuenta de cuanta basura sale de tantas cosas que consumimos. Mirando hacia el techo, veía a las filas de paletas llenas de contenedores de tamaño familiar o cajas de pañales, detergente, y muchas otras cosas. En ese momento, no podía pensar en nada mas que la basura que estas cosas crearan y terminaran en un vertedero controlado. Cuando llegue a mi casa con las cosas que había comprado, me empecé a dar cuenta de los envoltorios y paquetes que se acumulaban despues de guardar mis cosas. El basurero al empesar estaba vacio y ahora estaba a su capacidad con la basura que habia acumulado en un solo viaje al supermercado.

Esa noche estaba escuchando las noticias mientras me preparaba para el dia siguiente. Coincidentemente habia un reporte sobre la importancia de reciclar. El reportaje dijo que por promedio los Americanos tiramos 4.5 lbs de basura al dia. ¡Eso es 1600 lbs. Al año! Despues de mi experiencia de ese dia, me dije a mi misma “eso parece estar correcto.”

Desde ese dia decidi identificar maneras que puedo reducir la cantidad de basura que produzco personalmente. Por ejemplo, en vez de comprar frutas y verduras del supermercado, voy a un tianguis local con mis bolsas reutilizables y compro no solo mas fresco si no tambien mas barato y frutas y verduras locales. Ademas, no estoy trayendo contenedores innecesarios que traeria si fuese un supermercado.

Otra manera de reducir basura es nuestro consumo de comida y otas cosas que son empacadas y manufacturadas en un manera que no perjudica al medio ambiente. Una caja de carton normal se empieza a descomponer en aproximadament 2 a 3 meses, pero hay otros materiales como vidrio, plastico, pañales, cigarrillos, para nombrar algunos, toman un significante numero de años para degradarse. Upon a routine visit to a local warehouse store, I stopped for a moment and realized how much trash comes from the many items we consume. Looking up towards the ceiling, I gazed at the many rows of palettes stacked with bulk-size containers or boxes of diapers, laundry detergent, paper goods, variety snacks, etc. In that moment, I couldn’t help but think about all the trash these items will create and end up in a land fill somewhere. When I got home and unloaded the items I had purchased, I began to take notice of the packaging, wrappers and boxes I gathered after placing my items in their place. The trash container that was near empty that morning was now just about filled to capacity with the new garbage I accumulated from that single shopping trip.

That night I was listening to the evening news as I prepared my items for the next day. Coincidentally, one report was in regards to the importance of recycling. At one point during the segment, the reporter announced that the average American throws away about 4.5 lbs of trash per day. That rounds to about 1600 lbs a year! After my experience earlier in the day, I sadly thought to myself, “that sounds about right.”

Since that day, I have chosen to identify ways I can reduce the amount of trash I personally produce. For instance, instead of buying fruits and vegetables from the warehouse stores or regular supermarkets, I now take my reusable bags with me to the local farmers markets and purchase not only fresher but also cheaper and locally grown fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, I am not bringing home unnecessary containers and wrappers that one would normally acquire from shopping at a store.

A second way to reduce trash is to limit your own consumption of foods and other goods that are manufactured or packaged in an environment-friendly manner. It is estimated that the average cardboard box takes 2-3 months to decompose but there are other items such as glass, Styrofoam, disposable diapers and cigarette butts, just to name a few, all take a significant number of years to degrade.
